Booed For Johnny Be Gonged The Week After Two Chuck Buried Team Names
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

Team Name of the Night:   Mighty Morphin Flower Arrangers The simplicity, the play-on-words, the odd and off-putting once-again timeliness. This is a good team name. And you guys didn’t laugh. I did. You’re golden, or whatever primary color Flower Arranger you want to be.   Runner-up Team Name of the Night: Cuck Cuck Goose  Let’s not play games here, Dumbo.   Everything’s Backwards. Are

SXGO HOME
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

We began our quiz last night with a round on the current U.S. cabinet. Fortunately, we got that shit out of the way early. Then we could move on to something we all agree on: being tired of SXSW. GTFO SXSWers get the team name of the night award for their lack of hospitality and for being a literal rallying cry at the quiz. Hoots of insider approval littered the courtyard when I read team names. But don’t bullshit me. Half of you guys looked like you’d been through SEAL team hell week because you’d either sat through way too many movies, or spent too much time in the sun drinking and watching bands. Bitching about SXSW is a tried and true Austin

In Which My Lesbro Tries To Hook Up With Brooklyn Decker
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

Twitter is a weird thing. My roommate and lesbro, Chelsea, didn’t make it to quiz last night. She opted instead to go to some SXSW party that Brooklyn Decker and Mark Cuban were going to be at, for the free booze and a shot at hooking up with Brooklyn Decker. You might be saying, yeah right, but have you met Chelsea? She’s brimming with confidence. Basically, I wouldn’t say it’s out of the realm of possibility. I returned home from quiz working on a great writing idea (keep coming to our quizzes because there’s great new stuff coming up) in my head and there was no Chelsea. So I went on Twitter and tagged Brooklyn Decker in a tweet

A, C, L, and U and G and J and X
Swagu

It rained Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so your girl moves the quiz inside for Sunday. It is dry, cool evening. The Weather Gods laughed. The quiz kicked off over the sound of their laughter with a round where each answer contained the letters A, C, L, and U. Most of you wrote the letters A, C, L, and U in big letters at the top of the answer sheet, then proceeded to write down answers that contained none of those answers in a “I-Know-The-Rules-But-Fuck-You” kind of way. Well played.   The audio round was all about song titles that are questions to not ask your Tinder date. Pro tip: don’t ask your Tinder date about their criminal

Harvey K-Tel
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

Kyrsti, the illustrious QM of a Tuesday quiz down south, swung by last night to kind of hang out and help with the quiz. As expected, the Oscars abducted some of our normal quiz folk. It doesn’t hurt my feelings; I know I’m not as much of a red carpet spectacle. I’m all wang and no Vera, as they say. (“As who say?” you might say, but just fucking trust me on this, okay?)   Kyrsti scored the best moment of the night in what could have been the worst moment of the night. She was reading round six and pronounced “Harvey Keitel,” as “Harvey Keetle” (rhymes with “beetle”).

Three Lines, Infinite Feelings
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

I sort of remember when I first learned about haikus. I may be wrong, but I think it was when I was in fifth or sixth grade, her in Austin at Robert E. Lee Elementary. (Go Roadrunners!) I’ve always been split between thinking they were total bullshit or the easiest way to get around the poetry aspect of poetry. Limericks have just as steadfast a structure, but meter and rhyme scheme make them more cumbersome to construct. Not for everybody. I used to work at a bar in Providence, Rhode Island with a guy named Dave-Dave 2 (to differentiate him from Dave 1 AKA Lederhosen Dave AKA Counselor AKA Worst Attorney Ever, or Dave Whites Die (from his paycheck’s misspelling of his

This Time With Round Averages and High Scores!
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

First things first:   That flash photograph we-“you” know who “we” is-tried last night sucked. It was all crazy Village of the Damned eyes, which doesn’t really work on people who are smiling. #neveragain   For your edification-remember, I read this aloud three times-here’s the most cumbersome question of the night, and maybe the week:   “That semi-permeable capillary net that keeps body fluids out of your thinkin’ meat and vice versa-it goes by what triple-B phrase?”

The Almost Perfect Game
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

Everybody heard it last night, but I have to point out this week’s winners, Platinum Vagine. They had an almost perfect quiz of 100 out of a possible 104 points. They missed one point, finally, in round seven. That point served as proof that Anne Hathaway either ruins everything, or is an unexpected secret weapon. Choose your side! Now! And then they made it through the round eight random knowledge minefield with a damn fine score of 13 out of 16. Wow!   That bit of quiz heaven ended our fourth week at Draught House. Since we’re off next week for the Super Bowl, just as we’re getting to

You Can Do It
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

We had our first outdoor quiz last night at Draught House. We didn’t really have those in Rhode Island. Even when it was nice. You don’t want people getting used to something that’s just going to be taken away from them so soon.   It was also the first time since we started at Draught House and haven’t had a tie. Everything was pretty clear cut, with Gudetama! taking an early lead, held onto closely by regulars Low Hanging Fruit. The LHF crew were DQ’ed because of team size, so pay no attention to their points. It means nothing. They’re basically on steroids because of

Push It Real Good
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

Immediately as the Cowboys had their season ended, we began last night’s quiz. Honestly, I didn’t care who won; I just wanted their game to end so our game could begin. Then our first two rounds were a lot like the end of that playoff game for the Cowboys. Most teams were crushed trying to find the context clues to figure out the months in which certain things are celebrated. Financial literacy? April. Get Ready for Kindergarten month? That’s August. For most of it, the majority of teams were just a tad off.    And then we came to round two, with songs name-dropping The Beatles. It went about as well as that press conference where John said they

My First Date With Mr. Draught House
Dr. Rex N. F. Echt, Professor of New Jack Swing

I don’t usually date. It seems to work out that way for me. I start hanging out and then just have a significant other. Then the dating happens. It’s not the traditional route, I know, but it works for me.    We had a first date at our very first quiz at Draught House, so there was all kinds of getting to know each other. Guys, if you’re reading this, you’re adorable, you look cute as hell together, and I wish you the best. Also, sorry I made a fingering joke about you during your first date*. (*Not really sorry.)    We went through a bunch of things last night: a round on tall people, another on millinery and mercury
