The Temperature is Rising, and so is the Quiz
Extra Terresticle

Hey New England, you can finally thank me for something. I went down to Virginia this past weekend and came back with some absolutely beautiful weather. One of my friends from college got married so I took a road trip down south for the wedding. We were blessed with some very beautiful weather, and I thought it rude to have it all to myself so I brought some back for you all. Except I may have brought a little too much back, and now I’m sweating my balls off. Still working on this warming up the area in stages thing. While it was getting hot hot hot outside, the Hong Kong was nice and cool, where a competition brewed among 10 teams. Verbatim? I

Spooooooon!
Extra Terresticle

Last night’s question on The Tick got me wondering about the origins of the cerulean superhero. It also had me asking myself the following question: if Ant-man could get his own feature film, then why can’t The Tick? Well it turns out the azure arachnid is not from the Marvel Universe, nor is he a DC Comics character, but rather he’s the creation of a local Boston-area cartoonist for New England Comics. He eventually got his own comic book series, followed by his own TV series, where Puddy from Seinfeld lent his plangent voice to the Lyme Disease-transmitting crime fighter. His superpowers include immense strength, an inability to be killed

All Hail the Undeflatable Tommy B
Extra Terresticle

By now you had to have heard about the deflated ball scandal that is plaguing the New England Patriots. It’s seemingly all anyone interested in sports wants to talk about. Here’s my take on the situation. Remember when the Patriots got busted for videotaping opposing teams’ signal callers? If not, let me remind you. They got busted for spying on other teams’ coaches (which really it’s hard to call it spying when there are 80,000 other people who could be watching the signal callers, but I digress). After which they went on an all-out assault on their opponents for the rest of the season. That included one game against the Washington Redskins

Happy Quizzaversary to Me
Extra Terresticle

Yesterday marked four years as a Geeks Who Drink Quizmaster for yours truly. It’s the longest I’ve ever held any one single position. (I worked at a higher ed institution for almost seven years, but got promoted three times so I never really did the same job for more than a few years.) Additionally, this past weekend marked a major milestone for me as I ran and finished my first marathon. It basically entailed doing the same thing—running—for more than four hours straight. So that’s a four-year span of doing the same job and a four-hour span of doing the same activity. Now if I can just keep my attention on one thing for four minutes, this week

REI Clearance Sale: Portable Typhoid Toilets
Extra Terresticle

At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz, we learned that REI sells something called the Cleanwaste Portable Toilet for a wallet-lightening $79.95. Why would you pay $80 to shit in the woods?! I don’t understand. Especially since we also learned that Typhoid fever is a poop-borne disease. People, you could be spreading Typhoid! Don’t waste your money. And if you require the “comforts” of a plastic stool, well maybe you shouldn’t be camping in the first place. For the hockey team logo question, many of you thought the Montreal Canadiens’ logo was stolen from a Canadian cycling club, despite the fact that I said in the question the team had made

All the Marathon Finishers are Pretty
Extra Terresticle

Congrats to all the finishers of the 109th Boston Marathon on Monday. You are all pretty, and awesome, and pretty awesome. 30,000 people ran the 26.2-mile race while many more than that spent the day off cheering on the runners and drinking from morning to night. In a week and a half, I will be running my first marathon and I hope that all of you call me pretty for the duration of my quiz. Fortunately many of you weren’t too hungover from day drinking yesterday. Two teams duked it out to a first place tie at last night’s quiz, and per the quiz rules for a first place tie, we went to a five-question tiebreaker. After the tiebreaker, both teams were still tied (a

The SpaceX Rocket Now Batting 0 for 2
Extra Terresticle

Does everybody know what SpaceX is trying to do with one of its rockets? No? Well I’ll try to explain it as best as I can. The rockets used to launch stuff into the sky, like an NSA spy satellite or a three-month supply of peanut butter M&Ms for the space station crew, are really really expensive. And what’s worse is they can only be used once. After the rocket comes back to earth, it is finished, and the space company has to build a new one. SpaceX is trying to devise a way to recover those rockets so they can be reused, and is doing so by trying to land the spent rocket on a floating platform in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Imagine filling up a bathtub with water, floating

HomeLandslide Victory
Extra Terresticle

I’ve had high scores at my quizzes before. A few 83s here, an 84 there, an 86 once, but never have any of my teams broke the 90-point barrier on a standard two-16-point-round quiz before. Until last night. Call it luck, call it coincidence, call it a night of aligning stars, call it whatever you want, it happened and I’m going to toast to them. This was a performance like Nomar Garciaparra’s on May 10, 1999 when the shortstop had three home runs, including a pair of grand slams. Or like Tom Brady on October 21, 2007 when he completed 21 of 25 passes to go with six touchdowns. This team was en fuego, nothing was getting past them. With a final tally of 91 points, the
