More Balanced than a Cirque do Soleil Show
Extra Terresticle

Before we started last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, I observed that the audience was very well balanced as every team had an equal number of males and females. Now maybe this has happened before, and maybe it hasn’t, but it was certainly the first time I noticed it. (While we didn't finish with an even number, it was still worth noting.) And then once the quiz got underway, the scores were very even. The standard deviation for the round 1 scores was a scant 0.5. The largest standard deviation for scores in any one round was in round five where the scores were 4, 7, 7, and 8 for a standard deviation of 1.73. After three rounds, one team had 21

A Message From Your Level 9 Paladin Class Quizmaster
Extra Terresticle

The other weekend my running group had a D&D themed costume event, so it was with much excitement that I got to read off a round where every answer included a role-playing character class. And in that round we learned about the paladin—part fighter, part cleric. Now I’ve never actually played any role-playing games, but I feel like the paladin would be a good fit for me. There’s just something about the Lawful Good that I would be on board with. I could also be on board with the renaming of the tater tot to the potato pom-pom. That’s what the cool kids in Australia are calling them. What I’m not on board with is wasting good beer on your pet moose,

Another Geography Lesson?
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we snuck in a question about four U.S. highways and the states they pass through. The question asked for the states that the four roads covered the most miles in. If you’re familiar with the Interstate Highway System’s numbering system, you’d have known that I-5 is in California and that I-25 is somewhere between the mountain states and the Midwest. Meanwhile I-90 is the northernmost highway while I-80 is somewhere below that. That’s because the numerical naming convention was established for U.S. Routes where they were smallest in the east and north, and largest in the west and south, with

A Holiday I Won’t be Celebrating Around You
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a question about 2016 holidays, and it included the month of this year’s take your kid to work day. I knew the answer because I had already seen the email from my full-time job announcing the holiday, but I want to let all of my Geeks know that if I have a kid, I will not be celebrating that holiday by taking him or her to my quiz. So keep on using your lewd team names. I won’t censor them. Unless they’re really offensive. Or about ramrods, pull out couches, or your grandmother’s lack of wrestling skills. It was a tight battle at last night’s quiz, The C U Next Tuesdays

Closer Than a David Price Start Against the Indians
Extra Terresticle

Red Sox season started yesterday! Nothing else matters because baseball is back and Boston won. Mookie Betts and David Ortiz both hit homeruns, and are now on pace for 162 round trippers this year. David Price meanwhile continued his dominance of the Cleveland Indians, picking up 10 strikeouts on the afternoon. Perfect season, World Series, here we come! Okay, I’m blowing that up quite a bit. It’s certainly great that the Sox won, but it was just a game. One of 162 to play out over the next six months. There’ll be plenty of moments for elation and heartbreak, but it was pretty sweet to win the first one. And while the Sox took this one by four runs,

The Geek Interpreter's Response
The Fish Chick

A blog in which I respond to a blog of one of the most under appreciated stories of our beloved BBC Sherlock series. Seriously, Moffat, this should’ve seen far more screen time. Alas, for clarity John Watson’s words are within quotes whereas mine are not.   “Three young men came to Baker St claiming that events in recent issues of a comic had started happening in real life. I know. We'd turned away mysterious deaths and worldwide conspiracies, but this was the one that Sherlock was interested in.” Well duh, John. Even Anderson could see that Sherlock was getting bored with run-of-the-mill murders that he could solve in a day. This was

Song Titles, Foreign Language Textbook Style
Extra Terresticle

Last night at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a very creative audio round where the song titles combined to create a simple conversation. Each odd numbered song title posed a question, while the even numbered song title offered a response. It was very much like one of those dialogues you cover in the first chapter of a foreign language textbook: Beth: “Hello” Charles: “Hello” Beth: “What is your name?” Charles: “My name is Charles.” Beth: “How are you?” Charles: “I am well.” Beth: “Do you want

Wham!, Bam, No Thank You Ma’am
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had an audio round on artists with four letters in their names. There were many artists that made it into the round, like Toto, INXS, Muse, and ABBA, but one artist that didn’t get included was Wham! Which made me laugh to myself when one of my teams decided to guess Wham! for three different answers. Why Wham!? Why not Beck or OK Go or Cake or Rush or KISS? What’s so special about Wham! that you confused them for Snap? I’m going to be spending much of my afternoon trying to process that. I was also surprised by the number of teams that thought Janet was in the Jackson 5. Some teams gave me Jermaine

I Went to Scotland and Dublin and All I Got Were 17 New Untappd Badges
Extra Terresticle

I strongly believe that when you visit a new place, you should completely immerse yourself in the customs and traditions of the region. And of those traditions include copious amounts of beer drinking in the pubs, well, when in Rome, right? After a week in Scotland and Dublin, I counted up all the beers I logged in my Untappd app and the final tally was 36. And those were just the ones I could check in while on a wifi connection. But again, live like the locals, right? Spending all that time in the bars kept me away from the constant flow of American news, so last night’s Recently In Stuff round was very much my quick update of what I missed while I was away. You were all

Maybe we are a nation of drunkards, as Ken Burns succinctly put it in his "Prohibition" documentary series? In round three of our Geeks Who Drink quiz last night at Hong Kong, the room had the chance to second guess themselves. They could put one very confident answer that would net them two points if correct, or guess twice and gain one point if either guess was right for each question. One such question asked which drink is the current recognized official beverage for 20 of the 28 states that have official beverages. No, not beer. Nope, not whiskey either. And sorry, not even bourbon. Milk, people. It was

Rule 34 (As it applies to Super Tuesday)
Extra Terresticle

Do you think there are porn political parodies? I mean, if I can think of it, then it must exist, right? Isn’t that what Rule 34 is all about? We had a round on fan-fic parodies of television shows last night which is really the basis for my question. Speaking of the parodies, I can’t get the thought of Data from Star Trek: TNG whispering the word frottage into Riker’s ear. I also can’t escape the question of does Data prefer bearded Riker or clean-shaven Riker? Another round last night was on songs with parts of their titles in parentheses. I thought I was being a little mean with that one, but you guys actually did pretty well. I’m real bad when

Those Cartoons are Dirty
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong, we had a round on cartoons that reference private parts and man was I an ignorant child. When I was growing up, I wouldn’t have picked up any of those references. But it made me wonder, how have those references made it into kids shows? I know Archer and South Park aren’t kids shows, but Spongebob Squarepants? How on earth did that show have a scene on panty raids that made it past the FCC? Ren and Stimpy and Rocko’s Modern Life were a little bit more for older kids, but still probably inappropriate for their audiences. The first audio round was a challenge; and we even gave you options for the

Yes, Finally, an Alexander Hamilton Round
Extra Terresticle

I finally had the pleasure of running an Alexander Hamilton round at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong. The round was an audio clip of the famous cabinet debate over the Proclamation of Neutrality stating that the United States would not get involved in the war between France and Great Britain. I enjoy the musical, but it does get a few historical details wrong. First, Thomas Jefferson was not advocating for joining France in its war against Great Britain. Rather, he knew that neutrality was necessary, but he did not think that a public proclamation had to be issued. And second, Lafayette was not involved in the conflict at that point in time. He was actually a prisoner

I don’t know about you all, but I’m not leaving my house ever again. Tarantulas in Northern California? Nope. It’s only a matter of time before they’ve canvassed the entire United States. And counting plants? How soon until they start counting their human victims? Until the take over the world? Madness! Theme? What Theme?
Extra Terresticle

There was no theme at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong. No theme at all. I’m telling you, there was nothing tying parts of last night’s quiz together. Just rounds on FNORD, mind control, skull & bones, Bavaria, 666, hidden imagery in money, and other stuff. But for some unifying Illuminati-like theme, well it didn’t exist. I was surprised by the scores on the money round. The round showed eight close ups of US currency, and the Geeks had to name the denomination. And only two teams aced it. One team even guessed a penny, despite the fact that none of the pieces of money were copper in color. The top team on the night

I hope you all enjoyed the Friday Night Tights round at last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong. I thought the Shart Tank one was particularly clever. Reaping Rainbow was pretty good too. I thought I’d continue the theme with some plays on MCU shows. An unorthodox P.I. has a little bit of fun with a fellow gifted character: Jessica Bones. Or how about a blind crime fighter doesn’t realize his clothes were replaced with transparent linens: Baredevil. Then there’s the upcoming series about a superhero who tries to rebuild his life as a wizard: Luke Mage. These are relevant because of a question in round five about Claire Temple, the nurse in
