What is Even Happening?!Amber
Howdy, quizzers. What a week it has been. I don’t know how long a state of panic can last, but I try to remind myself that adversity breeds inspiration. Almost forty teams at our quiz! We were packed to the brim – did y’all make some calls or something? You guys wanted more competition? Well, you got it.
I’ll have been a quizmaster for two years this October. That time has flown by. Quiz can be hard, it can be emotionally draining (physically too, if you’re lugging audio equipment around), but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. You might laugh, but I was extremely offended when someone described this job the other day as “you’re just reading words into a microphone.” This job is just not that simple. We choose to do this. I do this for myriad reasons. I love geek culture. I love that we’ve arrived at a time where geek culture is the mainstream. You might not like comic book movies, but remember: we wouldn’t have comic book movies dominating our theaters if the geeks hadn’t inherited the earth.
I also do this because I love the people I work for as much as I love the people I work with. I love making people happy. I love that when I used to be a quizzer, we became so attached to our hosts. I only hope I have the same impact on my quizzers. And I will do this job as long as I possibly can. I hope one day my grandkids come see grandma yelling at sports fans to keep it down so she can read her questions. Hey, maybe they’ll actually listen to me when I’m old and cranky.
I expect all of our thirty-eight teams to be back here next week! Come on, guys, let’s do this thing! Have a great weekend!
