From Amsterdam to Prague: An A-Z of World CapitalsJared
I don't usually cry over celebrity deaths, but my eyes watered up a bit yesterday morning when I got the news about Carrie Fisher. Like most guys my age, she was my first crush. But we move on. This week, I did get to meet my first man crush, when I was Val Kilmer's bodyguard. If you haven't seen Real Genius, Val Kilmer played Chris Knight, who made it cool to be smart. Anyway, he is touring the country showing his movie Cinema Twain, which is a film of his one-man show Citizen Twain. And since I am friends with the theater manager in SF where he was, I got the gig as his bodyguard. Good times.
And now for the last quiz of 2016. It was packed at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company for Geeks Who Drink last night. We had seventeen teams competing, and a whole lot of fun. Round 1 was a round on 2016 that didn't mention any celebrity deaths, which was probably difficult to come up with. Round 2 was songs that many teams had heard before, so that was kind of nice. Round 3 was about being sick and teaching me to do laundry. Round 4 went through the alphabet and Round 5 was about guys named Spike. Round 6 was an interesting one with break-ups and Sicily. Round 7 was action movies and Round 8 separated the people who listen to Taylor Swift and the people like me who have only heard Taylor Swift in Round 2 questions. All in all, a good quiz to end the year.
So yeah, seventeen teams where two of them had to do with Carrie Fisher/George Michael, two of them had to do with Book Hockey, and two of them had to do with Butts. The top 7 teams in no particular order (from 7th to 1st) were MENSA Rejects in 7th, Freedom '90 for Alderaan's Last Christmas in 6th, HMB NorEaster in 5th, The Real Book Hockey and Ancient Mariners tied for 3rd, with the Mariners winning the tiebreaker, Another One Bites the Dust took 2nd, leaving Book Hockey in 1st place!
Congratulations to our winners, condolences to our losers, and we look forward to some great quizzes in 2017! See you next week which just happens to also be next year!
Jared is most definitely a geek who drinks. In addition to hosting a pub quiz, you're likely to find him in a mosh pit at a punk rock or thrash metal show. He collects records and comic books and types about himself in the 3rd person. His greatest trivia accomplishment is he once won a trip to London on a game show that he wasn't a contestant on. His greatest drinking achievement is the 30 Equis Challenge. He's smart, funny, and good looking. So, naturally, he's taken. By his wife of over 15 years. Play his quiz every Tuesday in HMB!
