Ashes to Ashes
The Duke of Allston

I know you forgot about his life already, Internet, but remember when David Bowie died last month?  The title of his entry was one of his songs.  We had a couple of patrons this evening who were partaking in Ash Wednesday.  And I literally mean a couple.  On the bright side, I managed to resist my urge to lick my thumb and reach for their foreheads.   It would appear that many Allstonians gave up quiz for Lent.  I'm not a religious man, but I don't hate this time of year. Sure, the weather sucks, but you can get cheap fish sandwiches at McDonald's, and baseball games start happening.  I got a day job this year, but I still have two days a

It's All About the Hamiltons
The Duke of Allston

So sang the Lonely Island gang in "The Chronic - what? - cles of Narnia."  If you asked somebody before 2015 about Alexander Hamilton's cultural relevance, they might recall his portrait on the 10 dollar bill.  They might even recall a notable spot from the '90s "Got Milk?" campaign in which a would-be radio contest winner's correct answer of Aaron Burr isn't understood by the host, as the caller has a mouth full of peanut butter.   Anything that we know about the former Secretary of the Treasury going forward we will have learned from the smash musical "Hamilton."  I haven't the inclination to spend hundreds of dollars to see a play, so I'll wait until

It's Bill Pullman, You Fool
The Duke of Allston

Remember when Homer became intelligent, and was resented by others in Springfield for it?  "Point out your plotholes elsewhere."  There's a really cute girl who played tonight who picked up on a Simpsons reference that I made.  My heart is aflutter.  Also, that was a really quotable episode.  "Point out your plotholes elsewhere."  "I'm a Spaulding Gray in a Rick Dees world."  "Extended warranty?  How can I lose?"  "The fire marshal would be appalled."  "Don't tell me how to feel."   Somehow, a "Bill Paxton or Bill Pullman?" Round 3 had eluded our crack staff this whole time, so we made good tonight, describing

A-Choir-ed Taste
The Duke of Allston

Our music Round 2 tonight featured eight songs with choirs.  I sang in a chorus in sixth grade.  I was selected to perform a solo of "Heartbreak Hotel" at our concert on May 9, 1996, and I brought the house down.  Why do I remember the date?  Because it's the same day that McDonald's introduced the Arch Deluxe.  I liked those.  They had the Atlanta Olympics that summer, and I won a bunch of free food from Mickey D's.  But I didn't do as well as Homer Simpson did in winning free Krusty Burgers during the '84 Summer games. Krusty's my favorite Simpsons character by far.  "You people make me sick!  I am personally going to spit in every

Great Balls of Fire

It turns out that somebody in Riverside County, California hit Powerball tonight.  Yeah, blah, blah, blah, that's a lot of meth.  Actually, that joke doesn't apply, as it turns out that it was sold in an affluent community.  I have a friend who lives in Riverside.  His name is Jed.  I've known him since high school and he's one of my favorite people.  I saw him at Christmas.  He was visiting with his wife Ashley and his infant son Declan.  Sunrise, sunset.  I hit the 27 and nothing else.  Good thing I like my job, both the hosting part, and the writing part.   I

Toys in the Attic
The Duke of Allston

Who remembers Teddy Ruxpin?  For those of you under 25, he was a talking teddy bear who "read" books to kids.  You bought the bear, and then, in a stroke of genius that made Gillette a household name, you had to buy cassettes for Teddy as well.  I wanted one when I was a kid, but was Heismaned by Mom, whose excuse was "parents should read books to their kids."  Well, then frickin' do it.  She did.     Add that to the list of things I've wanted for Christmas but haven't gotten.  More contemporary examples are a Horse Player World Series entry (in her defense, those are $1,500), and a wheelbarrow full of porn (no excuses.)  Our visual

You've Got Mail
The Duke of Allston

I have no idea why people criticize the United States Postal Service.  They employ hundreds of thousands of people, they have all kinds of trucks and planes and other overhead costs...and it still only costs 49 cents to mail most letters.  They independently run a solvent business, backed by federal laws that protect both their carriers and the security of the mail.   It's a perfect system, the right mix of government intervention and private enterprise.  And, yet, that's not private enough for our lawmakers, who, for some bass ackwards reason, see fit to saddle the USPS with an obligation that requires them to fund pensions 75 years in advance.  That's

Fun facts about the Barenaked Ladies!   -They're Canadian.   -One of their big early fans credited with helping them become popular in the States was Jason Priestley from 90210.  For any White Horse Tavern servers reading this, that was a TV show that people watched in the '90s.   -Their 1998 hit "One Week" spent precisely one week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  That's even better than "7" by Prince peaking at number seven.   -They did the theme to "The Big Bang Theory," but I'm sure you already knew that.   -My mom always liked "If I Had $1,000,000."  And wouldn't

Go West
The Duke of Allston

Recently, I lost my friend and former co-worker Dave Tomm.  He was honored with a memorial service in Manchester, CT a month ago.  At the service, I met Ross, a current employee of my former company, a veteran of Boston radio.  He told me a story about Billy West, the subject of tonight's Round 7, which I wrote.   You, the reader, likely know Billy best as the voice of several popular animated characters, eight of whom were heard in Round 7.  Before he was a cartoon star, he worked behind the scenes on the Howard Stern show.  And before that, he cut his teeth cutting promos at WBCN, a legendary Boston

Soul Glo
The Duke of Allston

As a frequent writer of Rounds 2, I always endeavor to conceive a variety of concepts.  There are only so many rounds one can write based on song titles, so I do what I can to make rounds based on song lyrics.  Song lyrics, however, aren't as rich as they used to be.  "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "One Week" were big pop hits in their time, but today, hit songs seem to follow the KISS rule:  Keep it Simple, Stupid.     They've become increasingly difficult to mine for ideas that would form a specific round.  I wrote tonight's music round, entitled "No, Seriously, Can I Get a Witness?"  Initially, I thought that finding eight songs that

Is being the mayor of Boston a boring job? It doesn't seem like one. You get to govern a nice city with smart people in it. I have to wonder why Marty Walsh has time to devote to some of the nonsense I hear him talk about publicly. Today, he proposed that the tobacco-buying age be raised to 21. Never mind the obvious proof that prohibition doesn't work, neither on an age basis for alcohol, nor entirely for marijuana in most states, and for cocaine in all states.   It's at worst insulting and at best a question of why we're paying a mayor if his work duties consist of banning tobacco. We know what tobacco does. It says it right there on the packaging. It's no secret that

Rome if You Want To

I forgot all about it (or never heard of it in the first place), but according to tonight's Round 6, HBO scrapped a TV series about Rome because it cost nine million dollars an episode to produce.  What the hell did they do, rebuild the Colosseum?  I pay $208 a month for TV (including HBO), internet, and phone, and they balked at a nine million dollar price tag?  Where did all the money go?  This feels like the equivalent of OTB failing in New York:  How do you not make money running a gambling business?  How do you not make money from a TV network where everybody pays through the nose to watch it?   John Oliver is British.  Can't

What Do You Call a Canadian Squash?
The Duke of Allston

Gourd!  HAHAHAHAH!  Sorry, Marianne, you don't have a monopoly on bad jokes.  Oh, come on, even the Barenaked Ladies named an album "Gordon."  You have to be a Canadaphile like me (or even maybe like Marianne) to get it, I guess.   Our visual Round 5 this evening featured eight gourds, and players had the match the name to the image.  We had zucchini in there.  My dad used to stink up the house making zucchini relish when I was a kid.  I told this same story to a chick in a bar once just to keep the conversation flowing, and she told me to "shut up."  Opposites attract, except for alcohol affinity and talkativeness.

I was on "Judge Mathis" in 2004, and also appeared locally on the Red Sox trivia game show "The Batters' Box" in 2009.  Yet, I still get recognized for appearing for ten seconds on a casting special for "Beauty and the Geek" in 2005.  Seriously, it's aired on television maybe twice, and people recognize it.  It's stupendous.
