Up, it’s time to sleigh. Cold runway!
A-Fed

As a Quizmaster that hosts at two venues, I am privy to seeing all types of round themes. I have to say, the famous quotes from movies that were run through Google translator may be my new favorite type of round. It really helps you appreciate just how difficult the English language can be. Even the internet don’t do it so good. Always are words in those skewed quotes that help, but it takes some real mental creativity to translate the translated English into the English that was originally spoken in the movie. I would like to refer to this paragraph as “The only thing that makes an English major more madder than choosing English as their major.”  In addition

Easily The Best Band of the '90s Named Smash Mouth
Micah

They were! It's empirically true. A fine time was had with our cozy crowd and a stupendous servers at Prohibition this week! It was my seventh time on the mic, subbing for the amazing Adam, and boy, if each time isn't more magical than the last.   We discussed things with comic book superhero names, bad movie reviews, movies with men raising children, famous sopranos, and random knowledge! In the end, Four Men and a Little Lady won it all! Huzzah!   Thanks for coming out for another week of Geeks Who Drink pub quiz, and see ya

This blog is not about flamingos
A-Fed

Tonight’s quiz was no easy task. It was like trying to tie shoes on a flamingo. Have you ever tried? I feel like it would be super tough... After round 2, no team aced a round. Much like a shoeless flamingo, the night was all over the place and bending knees backwards like there was no tomorrow. From baseball to TV detectives, foreign presidents to the Revolutionary War, it was the kind of night that required your team to have a bottomless well of knowledge. Tonight, the well was deepest for Triple B (and Lorenzo). If you were thinking about how money is tight lately, you likely hated round 3, where we had teams name the top 10 payrolls in Major League Baseball.

Bork Bork, Bang Bang… Same Same
A-Fed

Swedish Chef straight up crushed it tonight at Prohibition. The laughter in the bar during that round was the amount I hope to achieve when I am actively trying to make people laugh as a stand-up comic. It is so much easier to riff and coax laughter during a round when quizzers are already laughing at the content of the round. I am not saying every round should be this funny- how could we possibly handle laughing for two hours during a regular quiz? That said, I certainly appreciate them when they come along and I think there was a definite consensus on that humor at the bar tonight. Inspired by round 4 this week, here are three quick things you should know about Malaysia

Age is Irrelevant in Hollywood
A-Fed

Our visual round this week showcased Ellen Page, who is somehow 30 years old. Ellen is now the same age as me. I know, you were thinking, “Adam, have you been in high school for the last 15 years? You sure look like it!” Despite my youthful looks, I have not been able to easily pass as a high school student since I was 17. Once I had in those sideburns and receding hairline senior year, it became clear that I was not destined to play a perennial high school student in Hollywood. If that would have happened, I probably would not be the well-adjusted Quizmaster that you all love/ tolerate today. The song “Fancy” by she who shall not be named is not one I will

Who Doesn’t Enjoy a Nice Soak?
A-Fed

We had a round this week all about soaking it in, which led me to think about all of the different meanings of soaking. We have soaking wet, the soaker spray on the garden hose that just dumps it out the nozzle, soaking up liquid with a sponge, absorbing information/ experiences, and the classic sex position that fine upstanding religious folk use to keep their genitalia pure (search the article 10 Sexy Tips to Make Your Mormon Member Feel Alive Again for the First Time). Quizzers soaked in plenty of tidbits this time through, from proper etiquette tips to distinguishing the details that separate the almost identical movies Schindler’s List and Howard the

Turns out Q and J are the only two letters that don't appear on the periodic table. No love! (W is on there!) Another fun time during my sixth time subbing for QM Adam at Prohibition for our weekly Geeks Who Drink pub quiz! We discussed reasons to war with Australia, we listened ot awful covers, we named actors based on roles they've played (or, uh, tried to...), we talked about stolen things and things that are shaken, we identified animated characters, we had a hard-ass science round, we listened to TV shows with a cappella moments, and we battled our way through random knowledge.   In the end, Go

Quiz alla Puttanesca
A-Fed

is a significant percentage of people that speak English as their first language and they are still terrible at it. This is why I so greatly appreciate when we just decide to keep phrases or names from another language. You never look at a burrito the same when you think of it as a little donkey, and I have never before so badly wanted to eat spaghetti alla puttanesca, or “spaghetti in the style of a prostitute”. What a great way to eat food? How does a prostitute eat? Oh, the places your dining experiences will go… We learned that if you are looking to start listening to Latin music but don’t know where to start, you can check out “Now Esto Es Musica!”

Any song using a sample from a James Brown song has the motive to get you moving. Whether that means you are pushing it real good, knocking someone out because mama said to do it, or going insane in the brain, you are making moves to the tune of shakin’ grooves. It sure is amazing how a song can invoke feelings in your bones so readily. While we did learn that Bruno Mars did not sample James Brown in that one particular song, it should be noted that he totally sampled other people in that song. He could get away with sampling any song in the world, though. Dude has been straight crushing it over the last decade. He is one year older than me though, which means I always have one more

Who Makes New Year’s Resolutions?
A-Fed

Odds are we have all done it. We get to the end of a year, look back on our accomplishments, focus more on our shortcomings, and vow to turn it all around in the new year. Whether it is a diet, exercise routine, reading more, drinking less, or finally figuring out the correct way that adults tie their shoes, they are all ways we set ourselves up for failure. Seriously, who wants to commit to anything in January? The weather is unpredictable, your goals are not feasible given your life schedule, and who wants to read anyway? Oh, you do? That must be why you are reading this blog! Great resolution in that case. Up until a couple years ago, I would make my vows of changing the way I did

The Game of Names
A-Fed

Maybe it’s just me, but did you notice during this Monday quiz “Gee, this quiz would be practically nonexistent if we removed people’s names from all questions and/ or answers”? From the second question asking about Mickey Mouse and Dippy Dawg (yes, I’m also counting them because humans personify them) to the second round featuring Dave Matthews covers to the Round 3 that was just lists of actors found in the same TV show, the quiz was littered with human names the same way the streets of Chicago are littered with human waste… err, waste produced by humans… people trash! Yes, that term does not make it sound like just the pees and poos of humans

Float like Cat Power, sting like Rob Ford
A-Fed

The late great Muhammad Ali gave us the quote “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Butterflies and bees are quite opposite for two insects that fly around. If you were looking for two humans that are a similar degree of contrast, look no further than Cat Power and Rob Ford. With questions about these individuals in rounds 2 and 7, respectively, we covered quite a span of people in the public eye this week at quiz. Cat Power is a talented indie folk rock musician that brings to mind echoes of everything from Florence & the Machine to Sarah McLachlan. Her name is a stage name, obvi. Many of the quizzers reacted to her name with blank faces or “Who?”

Your regular QM, Adam, is likely nicer than I, but all of my regular quizzers know that if you give me the parenthetical part of the title and not the part outside of the parentheses, NO POINT FOR YOU! I'm a regular song title point Nazi. As such, all but one team fell victim to Nine Days' "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" at this week's quiz. Absolutely. Just remember it! Some things are universally funny, and some are much more divisive. Universally funny= Jim Gaffigan, cat videos, and hearing someone fart in public. Divisively funny= South Park, fart jokes, and the Youtuber Shittyflute. This was apparent during round 2 in this week’s quiz, where the reactions of quizzers at the bar ranged from gut busting laughter to telling me that they never wanted to hear a round like that ever again.
