Super Bowl Monday Should be A National Holiday
Cap'n Brendan

That’s right, you heard me, I said it. Super Bowl Monday should be a national holiday. Super Bowl Sunday itself is one of the most universally-attended things in America, and just like New Year’s Eve it often involves some behaviors (and ingesting some things) which don’t exactly lend themselves to being up and fully functional the following morning. According to the elevator screens in my office, more than a quarter of people who responded to a recent survey reported they plan to show up late or take the day off already. For those who show up on time Monday morning, how productive will they really be able to be with so many absences – many “unplanned” due

She Didn’t Make It After All
Cap'n Brendan

As you no doubt know by now, we lost Mary Tyler Moore earlier today. My original plan was to honor her by scripting parody lyrics to her titular show’s theme song to mark the event, but in the process I learned something even better: That song is called “Love is All Around.” Which is also the title of the song reworked by ex-heroin addict searching for a comeback at any cost Billy Mack in Love Actually. So, instead, I offer you this: “Christmas is All Around – A Tribute to Mary Tyler Moore.” I felt it in my fingers, I saw it on the ‘net Mary Tyler Moore has left us, her mortal coil is spent She threw her hat in the air Everywhere

Pictures and Data Connections Are Stupid
Cap'n Brendan

If you were here a couple of weeks ago, you may have noticed that I suddenly was walking around the bar taking pictures on my smartphone instead of the digital camera I’ve been using since I started here (and close to 5 years before that). That trusty old relic, like the dinosaur that it was, finally met its end recently and had to be put down like Old Yeller. Not that I’ve ever been much of a photographer, or a big fan of carrying more devices around with me, but there was something very simple and easy about plugging it into my laptop via USB and grabbing all the pictures quickly and easily at the end of the night. Go figure, I'm not embracing the future, I'm just resisting change. Now,

You Suck, Portland
Cap'n Brendan

Seriously, Portland sucks. Speaking as a life-long Seattle resident with all the big-brother complex that comes along with that, I’m comfortable saying this. What with all its traffic and rivers and highway signs that you can’t even see until you’re past the exit; its hipsters in all their bearded, skinny-jeaned glory; the idea that the only good brunch is one you wait in line for 90 minutes to eat; and that general “Keep Portland Weird” attitude that the locals embrace like it’s a dying relative. And don’t even get me started on the weird-ass local liquor laws. Fucking Portlandia. It’s not fair that a city this obnoxious gets to have

Happy 2017!
Cap'n Brendan

Well, we made it. If you’re reading this, it’s because you survived the dumpster fire that was 2016 – congratulations! In what was hopefully a sign of the better things to come in 2017, we were packed to the brim for our first quiz of the new year last night at the Canterbury! 28 teams packed every seat in the house, with a few dedicated latecomers even perched atop the pool table. Last night’s quiz also saw some impressive scores, with four teams at or above 87 points, and the night’s eventual winners Titanic Swim Team hitting 90. That’s only 6 points off a perfect score! Talk about starting the year off on the

Luminous Beings Are We, Not This Crude Matter
Cap'n Brendan

It’s been a little over 36 hours since we lost our dearly beloved Worshipfulness Carrie Fisher, and the full gravity of the tragedy has yet to sink in for me. Having unfortunately been exposed to far more loss and grief than I would have liked this far in my life, I’ve had some practice with coping mechanisms, and I often find that some of the best ways to manage are by tying the loss back to something you remember fondly about the person. I make no claim to feel this death as potently as I would a family member or friend, and yet the loss of a cultural icon can still cut nearly as deep. It’s as if millions of fond memories suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. While

Merry Love Actually Season!
Cap'n Brendan

Love Actually is one of my favorite holiday movies, but not for the reasons you might think. If reading that opening statement made you fume with rage and curse my terrible taste in movies, you’d be wrong. Conversely, if reading it made you well up with feelings and clear your schedule tonight to go home and binge it from a blanket fort, you’d also be wrong. The fact that those are pretty much the only two possible reactions you can get from mentioning Love Actually is why I love it so much, in all its polarizing delight. Even the movie itself is polarizing, with horrible characters, less horrible characters, and the occasional decent human being who gets shat all over

The Electoral College is SO Stupid
Cap'n Brendan

I’m hardly a political science major or anything, but I do know this: The Electoral College is more outdated than pagers, yet somehow one of those things is still in our lives and one isn’t. Elections are supposed to be about the will of the people, but instead we’re somehow stuck with an 18th Century method of electing our Presidents based entirely on the idea that 240 years ago we couldn’t transmit information quickly and reliably over distance. So what did we do? We picked electors to represent our local jurisdictions, told them locally the will of their people, then sent them on a horse and buggy to cast their vote. News flash, we don’t

While We’re on the Topic of Infamy…
Cap'n Brendan

December 7, 1941 gets all the popular credit as a date that will live in infamy, and rightfully so. Pearl Harbor was a sudden and deliberate attack, and one that galvanized the American people in our righteous might to win through to absolute victory. But, what exactly did that absolute victory look like? I can be all but certain that when FDR gave that address it was not in his mind that the America we would preserve for generations to come would be the one we live in. Because, let us never forget, we live in an America that has had more than one infamous date. One we’ve forgotten all too easily. You might think I’m referencing September 11, 2001, or even November 8, 2016.

OMG You Guys, Rogue One is Only 15 Days Away!
Cap'n Brendan

I know we’re early in our relationship, so there are some things about me you might not have picked up on yet – one of those being that I’m a gigantic Star Wars geek. Don’t worry, it’ll come out in spades over the next few weeks with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiering in 15 days. This whole “a Star Wars movie every year” thing is like Christmas Morning, in that it’s every December and I’m excited like a small child about it every time. George Lucas selling to Disney was in. cred. i. ble. Last year when Episode VII came out, I was voraciously consuming every bit of pre-release information I could get. Reading articles and interviews,

Happy Thanksgiving!
Cap'n Brendan

As I sit around my house taking a break from all the cooking prep, watching football, and sleeping in until 11am, I figure it’s probably time to take a break from all that and reflect on what I’m thankful for. After all, that’s what today is supposed to be about – right? Amidst all the wine-fueled family drama, stressfulness, gluttony, and tryptophan-powered couch napping, we look deep inside and contemplate what we’re thankful for. At least, that’s the part we’re supposed to do and always seem to forget about. Not today, my friends! For starters, I’m thankful for all of you. Hosting quiz on Thanksgiving Eve is always a treat, with everyone

I’ll Say Anything for the Right Price!
Cap'n Brendan

Last night marked one of my favorite things about quiz: Getting paid to say things. Not the kind of getting paid to say things that’s in the job description of a Quizmaster where I hang out with you and read questions that have been carefully crafted and fact checked by an army of geeks. Not even the kind of getting paid to say things where I get to banter with you on and off the microphone beyond the script of the quiz. No, last night, I got paid to say things by the wonderful people at Lonely Planet who hired Geeks Who Drink (and, by extension, me) to host a sponsored round promoting the new edition of their Travel

Snarky Shark

November 9th, 2016 - Canterbury Alehouse Tonight we rolled out the big guns:Rainbows, Puppies, and everything just shy of unicorns! We also introduced GeeksWhoDrink's newest trainee: Alex! So, in reality, you all got a 2-for-1 deal in Brendan Substitutes. Luckily, you still had the unflappable Sarahann around keeping score, so it didn't got completely off the rails. But enough about set-up. What about the quiz?! Well, The crowd really shined with the topic of Round 1: Sunshine! But they got a few clouds on the topics of Round 6: Rainbows! Kind

Hi Everyone,

This is Snarky Shark. I'm the current host of the GeeksWhoDrink Pubquiz over at the Lunchbox Laboratory in South Lake Union and The Blarney Stone on Pike.

As for me, I'm pretty much a Seattlite. Sure, I've lived all over the Western United States, but I definitely call this place my home.

Personally, I dig science questions. Why? Well, in real life <le sigh> I'm a graduate student in the Department of Biochemistry in the University of Washington. Though, I can't say I've ever made a Kool-Aid cocktail as is the case with the Lunchbox Lab.

I really enjoy the regular players, with their funny quirks. As well as the hopeful glean in the eyes of the newbies who think they can win. (How quickly those hopes are shattered...)

Need a ringer for Chemistry? Biochemistry? Weird Geological Distributions of Heavy Metals? (Music and otherwise?) I can help with that. However, if you're on the other side of the quiz...I can't help you. But you're going to need it.

See you then.

-Snarky Shark

We Really Couldn’t Have Asked for a More Thrilling World Series
Cap'n Brendan

What’s not to love? Two long-suffering franchises and fan bases squaring off in the kind of cosmic event where one streak HAS to end, if only because no less-comically embarrassing option exists. The matchup alone was great for the combined miserable histories of the two teams involved. Then match up Cleveland, the postseason’s hottest team, against a Chicago club that dominated the regular season in every facet of the game. On one bench a stud reliever acquired from the Yankees at the deadline. On the other bench a stud reliever acquired from the Yankees at the deadline. By now you know the story. Cleveland leapt out to an early 3-1 lead, and entered game 5 looking to

Remember Kony 2012? I ‘Member.
Cap'n Brendan

South Park has been undergoing a bit of a renaissance the last few seasons. Starting to fade into Simpsons-level oblivion in its late teens, funny just occasionally enough to keep you watching but often a total snooze, over the last two years Matt Stone and Trey Parker have embraced a new long-form of storytelling on par with their best work. Much like SNL they seem to always save their most brilliant moments for election years, and this latest season has been no different. Set against the backdrop of yet another election pitting a Giant Douche against a Turd Sandwich, this season sees the citizens of South Park addicted to Member Berries: Berries you eat to remember the good ol’

Seriously, Why is Ramen Such a Big Thing?
Cap'n Brendan

It was about a year ago that I paid off my student loans, a giant mountain of debt which at times I doubted I’d ever escape. Paying them off took diligence, moderation, and a hell of a lot of patience. All along, though, I embraced the responsibility with one thought in mind: I had no one to blame but myself. See, college Brendan had a line of thinking that went something like this: “I only get to do college once, and I have the rest of my life to make money. I don’t want to work so much my grades suffer or miss out on once-in-a-lifetime experiences or eat ramen for every meal, so I’m going to borrow as much as they’ll let me. Fuck you, future Brendan!” Well,
