Books R Hard
Kyle

Blergh. My new baby quiz, my sweet sweet child! How can I leave you for two whole weeks!? It’s almost a betrayal of everyone and everything I’ve worked so hard for. Promise me you’ll stick around, everyone – I will see you soon, and in the meantime your substitute quizmaster will take good care of you or your money back.* I don’t think I’ll ever read War and Peace. I’ll admit it, because I’m a grown up who knows what he knows – I don’t know anything about War and Peace, other than the common knowledge that it’s just a big ol’ book. Lotsa words. But based on what I’ve learned thanks to tonight’s quiz,

He's Not Mad, He's Just Drawn That Way
Kyle

Our new little baby quiz continues to grow! We had a few strong introductory weeks but we can chalk that up to beginners’ quizzes’ luck. Last week was a bit light, and tonight a tiny bit stronger. I’m always a little sad when I see teams leave halfway through a quiz – it’s impossible not to feel just a little bit judged, not to take it a little bit personal. I know it’s not – most folks who leave early joined up not knowing the commitment, the fortitude and personal depth it takes to persevere through a grueling 8-round quiz. It takes all the cunning one can muster, everything available in your head, and your mind, and also your brain. So I can forgive

My Brain's Not In Love with Eddie Vedder
Kyle

Hi there. So, here’s the thing. On behalf of Southpaw’s Perfect Pizza, the hearty and stalwart teams of tonight’s small but lively quiz, and the better angels of our humanity (if that’s not an expression, it is now), no more Eddie Vedder.  I’m not just referring to tonight’s round two, even though some of them were frankly nigh-indecipherable.  I’m referring to Eddie Vedder in general.  Or am I too late to fight against his particular form of mushmouthed flannel nonsense? Because here’s the thing – until very recently I really didn’t know anything about Eddie Vedder beyond the three minutes and twenty-five seconds

The Only Altered Beast Here is Me When I Argue on FB While Drinking, Amirite?
Kyle

This stinks.  I really enjoy writing this blog week after week, but almost each and every time I sit down to write, I’m coming hot off a screamin’ mess of a convo on Facebook.  The political atmosphere is thick with animosity and acrimony and it’s all I want to vent about. And THEN I think of what the polar opposite would be, what could I talk about that would make me achieve a state of zen? I try to pull from the quiz, so tonight the solution would have been – Sega Genesis.  Tell them about how it was your present from your family when you turned six, putting an almost literal bow on my second-best birthday ever (Pistol Pete’s Pizza – featuring

Next Time I'll Just Sing the Audio Round Myself
Kyle

And we are back.  A massive thank you to everyone at Southpaw’s Perfect Pizza in North Albany for welcoming a brand-new Geeks Who Drink quiz with open arms.  Tonight’s seven teams had a great time, I know that for sure, I took pre-and post-tests and had a net promoter score positive shift of 18 percent.  The data is there!  And thank you to all of those players for putting up with tonight’s headaches.  A quiz of this complexity is going to have a few growing pains as we fit into a new environment, like a hermit crab moving into a nice soda can after years inside a thimble.  Here’s the thing – Sony makes Blu-Ray players, right?
