Chuck, Porterhouse, Ribeye – I Know Exactly How You Guys Are Feeling….
SuperDave

It always makes for an enjoyable night at the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz when there’s a round that EVERYBODY can get behind. On this given Sunday at Kilkenny’s, that round was Round 6. The movie mash-up awesomeness of R6 got plenty of laughs from our teams and was quite entertaining for all involved. It leads one to think if these movie mash-ups ever actually got made, perhaps the earth might tilt off of its axis. Seriously, Nicolas Cage and Air Bud in the same movie!?! Some much awesome awfulness on the same screen that you can’t even stand it!   In R2, I was saddened to see that our quizzers

Everyone likes a great ending, especially at the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz. This Sunday we had a photo finish right at the end, where we needed to decide our 2nd place team in the most democratic way possible: Rock Paper Scissors. Best-of-3, winner takes the prize! Two men entered….one man left….with a $15 gift card to Kilkenny’s Irish Public House! Rochambeau with actual stakes on the line proved to make for great entertainment on this given Sunday. Congrats to Gum Cuzzelers for claiming 2nd place with a 2-0 RPS victory over Luck of the Irish = No DWI (our two best team names of the night). Oh yeah,

Given that the name of our quiz is Geeks Who Drink, it should be implied that there’ll be certain factions of nerd culture represented in the quiz content on the regular. The consistent representation of franchises like Star Wars, X-Men, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Star Trek, and the like is a shining example of the type of content those who play the pub quiz come to expect on a weekly basis down in the basement at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House.   What we usually don’t see is much content from the world of sports. Most of our quizzers are fine with this, and in fact, several of the regulars openly

I couldn’t help but notice with taking the pictures of this Sunday night’s teams for the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz that the overhead lights in the dimly light bar that is Kilkenny’s Irish Public House imparted a heavenly glow upon my players. Just see for yourself in the pics. I could’ve edited it, but I just liked how it looks. Whether or not it’s a reflection of their inner selves is a moot point here – let’s just enjoy it for what it is (not as art, but my poor photography skills).   Speaking of art, Andy Warhol made an appearance during our quiz, sharing the spotlight in R4

With tonight being Oscars night, I had a slight degree of concern attendance would be down for tonight’s Geeks Who Drink pub quiz down in the basement at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House. But my concerns faded quickly as many of our regular teams made their way down well ahead of the start time for the quiz, hoping to get their favorite tables. You see, it’s becoming less and less of a secret….Geeks Who Drink is the best, nerdy-ist, most raucous quiz night in Traverse City! So much so that I shall continue to sing these praises until we raise the banner as Northern Michigan’s best quiz night, via the MyNorth.com’s

Where the hell did you find this chef impersonator anyway?!
Aaron

I want to know where Geeks Who Drink found a guy to sing show tunes in the voice of the Swedish chef. Is it the original guy from the 1970s-era Muppet Show?! Did they hire a guy? Is there a professional Swedish chef impersonator out there somewhere? I simply must know.   And did you ever notice the Swedish chef had real human hands? That was extremely unnerving for me as a child. Traumatizing, even.   At any rate, Kilkenny’s Irish Pub was poppin’ Sunday night with 11 teams filling the bar to capacity. It’s awesome to see so many people turn out for the quiz.   With so many new teams, there was a logjam in the

These Long Layoffs Between Quizzes Really Seem to Help Overall Attendance Once We Return
SuperDave

I sometimes wonder if people are starting to question my work ethic. After all, this past Sunday’s Geeks Who Drink pub quiz was only the 4th time in the last 8 weeks we’ve actually had the quiz at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House due to various sundry reasons (the holidays, holiday parties at Kilkenny’s, that stupid football game). I’ll chalk it up to circumstances out of my control, but it’s been an awkward start to the new year for running the quiz due to all these interruptions. Well, folks, barring any unforeseen emergencies (weather-related or otherwise), we are back to it.   The return

One More Time – And Perhaps for All-Time – Wu-Tang Ain’t Nuthin’ ta Fuq Wit
SuperDave

I love it whenever we have rounds during the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz that our teams truly embrace and enjoy. This phenomenon was on display for all to see at Kilkenny’s this Sunday once Round 3 rolled around. We had another edition of “Sooner or Later”, only on this night, cartoons and animated TV series were the focus.   As is the norm with the Sooner or Later rounds, teams have the choice of hearing the first three of an increasingly obvious list of clues to name the common thread between said clues and turning in their answer sheets for double points for all correct answers. If not, teams can then

The Quiz Only Built 4 Cuban Linx….
SuperDave

From time to time, the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz can stump even our most nerdy of quizzers. On this Sunday at Kilkenny’s, I frequently heard the refrain “These questions are hard!” on this evening. There’ll be weeks where I hear some quizzers talk about how a particular round was especially challenging or that “it sucked”, but I heard these comments increasingly with each round on Sunday.   Sorry gang, not every week is going to be a gimme. Let’s face it:  If everyone scored 8 in every round, it’d be pretty boring. I’ll tell you it’s certainly pretty boring from my perspective.

Will I remember just how to do this?   This was a question I had in my head – though not too serious of a concern – as I returned from a three-week hiatus from the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz due to the holidays. And who all would show up? I didn’t really know if there would be very many teams after a lengthy layoff, along with what Northern Michigan winters bring to the table this time of year.   Apparently, absence does make the heart grow fonder – or maybe you all were bored on this Sunday, or perhaps looking to continue to drown your sorrows after yet another Lions playoff disappointment. It’s strange to think that this past Sunday will mark the final Geeks Who Drink pub quiz of 2016 at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House, but that’s where we stand on the calendar. As we enter deep into the holiday season, that means this year draws closer to a close. And since Christmas and New Year’s Days both fall on Sundays this year, it means NO QUIZ FOR THREE WEEKS. We’ll see you all again on January 8th.    As far as the quiz went, we found out you all really don’t care for Christmas music at all. I refrained from playing any X-Mas music on my own quiz

The holiday season is upon us, and I feel it’s safe to say that 2016 – generally speaking – will go down in the annals of history as a genuinely shitty year. I won’t go into the specific reasons as to why – though if you know me well enough, surely you can glean all that I mean with that previous statement – but I can’t help but feel all our regular teams and quizzers at the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House have become our own little support group as a small way for us all to deal with the sadness, bullshit and ridiculousness that has plagued this calendar year. And for that, I feel obligated

It always makes for an engaging night when everyone has a chance going into the final 2 rounds of the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz to emerge victorious. That was the scenario after 6 rounds this past Sunday night at Kilkenny’s Irish Public House. All of our teams were within a dozen points of one another heading into R7, and unbeknown to our players, everyone still had their Joker still in their hip pocket, ready to play for the haphazard happenstance that is Random Knowledge in R8.   As far as the quiz content went this Sunday, our teams were challenged by the over-singing/held notes of R2, as only one team reached double digits in

Easter eggs are an odd topic to bring up, considering we just celebrated Thanksgiving in the States (though my Canadian friends will contend that the “real” Thanksgiving was last month, but that’s another debate for another time). But I’m not talking about the edible type of Easter eggs, I’m talking about clues placed oh-so-secretively in places you’d not always expect to find them.   I’ve been known to give my quizzers Easter eggs from time to time during the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz. I do it not so much to give certain teams an advantage. It’s honestly more for my own amusement just to see who’s actually

Limerick power: unlocked
Aaron

I discovered this week that I have a secret superpower: reading limericks. After blasting through all eight limericks in Round Six at Sunday night, the Kilkenny’s quiz players made me read them again. And again.   I think they just wanted to hear me ask, “Did you fuck my wife?” over and over.   But by the third reading, I settled into a rhythm. I even began to enjoy it, and to wonder if my parents lied to me about my German heritage.   And on a night where a group of new players joined us – well done, by the way, Vikings of the North! – these folks must’ve thought dirty limericks

As difficult as this past week was, there is one thing I know I can look forward to that will surely bring a smile to my face. And that would be hosting the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz down in the basement at Kilkenny’s. This week we acted as a sort of make-shift support group, and the lure of $2 Irish Car Bombs helped it part to drown our sorrows. Plus, we had some funny content this week, which of course, leads to funny incorrect answers. Amongst our wrong answers was one coming from our token sports question of the night in R1, where one of our teams thought the Canadian Football League had teams named the Fire,
