Igor Stravinsky's Handel's Messiah
JoeMills

Is it spring?  It feels like spring.  Today was the spring equinox, and I hope you all celebrated with whatever goofy pagan rituals or pseudoscientific prescriptions you may have deemed necessary.  I went to work like any other Monday (except for next Monday, more on that later).  I listened to a thoroughly rational podcast that reinforced all my deeply held beliefs about silly belief systems.  It was suggested that all ideologies, religions, etc. are just stories that we have made up that have amassed many followers.  Religion was the first virtual reality game!  What a metaphor.  You’re completely immersed in this world where there are arbitrary

Have You Even Beaten Super Mario 3, Brah?
JoeMills

Ever been to Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland?  Man is it a fun time.  Small town festivals are so adorable and silly, and Nederland really takes it to the next level.  Rather than celebrating strawberries or some other bland local produce, Nederland celebrates the cryogenically frozen body of a Norwegian grandpa that has resided there since 1989.  Bredo Morstol chills in a Tuff Shed under a boatload of dry ice, awaiting his reanimation in the future.  Nederland decided to have a festival in his honor, complete with coffin races, frozen turkey bowling, and a beard competition (spoiler: I won the beard competition).    On top of that, there’s

How Long Are Those Fingernails?
JoeMills

What’s new in your world, geeks?  Enough about you, let me tell you about my big news.  I have a fish.  She’s a half moon betta and her name is Courtney.  She lives in a cute little bowl with hot pink rocks, some fake plastic plants, and a green plastic army guy.  Things are going well so far.  It’s been a little over a day now, so it may be too early to say.  I slogged away at work all day today while wishing all along that I was home hanging out with Courtney, playing guitar and making crock pot meals.  That’s another big development in my world, I now have crockpot capabilities.  I cook while I’m at work now.

The Tragedy In Sweden
JoeMills

Is the Swedish Chef racist?  It’s really quite a derogatory stereotype of Swedes, and of chefs as well.  Sweden has contributed so much to world culture, and all those that I’ve met have been unlike the Muppet parody.  First of all, there’s ABBA.  ABBA is amazing.  There shiny 70’s disco is everlasting.  Their album, The Visitors, is a masterpiece of progressive dance pop.  I heard a rumor that they are reuniting next year.  Sign me up.   Sweden has an extensive arts education tradition that continues to produce forward-thinking artists like Jens Lekman.  Then there are the likes of Robyn, Lykke Li, and

The 44 That Got Away
JoeMills

Well I hope y’all had a wonderful Presidents’ Day.  I certainly did.  I slept in.  Went to yoga.  Got some pho.  Got some groceries.  Hosted Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz with y’all.  Beautiful weather today as we bask in the twilight of a habitable climate.  Warm days in February are certainly a treat now, though they foreshadow more ominous patterns to come.  We’ll look back on these days fondly.  Just as we now look back at our 44 previous presidents fondly.  We didn’t know how good we had it.   James Buchanan, however, is still a contender for worst POTUS ever.  Though I don’t

Be My Valentine
JoeMills

Here we are on the eve of our society's most contrived holiday.  Valentine's Day has lost all meaning since childhood.  Gone are the days of spending valuable school time building a Valentine mailbox out of a shoebox and taking half an hour to go around the room and stuff Valentine's in everyone else's box even if you didn't like them.  It was second only to Halloween when it came to candy hall during my youth.  I remember sitting down with the list of all my classmates and writing each Valentine.  Even to Bobby Mozcyk.  That kid was such a dick from third to fifth grade.  I'm assuming he continued to be so before and after that time period as well.

Quiz For A Cause Shines Again
JoeMills

You guys have done it again.  You showed up in force tonight and turned out your pockets for charity.  We raised over $235 for THON 2017.  THON is a Dance-a-thon run by the students of Penn State University that has contributed over $137 million since 1973 to the Four Diamonds Fund.  An extra $237 contributed by my geeks tonight.  Well done.   Special kudos to our champs of the night Boy Scout Cookies, who donated their winnings of $45 back to the charity in a very classy move.  Historians is on notice, these boys are good and they told me they like this place and might stick around.  Should make for some good competition

Bring On February Already
JoeMills

My back is just killing me you guys.  Not exactly sure what I did to it but it feels like my body is going to snap in two every time I bend down.  Must be a disc, whatever that is.  Luckily the fine folks at Artisan's Apothecary hooked me up with the fine premium kratom leaf.  Mmmmmmmmm.  Now I'm feeling alright.  Like popping a percoset.   Standing for the past two hours at the quiz was rough.  I'm gonna go home and put my legs up the wall, in legs up the wall pose, because that's great at decompressing the spine.  I wish I could hang by my feet like Michael Keaton did in the original Batman movie.  I thought that was so cool

A Green Chili Kind of Night
JoeMills

Greetings Geeks.  I hope you all had a lovely week and didn't get slightly sick like I did.  Nothing major.  Just some extra mucus and a teensy bit of a sore throat.  A little bit of blood coughed up at yoga.  Not enough to put you out of work (or keep you from your quiz) but enough to ruin a Tinder date.  You know, that kind of sick. Green chili to the rescue! Nothing like a green pork stew concoction, with extra jalapeno Tabasco sauce to sooth one's irritated face holes.  I'm going to be taking some home with me as well.    This past weekend was also our regional QM holiday pizza/karaoke party.  Special thanks to our Regional

I Have A Dream
JoeMills

I hope everyone had a wonderful Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Day today.  I certainly did.  This first federal holiday of the year is a good reminder of how far we've come and how far we have to go in this country when it comes to race.  And this will probably be the last MLK day ever, so it was extra special.   I celebrated with Indian food.  Nothing like a good saag paneer from Little India to celebrate MLK.  Little India is the closest Indian restaurant to my house, so I can't knock it too much, but there are far better Indian joints in town.  India Oven down on Colorado boulevard has a superior lunch buffet, that includes a few dessert

At Least Alabamans Got the President They Wanted.
JoeMills

What a finish to the 2017 NCAA National Championship Game.  Very reminiscent of last year's NCAA Mens Basketball Championship, which was also on a Monday, and also featured a thrilling conclusion.  The Clemson Tigers were dominated all night long by the Alabama defense.  Only to come roaring back in the second half behind the leadership of Heisman Winner (I think? I stopped following college football years ago) DeShaun Watson.  Down by a field goal, but with the ball inside the five yard line, the Tigers went for the win and not the field goal to tie.  Because that's what winners do.  Congratulations to all those fine student athletes.   Remember

Who's Short For A Quizmaster?
JoeMills

Welcome to 2017, folks.  I'm happy to be here and hope you are too.  So much to get done this year, so thanks for kicking off 2017 with me at Historians on Broadway.  I've got so many resolutions this year, including, but not limited to:   -Kill a mountain lion with my bare hands -Gain 60 pounds of pure lean muscle -Earn $250k -Punch someone (maybe at the quiz!) -Eat nothing but foie gras   Those are just to start off January right.  What are some of your goals for 2017 and how can I help you crush them?   We had another impressive turnout tonight at Historians after our holiday

Happy Kwanzaa
JoeMills

Did y'all have a nice Christmas?  Or Chanukkah?  Or Kwanzaa?  I sure did.  On Sunday I stuffed myself to misery with the special Christmas buffet at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver.  There was pate and capicola and dill havarti and prime rib and turkey and ham and chestnut mac and cheese and an entire dessert buffet with Christmas cookies, gingerbread cake pops, spiced pear cheesecake, and warm peppermint chocolate brownie.  It was absolutely gluttonous.    While I didn't get the bike I wanted, I did get some nice bath salts and some Reese's peanut butter cups with Reese's Pieces inside.  Now I'm never going to eat again.

And There Was No Room At the Bar
JoeMills

I trust that we have all thawed out from our very chilly weekend here in Denver.  I trust that we have all completed our Christmas shopping for the year as well.  Or is everyone waiting till the last minute?  I got the bulk of my shipping done online this year (thanks Amazon), though I did pick up a few fill-in items over the past few days from the lovely shops along South Broadway.  If you’re still in need of a gift for your favorite local Quizmaster, here are a few ideas:   -New Bike.  My frame broke and I’ve been at the mercy of Lyft and Uber drivers ever since.  I need a 64cm road bike frame. -Garfield fishtank with

Don't Go Jinxing Kirk Douglas
JoeMills

The last of the Hollywood legends has made it to 100 years old.  Unless you count Zsa Zsa Gabor, but I don't think that's appropriate.  She the modern-day equivalent of Megan Fox.  Ultimately unimportant in the history of film.  Quite the achievement, though, a full century.  It's amazing to think just how much we missed out on from those who didn't make it so long.  That's 43 years longer than Prince lived!  That's insane.  Here's to 100 more years.   Ten teams competed for our geeky prizes tonight at Historians.  I must first mention Santa's Yuge Sack for being the babeliest team of the night.  Swoon.

Stop The Flutes
JoeMills

It was just as I suspected.  After I downloaded the quiz the other day I played through the audio clips, fulfilling my QM duties.  At bedroom volumes the Shitty Flute covers were intolerable, and I dreaded playing them through the big speakers at Historians.  It was truly awful, though my quizzers took it like the champs that some of them are.  Scores were high, but our poor eardrums may never recover.    We had nine teams quizzing on Broadway tonight.  Thanks for braving the cold.  It's going to get colder.  I first must give a special shout out to the Silver Snakes, who performed poorly overall, but made me laugh
