Another reflection of Chris Cornell

El Pato

Now that all we’re seeing on the blogs are obituaries for the great Chris Cornell, but for those of you new people, this guy was a driving force in music. The only other grunge muscian’s death I can think of that this significance can be attributed to is Kurt Cobain. Personally, I never was much of a Soundgarden fan. I did have an album or two (Blackhole Sun is an amazing track with an unmatched vocal performance by Cornell that I bet was on repeat yesterday). Audioslave didn’t really do it for me either. I never had an urge to see either band live and found Audioslave more trendy than enjoyable.

But the frontman for both of them, Cornell, was talented. I’m more of a metalhead myself, but the evolution of harder rock (which includes metal) would not have traveled so quickly without the popular bands that Cornell was a part of. The melodies of Soundgarden are unique and extremely difficult to forget, largely in part to Cornell’s baritone voice. While I may not have been the diehard fan of Soundgarden I probably should have been, I know how immensely talented Cornell was, both as a musician and a human being. The rock world won’t be the same. RIP.

So some announcements: we will be doing Quiz for a Cause on May 31st. I mentioned this at quiz, but since we know my voice wasn’t exactly at the quiz, I’ll give you the 411:

We’ll be benefiting an organization called REST. They specialize in helping women who are victims of being exploited in the sex trade. Not only do they provide counseling, but they help those in it get out. Sometimes some people find themselves in that line of work because they have no other option, or because someone else has a leash on them. REST helps them get out of there and live healthier lives. You can check out their website for more info here.

So this will be a bit different. At this quiz we’ll be doing things normally, but representatives from REST will be coming around to collect donations to help their cause. There is no obligation to you whether to donate or not, though it’d be awesome if you could. Donate and you can join in the fun for our cash prizes we’ll be paying out at the end of the night. Yes you read that right, we’ve upped the stakes. Quiz no longer is just about getting amazing meals at Lucia (a purse which is an amazing reward in and of itself), we also put some extra greenbacks in there to make sure you bring your A-game.

We’ll talk about it more next week, but until then, put on some Soundgarden and reflect on the awesome career of their frontman.

Also cover the San Francisco 49ers, write books and play a lot of video games.
