Tale of the Tape
The Duke of Allston

Would Allen Funt have created "Candid Camera" in 2015?  Would the show be a novelty at all?  Is the idea of a gotcha moment in which the viewer is endeared to the subject dead?  It seems today that whenever we record somebody, whether with audio or video or both, we always see or hear them doing something embarrassing.  We're laughing at the subject, not with the subject.     I recall Jim Rome speaking recently on this topic.  Apparently, there's a phenomenon of dads recording their kids and telling them falsely that a favorite athlete of theirs has been traded from their favorite team.  The kid inevitably starts bawling before

The Quizzarding World of Allston
Worst Corey Ever

Well, folks, that’s all from me this week. Three nights, three quizzes. Two of them were done covering for the legendary Will LaTulippe. He should be happy to know how many quizzers asked what the hell had happened to him and were boggled by the fact that he could do something so selfish as to leave them with a sub on quiz night just so he could take a little vacation. Well, Will, I hope you had a wonderful time. 26 teams at White Horse tonight which is way over my standard team count, but something you’re quite used to. A total of 1,552 points were scored collectively by all of the teams this evening, 91 of which were contributed by Ant-Women.

WARNING: The following is top secret. It will most certainly stay that way, as nobody is ever going to read it.

I know everything there is to know about me. Nobody knows more about me than I do, and most likely nobody ever will. If I were a pub quiz, you would fail.

I am a recovering midwesterner on my ninth step (seeking apologies from everyone who was responsible for my being in the midwest as long as i was). I'll soon be moving on to the tenth step, where I take inventory of how my own actions made such a thing possible.

I am a (mostly) proud BU Terrier (I say mostly because though our hockey team is good, I'd never say I'm proud of them) with a degree in business (the highest of the classical sciences). Though Quizmaster is what I would consider my "day job" I'm also a CPA in my free time. I know what you're thinking, and NO... I DON'T do taxes. Not all CPAs do taxes. I am one of those who does not.

I do not like eating animal. Nothing against the animals. And nothing for the animals. I just don't do it. Don't ask. Or do. I don't give a shit (see Nick Swardson, All Day, for proper accenting of that last sentence).

I am a fan of penguins, owls, sheep, and dragons. This is because I can draw them at a 3rd grade level. All of my other drawing skills are closer to the Pre-K level.

I am a gamer at heart. Talk to me about Final Fantasy or Zelda. Don't talk to me about Halo, COD, or any other FPS disasters. I'm a classic JRPG lover and will defend the genre to the end of the earth. May the various gods help you when you try to argue it with me. "But I can't see people's heads blow up when I kill them!" "You're an idiot. I win."

I am about 5' 10". I am VERY Caucasian (read pale... not my fault). I am a musician. I am well read in Sci-Fi. I am scrawny. I am mostly happy. I am the warrior. I am not your father's oldsmobile.

But mostly, I am. (I think.)

One of the great privileges of working for Geeks Who Drink is the exposure to pop culture phenomena that I might have otherwise missed.  In a world of hundreds of channels, and in a world where I kinda do my own thing most of the time, I generally stick with HBO series that I overpay to watch.  Also, it's July, and I'm not spending much time in front of a TV anyway.   We had a Breaking Bad quiz a couple of years ago just before the finale, and I started watching the show, in preparation for hosting the quiz.  I even got into Marvel movies when I hosted our first Marvel quiz last year.  Fellow quizmaster Lacina introduced me

Strange Fruit
The Duke of Allston

You guys ever heard of the durian?  I read about it once.  It's this fruit that grows in Southeast Asia that tastes great (or is at least edible), yet has an awful smell.  Apparently, you're not even allowed to bring it on buses.   I remember Marge Simpson dubbing fruit "nature's candy."  But not everybody has a sweet tooth.  My mom's boyfriend Dave (that'll never sound right to me, but he's a great guy) wouldn't eat the blueberries served in the first prix fixe course at my brother's recent wedding.  My good buddy Kevin gave me a "no" to several common fruits that I listed

Tonight represented a syzygy in the World Famous universe, as our weekly quiz aligned with Canada Day.  Canada Day got off to a good start for the Canadians, as the Blue Jays spanked the Red Flops (my dad called them that when I was a kid).  I usually associate smoked meat and poutine with traditional Canadian dishes, yet, Rick Porcello served up meatballs today.  Good thing our neighbors to the north play the local nine only seven more times this year.  The twelve games between the two already played this year feel like 120 games.   We continued the party up in here tonight.  Our manager Canadian Paul invites Boston's

Now I know y'all be loving this blog right here.  I've softened on Limp Bizkit.  It's a part of my high school nostalgia as much as Britney and Christina and American Pie movies and not getting laid.  Back then, I railed against them, and against SUV ownership.   Now that I've reached "establishment age" (as my hippie-era mom calls turning 30), I sold out and got myself a Rav4.  Hey, it was a good lease takeover deal.  I Ubered with it for the last seven months of the lease, and it was still 17,000 miles under the allowance at the end of the term, so I bought it.  It's a comfortable ride, and I chose to honor four wheel drive vehicles with

Our crack writing staff has been writing more Sooner or Later rounds recently, so I decided to join in the fun by making a Sooner or Later music round for tonight's quiz.  Nope, we didn't play it in two parts (although maybe now I could make something based upon that.)  This was simply eight songs with titles pertaining to the idea of "sooner or later."  I don't love Stephen A. Smith, but I do like his appearances in the Oberto beef jerky commercials.  "You're ruining my sex down here!," he exclaims as his copy of "The Essential Babyface" is drenched in water.   I got Shakira in there as well.  Who's the advertising genius who got her to draw

In the Game of Quiz, You Either Win or You Die
Missus H

June 13, 2015 was one of the greatest days of all time. It was the 3rd annual, Game of Thrones quiz, which this year was at the most glorious White Horse Tavern in Allston. A whopping 45 teams showed up to compete for $395 in cash money doll hairs, which is pretty freaking sweet. There weren’t any costumes (aside from your glorious QuizMistresses, which of course, duh we’re awesome), but honorable mention to the guy sporting the “Winter is coming” ugly sweater in 80+ degree weather. That truly is dedication.   I must say, I was surprised to see so many 0 point rounds, I mean I know they were hard, but even so, you’re supposed to

Once upon a time there was a girl, whose only goal in life was to leave the great state of Texas. She dreamt and hoped and prayed and wished that she could escape and move to some big fancy city in the north. But dreaming and hoping and praying and wishing don't make things happen. Thank goodness the little girl was smart enough to figure that much out. So the little girl decided that the best course of action was to turn into a super nerd who was awesome at everything and somehow she finagled an escape plan to Boston, which is where she remains to this very day. And she doesn't dream or hope or pray or wish for things to just happen, she simply kicks ass and takes names, but is really, really nice about it and gets shit done. The end.

Yep, I made that the headline because Round 6 this evening touched upon retro porn.  I remember visiting a Quebec strip club in 2002 and seeing 80's porn on small televisions.  Nobody kicks it old school like the French.  Heck, the oldest surviving porno film is called "Le Coucher de la Mariee."  If that's not an on the nez title, I don't know what is.  And I still had an easier time pronouncing that than "clitoris."   Lest you think we live entirely in the gutter here at Geeks Who Drink, the round also asked about ladies named Debbie. Strange Brew
The Duke of Allston

It's not just one of the best things Eric Clapton ever made, or even one of the best things the SCTV gang ever made. It was also what we talked about in tonight's 50/50 Round 3, in which players had to separate the bonafide from the bogusamong descriptions of eight craft beers. Only two teams didn't score four or five points, and the team who posted the high score of six finished dead last among 14 entries. Weird game. I'm not even certain which beer among the dozens I've tried (scores?) would be the weirdest. I've had everything in mybeer from vanilla to apricot, and yet, none of what I've endeavored to sample even remotely approaches The End of History.   This

How I Spent My Winter Vacation

I took my March vacation two months late this year, and for good reason, as my brother Tim got married this past Friday to the lovely Ilhem in L'Home Chamondot, France.  A tip of my cap one more time to Corey Heady for filling in for me last week.  I owe the world a recap of the trip, and as promised, tonight's blog will cover just that.   Day 1:  I touched down at 9:30 AM Paris time last Wednesday morning.  Six hours ahead of Boston time, I would typically be in bed at 3:30 at this point.  I was told that a shuttle would be there to pick me up upon arrival, but it wasn't there.  It wouldn't

Summer in Boston is right around the corner, and you can feel it in the air. Slightly humid, you start to sweat the second you walk out the door. You get sunburned without realizing it’s happening. I'm fascinated by time-lapse travel videos on YouTube.  There's no greater timesuck than sitting and watching four or five of them in a row.  By the time you're done, you've watched 30 minutes of somebody's drive down a highway, set to throbbing dance beats and Pop-Up Video style factoids about the roads and the roadside attractions.   Recently, I stumbled across this trip through the Chunnel, and I'm still not clear as to why the transport vehicles exist at all.  Why were those built?  Why didn't they just build standard travel lanes and let people drive their own vehicles through

I grew up in Burlington, VT, and moved here on a whim in 2003.  Became the quiz presenter at White Horse Tavern in 2005, where I worked for 7 years for another quiz company. Then Geeks Who Drink came a-callin'.  I first rejected their overtures, but joined the family when they offered to pay me in hair gel.

When I'm not hosting your quiz or hitting on you, I enjoy horse racing, kayaking, and baseball.  I once won $33,000 on a $48 horse ticket.  I also participated in the 2012 and 2014 Horse Player World Series, and in the 2014 National Handicapping Championship, both elite handicapping tournaments held annually in Las Vegas.

I was on "Judge Mathis" in 2004, and also appeared locally on the Red Sox trivia game show "The Batters' Box" in 2009.  Yet, I still get recognized for appearing for ten seconds on a casting special for "Beauty and the Geek" in 2005.  Seriously, it's aired on television maybe twice, and people recognize it.  It's stupendous.
