So, This is What Spring Feels Like?
Cap'n Brendan

I wasn’t sure we’d ever see this again. It’s been such a rainy, crappy, gray, gloomy year! And yet here we are, staring down what feels like the first Memorial Day weekend in FOREVER with a sunny forecast to look forward to! I ditched you all last week to run away to Eastern Washington in search of this kind of weather, and here it turns out all I had to do was be patient and wait another week. Whoops – patience never was much of a virtue of mine. But on the good side of things, it gave Ken a chance to come back and swing a reunion tour! I hope he didn’t treat you too well – I can’t have you getting too complacent without me! Last night’s

So Much Has Changed!
R-Kenny

Ok... not really. Things are very, very similar now to my old days as your regular QM at Canterbury! The beer selection is still great, the cheese curds and BLT are still delicious, our bartenders are fabulous and you can play shuffleboard between rounds! What's not to like?! I did miss y'all. Ever since I left you in Brendan's capable hands, things have been pretty excellent for me. I get to spend all day, every day talking about pub quizzes. That's kind of neat. My grandparents don't understand that it's a real job, but isn't that the best kind of job? One that no one could imagine actually existing? I'll take it and revel in it. Heck. I'm not even wearing pants right now. #workfromhomelife Good

Don’t Look Now, But The Mariners are .500
Cap'n Brendan

Remember about a month ago when The Mariners had started off the season 2-8 and all seemed lost? Well don’t look now, but after yesterday’s drubbing of the Philadelphia Phillies to complete the sweep, the team is now 17-17, and back to .500 for the first time since Opening Day. In the month since hitting that low point, all the Mariners have done is go 15-9 with a roster that’s currently missing its top four starting pitchers, its top setup reliever, and the everyday right fielder who was garnering a little Rookie-of-the-Year buzz before getting injured. We even spent a couple of weeks without top offseason acquisition Jean Segura. And yet here we are, playing good

It’s Almost Cinco De Drinko!
Cap'n Brendan

Ole! We’re just a couple of short days away from Cinco de Mayo, a lovely holiday where we celebrate pretending to know things about Mexican culture while really just using it as the latest excuse to drink a bunch of booze for a reason other than “today ends with y.” We blend up margaritas. We drive Corona’s stock through the roof. We forget we find mariachi music really annoying. And we eat a LOT of tacos. Mmm, tacos. To mark the occasion I’ll be throwing a Cinco party where I’ve invited the guests to bring an entrant for a salsa/guacamole… What do you call it? Bake off, cook off… Mix off? They’re all bringing a dip, and I’m

Men Purchase on Mars, Women Shop on Venus
Cap'n Brendan

I got in trouble today. On my lunch break I went for a walk, a walk which found me in Nordstrom Rack. It’s not an uncommon thing for me to wind up at Westlake Park to check out the food truck options, and while I’m there pop into the Rack to see if I can score any clearance deals. Today I came out with a few good finds – notably a new suit, which I’ve been on the hunt for since I got my bonus in January and decided that would be my treat to myself. Excited about my finds, I texted my girlfriend to tell her: “I’m cheating on you. I just bought a suit and a few other things at the Rack!” The cheating on you part because she hates when I go shopping

So Starbucks Has a Unicorn Frappuccino.
Cap'n Brendan

This is a thing, I guess. Since we’re still pretty new to each other, I don’t think it’s come up before that I used to work at Starbucks for a decade. Nearly five years as a barista, then a little over five years in the corporate office. That was a while ago now (yes, I’m old), and I infrequently visit because why stand in line for 15 minutes to pay $3 for a cup of black coffee, but nevertheless it was a significant enough chunk of my life that I still take notice when the company does something interesting. And this latest Unicorn Frappuccino is definitely interesting. In the name of interesting, your intrepid quizmaster ventured to the Starbucks in his lobby

Salads Are Dumb
Cap'n Brendan

I’m going to write this blog about something you couldn’t possibly care about: What I had for lunch. Something frequently derided as a topic of small talk reserved for only the most desperate of boring conversations. But I’m going to write about it, and you might actually read about it, because I’m challenging myself tonight to turn something that boring into something at least mildly interesting. I’ll probably fail. Maybe I won’t. But you can’t win if you don’t play! And you’re still reading, so you’re basically pot-committed to find out where I’m going! Today I had a salad for lunch. Salads are monumentally stupid.

Ugh, I Really Hate George Springer
Cap'n Brendan

How about that Mariners game last night? I waited until pretty much the last possible minute to talk about it here in this blog, hoping that the sting of that walk-off loss would fade. But no, of course, it didn’t. And now here I sit, watching the Mariners down 2-1 to the Astros as they’ve loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 5th. So it should go without saying that, yep, same shit different game. Springer even led off tonight’s game the same way he finished last night’s, homering to that stupid fucking short porch in Left Field. Last night’s 3-run blast was a dinger in Houston. It would have been a fly out in the other 29 MLB

Watch Out for April Fool’s Pranks!
Cap'n Brendan

This is your PSA: April Fool’s Day is this Saturday. I say this as someone who regularly gets pranked, typically first thing in the morning when I roll out of bed and look at my phone to wake up before I’ve had my coffee. I’ll get an e-mail or text, or see something on Facebook, and forget what day it is. I’m actively thinking about it, actively warning you about it, and yet on Saturday it’ll probably still happen. Someone will get me before my brain cells are properly caffeinated. So don’t let it happen to you. Put up your armor now, and remind yourself to make sure it’s properly fitting on Friday before you go to bed. Put a reminder in your

USA! USA!
Cap'n Brendan

Guess who’s sitting at the bar watching the World Baseball Classic again this week? Did you guess someone else? Well that would technically be true because I’m not the only one this week! But if you guessed me that would also be true. Congratulations, have a point either way! The WBC was designed to promote and celebrate baseball around the world, and when the first tournament was held in 2006 there was widespread concern that a dominant U.S. team would steamroll the competition, defeating that purpose. Instead, baseball did what baseball does, and in the small sample size of tournament play Japan defeated Cuba to win the first title. Now sure, neither Japan nor Cuba is

Happy St. Patrick’s Week!
Cap'n Brendan

The Irishman in me loves St. Patrick’s Day, and the opportunities it presents to drink Jameson, enjoy beer, and most importantly, hit the pub with good friends. But there’s another side of me… Let’s call it the human side… That hasn’t been out to a bar on March 17 in nearly a decade. To quote The Italian Job, “I had a bad experience.” It’s amateur night, a date which couples with New Year’s Eve to bring every idiot out to the bars convinced that they can hang, and it’s everyone else who can’t hold their liquor. Again, I was that guy in my early 20’s. I had that bad experience. It was a

All Hail the World Baseball Classic!
Cap'n Brendan

The World Baseball Classic might be my favorite sports tournament. Big shock, right? The baseball fan loves the baseball tournament. But here’s why: Unlike basketball, or soccer, or any of the other sports that play this sort of event, baseball is largely a team sport. You can’t load a few superstars on your roster and coast behind them to victory. The best baseball player on the planet is Mike Trout, and he’s worth less than a quarter to his team what LeBron James was to his at his peak. It’s simple opportunity: A hitter takes, at most, 1/9 of a team’s At Bats. On defense it’s the pitcher who’s the most important player, and because Starting

Observations on Wally Pipp’s Wikipedia Entry
Cap'n Brendan

Baseball season is upon us, with spring training games starting over the weekend and the World Baseball Classic right around the corner. In honor of that, today’s blog post is about baseball. Or, more specifically, baseball player Wally Pipp. There will probably be several more of these over the course of the summer. It’s nice having a wheelhouse I can dip into when writers’ block otherwise strikes. Earlier today I was working on something completely unrelated, which led me to Pipp’s entry on Wikipedia. You might remember Pipp as the Yankees first baseman who lost his job to Lou Gehrig in 1925 – Gehrig went on to set an MLB record by appearing in 2,130

Why is it So Hard to Make Homemade Pad Thai?
Cap'n Brendan

I really like to cook. Both of my parents did, and it’s a habit/skill I picked up from them at an early age. Over the years I’ve learned how to make almost everything I love, but I’ve become resigned to a couple of specific dishes that I can just never get right. One of those is pizza, and for that I fault the lack of equipment in my kitchen – I’m convinced you need a special oven. But the other is Asian cuisine, specifically pad thai, and SERIOUSLY for that I have no excuse. It’s just impossible to make right! I’ve tried homemade recipes where you go to Uwajimaya and buy $30 worth of sauces and seasonings and other things you wouldn’t

Three Magic Words: “Pitchers and Catchers”
Cap'n Brendan

My God, I love baseball. You’re all new to me, so this is fun: I get to babble on about the stuff I’ve been obsessing over for years at other venues, and it’s not old hat! Quick summary: Baseball is my favorite sport. It’s the heartbeat of my summer. I’m an old school traditionalist in some ways, and America’s pastime is mine too. The passing of Dave Niehaus corresponded with the rapid descent of my interest in listening to anything on the radio. Last summer I traveled to Cooperstown in July, bearing the unbearable heat of humid upstate New York to pay pilgrimage to the Hall of Fame for Ken Griffey Jr.’s induction. I’m a Mariners (20-game plan)

Learn Something New: A Brief History of Lipsum Text
Cap'n Brendan

Today’s blog is brought to you by my getting distracted down a rabbit hole at work, where someone asked me a question and I spent 45 minutes reading up on it to provide an unnecessarily thorough answer. Some might argue I wasted that time; instead, I’m writing about what I learned so that you can be educated. And time spent learning is never wasted time! I can’t remember if I’ve told you about my day job here before, but I basically run the intranet (and a few other communications tools) for a public accounting firm. A lot of my day-to-day bread and butter is helping end users who aren’t very familiar with SharePoint set up new sites, and/or teaching
