Where Have All the Cox Orange Pippins Gone?
Extra Terresticle

I’m not much of an expert on this topic, but I’ve read a few articles on the internet, so that makes me legit, right? At one point in time, there were thousands of apple varieties growing in the United States, but for a variety of reasons, a very high percentage of them have gone, or are going extinct. You’re probably familiar with Red Delicious, Granny Smith, and McIntosh apples, but the Baldwin or the Newtown Pippin are ones you aren’t likely to ever see again. So before we’re down to just a handful of apple varieties, we included them in a question at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, which most of you were able to get.

An Expert in Art I am Not
Extra Terresticle

A few times during the year, I participate in an online quiz competition where I get six questions a day and I compete head-to-head against someone else who has those same six questions. The questions are all categorized and our stats are tracked over time. Well in the category of art questions, my percent correct is abysmal, hovering around .050. Which is ironic because my mother is an illustrator and I grew up going to art museums and learning about art. And yet when it comes to questions about specific works, I’m clueless. So at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, I threw an art round your way and to be honest with you, you’d all have beat

Have you Been Working on your New Years Resolutions?
Extra Terresticle

I decided to keep my New Years resolution simple and straightforward this year. I’m going to memorize the capital city of every country on this planet. I got a head start with all of the European countries, and considering none of you were at my quiz last week, I reused my European capital city contest during the quiz. I was very impressed as you all covered almost 80% of all European countries. For a second, I thought that you might name every European capital and leave me with having to devise a tiebreaker on the spot, but it never got to that. So we had our first Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong in 2017, and to tie the quiz together, we named every round (except

My Last Quiz of 2016
Extra Terresticle

I’ve closed out my last quiz of 2016. I acknowledge that this has been a tough year for many people. From the multitude of celebrity deaths to the changing political landscape, there’s been a lot to be down about. But we have a new year coming up and we need to take it head on with optimism and hope. There’s going to be a celebrity death in early 2017. And then another. And another. But we’re not going to say, “Fuck you, 2017.” We’re going to get better at appreciating every day we have, with friends, with loved ones, with strangers. As 2015 came to a close (or was it 2014?), I summed up the year by saying that I’ve always loved

My Last Quiz Before I Get My Braces Removed
Extra Terresticle

Thanks for coming out to the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong last night. You were all treated to my last quiz with braces. Knock on wood, after almost seven long years they will finally be removed later this week. As I’ve reflected on my time with braces, I’ve realized that at least 95% of the people I interact with on a weekly basis have never seen me without braces. This is really exciting stuff. I’ve been thinking about all the foods I plan on eating after I get them removed. So far I’ve got an apple, beef jerky, an everything bagel (those poppy seeds like to get stuck in the brackets), crispy corn, and Stacy’s Pita Chips. Anything else

It’s What’s Inside That Counts
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a question about the chemical elements that make up at least 1% of your body mass. Now the average human body contains at least 60 chemical elements, but only a very few of them make up more than 1%. The biggest one is oxygen, which makes up almost 2/3 of our bodies. Of course our cells need oxygen to do their thing, so we want to keep this one high. Next up are carbon at 18% and hydrogen at 10%. Then nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. Every element after that takes up less than 1% of our bodies. Of course there are important ones, like potassium, magnesium, and zinc, but our bodies also carry elements like

Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a Raise the Bar round on bar exam stuff. Ugh, the bar exam, it’s giving me shudders and I didn’t even take it. But I did have a front row seat at the bar exam studying show last summer as my girlfriend spent months agonizing over laws, torts, cases, decisions, legalize, etc. It was tough to watch, but she did pass it, and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in a nice ceremony a few weeks ago at Faneuil Hall. I quizzed her on the Raise the Bar round and to no surprise she would have gotten eight points. (She only got seven questions right, but on RtB rounds, you only need to get the final question

Where No Quiz Has Gone Before
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we revisited early episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series. First, a note about the show. It aired on NBC starting in 1966 and lasted for three seasons. It had a pilot episode completed in 1965, but the episode was never aired. NBC didn’t like it very much, but thought enough of it to commission a second pilot. The first pilot, titled “The Cage,” had Captain Christopher Pike helming the USS Enterprise. It was in the second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” where Captain James T. Kirk was in charge of the ship. But this pilot too was not initially aired. The first ever episode of

Extra Terresticle

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, so naturally at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a round on the event. The round was titled Back and to the Left, a reference that seemed to confuse many of the Geeks, so I had to explain that Back and to the Left was the phrase repeated several times in the Oliver Stone film JFK. You see, the Warren Commission, the government’s investigation into the assassination of President Kennedy, concluded that it was a single shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, who shot the president from the Texas School Book Depository. At the time of the assassination, the president’s

So I’m friends with many of my Hong Kong regulars. Some I’ve known since before my QM days, while others I’ve only just met in recent weeks. Among those I’ve known for a while and have spent time with outside of quiz, there are many experiences that we can look back upon and reminisce about. But there are also some shared experiences that we really don’t look upon too fondly at. The final question of round four at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz elicited memories of a night that would fall into the latter category. It started with a winter weekend getaway to my friend’s ski house in New Hampshire. There were about 35 people in the

Election results poured in while intrepid quizzers matched wits at the Hong Kong Restaurant in Harvard Square last night. Questions on famous Hillarys and Donalds, food reality shows, and countries that don’t exist anymore presented challenges for the assembled crowd, but unlike Michigan or New Hampshire, this one was decided pretty early in the night. How many of you are familiar with Cambridge’s rich candy-making history? In the mid-1800s, NECCO began making their wafers in Cambridge; and over the next 100 years, they were joined by more than 60 other candy makers. Up and down Main St., candy factories churned out their confectionaries until a handful of national companies, like Hershey and Nestle, established a market dominance. Those big companies either bought out the smaller ones and relocated the manufacturing to more centrally located factories, or drove the other companies out of business entirely. One factory is still in use, however, where more than 15 million Junior Mints are produced every day. And there are

They could not wait to get me to say their name out loud. It was quite funny actually. It didn’t phase me in the least. Keep ‘em coming kids! Who But John Sununu
Extra Terresticle

We had a question at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong that name dropped John Sununu, and I realized that even though he was a well-known New Hampshire politician, many of my Geeks might not be familiar with him. So let me give you a quick rundown of his life so you will always think about the Granite State when you hear Sununu. Sununu was born in Havana and has three degrees from MIT. He spent most of the 80s as the governor of New Hampshire before becoming George H. W. Bush’s Chief of Staff. While Chief of Staff, he recommended David Souter to President Bush as a nominee to the Supreme Court. Souter was nominated and while he started out conservative-leaning,

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a round on fictional nannies, butlers, and maids, and where we learned that Ask.com still does 200 million searches each month. (It was in the round because it used to be Ask Jeeves.) Think about it. A few weeks ago we learned that there were 500 million Yahoo accounts. That’s one in every 14 people on earth (I know, I know, many of those users had more than one account). Following that logic, if everyone who performed a search on Ask.com did one search per month, that’s still one out of every 35 people on this planet using that site. That’s crazy. I didn’t even think that site still
