Inspector Gadget
The Duke of Allston

The crap that people spend their money on these days: Smartphones that keep us tethered to screens even when we're off the clock. Drones that are going to fall out of the sky and hit somebody in the head sooner rather than later. Apple'seven trying to make wristwatches happen again, which seems to me to be as likely as making fetch happen. (John Oliver voice) It took me a good year to tan my wrist where I used to wear a watch, dammit, I'm not going back, Apple! You can't make me! Stop it! Bad company! We took a Price is Right-style look at some of this absurdity in our 50/50 Round 3 this evening. A motorcycle helmetwith a built-in map display? That really lends

I grew up in Burlington, VT, and moved here on a whim in 2003.  Became the quiz presenter at White Horse Tavern in 2005, where I worked for 7 years for another quiz company. Then Geeks Who Drink came a-callin'.  I first rejected their overtures, but joined the family when they offered to pay me in hair gel.

When I'm not hosting your quiz or hitting on you, I enjoy horse racing, kayaking, and baseball.  I once won $33,000 on a $48 horse ticket.  I also participated in the 2012 and 2014 Horse Player World Series, and in the 2014 National Handicapping Championship, both elite handicapping tournaments held annually in Las Vegas.

I was on "Judge Mathis" in 2004, and also appeared locally on the Red Sox trivia game show "The Batters' Box" in 2009.  Yet, I still get recognized for appearing for ten seconds on a casting special for "Beauty and the Geek" in 2005.  Seriously, it's aired on television maybe twice, and people recognize it.  It's stupendous.

How I Spent My Winter Vacation
The Duke of Allston

I took my March vacation two months late this year, and for good reason, as my brother Tim got married this past Friday to the lovely Ilhem in L'Home Chamondot, France.  A tip of my cap one more time to Corey Heady for filling in for me last week.  I owe the world a recap of the trip, and as promised, tonight's blog will cover just that.   Day 1:  I touched down at 9:30 AM Paris time last Wednesday morning.  Six hours ahead of Boston time, I would typically be in bed at 3:30 at this point.  I was told that a shuttle would be there to pick me up upon arrival, but it wasn't there.  It wouldn't

The LaTulippes are Lovely in Spring
Worst Corey Ever

Summer in Boston is right around the corner, and you can feel it in the air. Slightly humid, you start to sweat the second you walk out the door. You get sunburned without realizing it’s happening. You really dread the thoughts of winter again, and so you trick yourself into thinking you enjoy it. Ahh… Boston summer. Maybe I’ll head down to the Common and throw a Frisbee around while trying to not jack anyone up who’s sunbathing in the middle of the city.   We had a phenomenal competition tonight, with strong finishes of 11, 11, 14, and 12 points in round 8 from our top 4 scoring teams; the

WARNING: The following is top secret. It will most certainly stay that way, as nobody is ever going to read it.

I know everything there is to know about me. Nobody knows more about me than I do, and most likely nobody ever will. If I were a pub quiz, you would fail.

I am a recovering midwesterner on my ninth step (seeking apologies from everyone who was responsible for my being in the midwest as long as i was). I'll soon be moving on to the tenth step, where I take inventory of how my own actions made such a thing possible.

I am a (mostly) proud BU Terrier (I say mostly because though our hockey team is good, I'd never say I'm proud of them) with a degree in business (the highest of the classical sciences). Though Quizmaster is what I would consider my "day job" I'm also a CPA in my free time. I know what you're thinking, and NO... I DON'T do taxes. Not all CPAs do taxes. I am one of those who does not.

I do not like eating animal. Nothing against the animals. And nothing for the animals. I just don't do it. Don't ask. Or do. I don't give a shit (see Nick Swardson, All Day, for proper accenting of that last sentence).

I am a fan of penguins, owls, sheep, and dragons. This is because I can draw them at a 3rd grade level. All of my other drawing skills are closer to the Pre-K level.

I am a gamer at heart. Talk to me about Final Fantasy or Zelda. Don't talk to me about Halo, COD, or any other FPS disasters. I'm a classic JRPG lover and will defend the genre to the end of the earth. May the various gods help you when you try to argue it with me. "But I can't see people's heads blow up when I kill them!" "You're an idiot. I win."

I am about 5' 10". I am VERY Caucasian (read pale... not my fault). I am a musician. I am well read in Sci-Fi. I am scrawny. I am mostly happy. I am the warrior. I am not your father's oldsmobile.

But mostly, I am. (I think.)

Chunnel Vision
The Duke of Allston

I'm fascinated by time-lapse travel videos on YouTube.  There's no greater timesuck than sitting and watching four or five of them in a row.  By the time you're done, you've watched 30 minutes of somebody's drive down a highway, set to throbbing dance beats and Pop-Up Video style factoids about the roads and the roadside attractions.   Recently, I stumbled across this trip through the Chunnel, and I'm still not clear as to why the transport vehicles exist at all.  Why were those built?  Why didn't they just build standard travel lanes and let people drive their own vehicles through

Cut a Hole in the Box
The Duke of Allston

Round 3 tonight was a 50/50 proposition on mail-order boxes.  First thing I thought of was Columbia House and the 12 CD's I got for a penny back in 1998, so let's recall what I got in that shipment: -Will Smith "Big Willie Style":  That was my nickname in high school, as you might imagine.  Before I got the album, I got the cassette single for "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It."  I think I honest to God played it three times the day I bought it. -Mystikal "Unpredictable":  I was a white kid in Vermont who had a fetish for anything rap.  Even my dad asked me "any white artists?" when he went through the box.  Mystikal

Freakin' A, Man
The Duke of Allston

"Wait, Jack Nicholson is a Yankee fan and a Lakers fan?  Can we just paint a mustache on him and call him Hitler?" - Some random commenter to Bill Simmons That bothered me too when I was a kid.  I love the Sox, and I appreciate the films of Jack Nicholson, so I didn't like that he liked the Yankees.  At least he seems to sincerely appreciate them, unlike that idiot Jay Z, who thought that Curt Schilling was David Wells. Yeah, go hang out with that other obnoxious fraud Jimmy Fallon. Jack celebrated his 78th birthday today, so we dedicated our speed Round 3 to him, with players naming his eight films which grossed nine figures.  "Something's

Sunday Silence
The Duke of Allston

He won the Kentucky Derby back in 1989.  I haven't been working Sundays for quite that long, but with the exception of a stretch during my senior year of high school, I've had a scheduled work shift on the seventh day since 1999.  I've always wondered what regular folks do with a full Sunday off.  I picture folks lingering at al fresco brunches and couples lying in bed watching television from 7 PM until they fall asleep. Six weeks from today would mark the 10th anniversary of the first time I cracked the mic at the White Horse Tavern.  We'll have to wait until the first Wednesday in June (which is the actual date anyway) to commemorate it, because tonight

19 for Me
The Duke of Allston

I was amazed (but not surprised) by the sight I saw when I ventured into the Allston Staples to print tonight's visual Round 5.  There was a lady at the color copier, and she was copying tax forms!  Assuming that she received all of her necessary documents by the mandated February 1st deadline, she had two and a half months to complete her return. Sure, people are busy.  But this was the worst winter in Boston's recorded history!  I had my returns completed by the middle of March, and I had four sources of income in 2014.  I wasn't about to spend a nice April day compiling business expenses, so I got it done when I was snowed in.  Of course, I owed money
