Spooky Spotlight: Far From The Tree Cider

It doesn’t get much more “Halloween” than a Hocus Pocus theme quiz held in the heart of Salem, Massachusetts during October.

The Disney classic is a staple at Far From The Tree Cider, which is just blocks from the heart of downtown Salem. They’ve got the Sanderson sisters canned and on draft with their “Pocus Series,” and even on some of their merch.

So, yeah—after their October 3rd Mean Girls quiz attracted more than twenty teams to the taproom, Hocus Pocus was the natural choice for their next theme night. And Quizmaster Samara was more than up to the task.

Samara was a regular at Far From The Tree Cider long before she became their quizmaster, and she was a Geeks Who Drink quizmaster long before Far From The Tree Cider signed up for Geeks Who Drink trivia. Actually—both Samara and Far From The Tree Cider are celebrating their 10-year anniversaries this year! Feels like kismet—or maybe a witch’s prophecy.

As a longtime Hocus Pocus fan, Samara rolled up to the quiz dressed for the occasion—from the tip of her witch’s hat to the toe of her boots. She even had her own Black Flame Candle and Halloween playlist on hand to set the mood at the bar.

We’d tell you it was a close game with teams dueling ’til dawn, but there was a very clear winner who did not come to play. (Well, obviously they did come to play—whatever, you know what we mean.) Team Yabbos flew away with first place with a lead of nearly 20 points, though Team Flat Binx was able to claw their way up to second place and earn two bonus prizes. But in the end, you know how much we like our yabbos. In fact, we love them!

It was a great way to kick off a Geeky Halloween week, where we’ll be hosting a cauldronful of themed events across the country.
