Everything's Coming Up Purple
Paddycake

I found out right after it was announced. I was at work, and they started talking about it in my team chatroom. At first, I thought it was one of those online hoaxes that  are so popular. But, sadly, it was not. I immediately went to my music library to find out what all I had. I was very sad to discover I had 3 songs: "Purple Rain," "Raspberry Beret," and "7." "7" is still, to this day, my favorite Prince song. I guess you could say I was a casual fan. I liked hearing his music on the radio, and sang along to almost all of his stuff from the 80s, and early 90s... but never really enough to seek out purchasing his music. So, I decided to scour Google Music for more of his stuff.

I started quizzing about 2 years ago when my best friend got me involved on his quiz team. Since then I have rarely missed a quiz at our regular venue on Monday Nights.

Over the years people have come and gone, at one point we had a regular team of 5, that kicked a lot of ass and took a lot of names. We even competed in Geek Bowl 2013 under the name How I Met Your Mothra.

People have come and gone since then, but at the very least, 3 of our team remained quizzing every Monday. After Geek Bowl, the bestie got hired as a quizmaster, so I decided to do the same the next time auditions rolled around.

So here I am, Quizmaster Paddycake. I started at Molly Malone's in Spring, and now I shall be taking over Cedar Creek on Monday nights as well. Big shoes to fill there, but I feel confident it'll all be awesome!

Floaters not Sinkers

Thanks for letting me take Patrick's lovely place last night! It was a pleasure to take the reins of one of the oldest quiz venues in the city. Thank goodness I live just a few blocks away, so I could lazy river my way over there.  We started last night with a round on noses. It looks like you guys have seen Frozen, or a snowman, which is a great sign that you don't live under a rock. You can all be my Huckleberries. The music round was centered around the first letters of the first eight elements. Even if you didn't know that intel, you could still get pretty far recognizing the clips. Lots of you scored very well! I did need to alert you to the existence of the band Asia..

I started quizzing way back in 2009 in a little 'ol town called Austin, TX. After making the move to Houston, I became a regular quizzer at Little Woodrow's Rice Village on Tuesday nights. It's more fun to win when you're beating grad students and doctors. A year went by, and I grew into quite the quiz addict. It was time to up the ante. I needed to be closer to the quiz action. At the auditions, I fought other contestants to the death to achieve an unexpected, well-fought victory. I now host Monday and Tuesday evenings while drinking delicious beer to forget the things I did to get here.

Before my quiz life, I attended school in San Antonio, where I became an English major and a rabid Spurs fan. During the day I work as a private tutor and professional taco slinger. When not engaged in any of these wonderful occupations, you'll find me buried in a book somewhere or out and about with my Australian Shepherd, Jam. I can even be spotted playing quiz on a Wednesday or Thursday. I can't quit you, quiz.

Join me for all my hosting smart-assery at Neil's Bahr Monday nights in East Downtown or in Rice Village at Little Woodrow's on Tuesdays.

Attack of the Googlies!
Paddycake

So, we got a funny answer last night, and a bit of contention about one certain answer in round 8, and I plan to address both of these here.   So, Dungeons and Dragons has many things in to... some of them have odd names... Most, however, are based in mythologies here on Earth: Dragons, Kobolds, Orcs... even some of the more obscure things like Githyankis, Rakshasas, Ettins, and Devas are all rooted somwhere in mythology. So, if dibbly-dobblies and googlies become a thing in D&D... here's how I imagine a game would go down...   DM: You enter a dark corridor, the stench of fiddly-faddlies wafts through the air, as you descend into the depths

Our House... In the Middle Of Our Street
Paddycake

Howdy peeps! So last night was a bit weird. I apparently forgot how to talk and read a couple of times, and during round 8, we had a house go down the street! Check the photos! Last night we also discovered that when someone does a sexy saxophone cover of a pop song, it immediately sounds like the theme song to a 1980's sitcom! Who knew? What else did we learn last night? Let's see...Teslas are apparently very popular as is Kanye West for some ungodly reason, Blade Runner is likely about to be ruined by an unnecessary sequel, you guys seem to know a lot about Robert Downy Junior (stalkers), if someone is a murderer they can just be classified as aggressive, 12

Hidden Ireland
Paddycake

I found something in my sleep last night. Typically, my dreams are strange and nonsensical. Most of the time explaining them to people just leave then staring at my blankly. Last night, however, I had a very vivid dream with a full narrative storyline that could easily be explained. It was interesting enough that I am considering trying to turn it into a short story or a novella. So, as per usual, I'm sharing it on my blog.   So, the dream began with me and my best friend Brent sitting in an outdoor area, likely a park or something, and we found some money, but it was money we had never seen before. Upon inspection, it looked like dollar bills, but the denominations

The Adventures of Cyrano, Figaro, and Kevin
Paddycake

I love it when you guys give me ridiculous answers just to keep from having a blank space on your answer sheets. Last night, thankfully, most of you knew that the Three Musketeers were Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. But I got one answer that made me laugh... Cyrano, Figaro, and Kevin.   I can just imagine the adventures of a highly romantic, yet facially disfigured man, a cute fluffy black and white cat, and the star of the silver screen Mr. Bacon. In my head it goes a little something like this:   Lights up on a mansion wall, surrounded by thick shrubbery. In the dimly lit evening glow, a young beautiful woman stands on the balcony. She sighs

I Didn't Have Any Pie On Pi Day
Paddycake

And that is a shame... but being the person I am in my household. I would have been the one to shop for the ingredients, then make the pie, so that kinda makes it not all that special. Food (especially desserts or sweets) are always better when someone else makes them. Just ask my housemates about the Mexican chocolate cinnamon rolls I made from scratch last weekend.   Anyhow, last night was Pi day, and there was nary a pie to be eaten. Ho hum. Anyhow, we had a quiz on pi day, and that's pretty awesome. So let's talk about it, because nothing's sadder than the day after pi day when you still don't have any pie... not even belated pie.   First

Whatever It Is, My Skin Don't Like It
Paddycake

Sunday, I participated in the Houston AIDS Walk for the Houston Bears team. Since I had a tragic run in with a small flight of stairs after several cocktails one night, I have a really bad ankle. Most of the time, I can deal with it just fine. Short to moderate distances with resting in between don't cause any problems, but a long steady walk, or spending close to a full day on my feet will render me unable to walk for days afterwards. Usually I have a small ace-bandage ankle brace that I wear for just such occasions. Well, the last time I wore it, I noticed the elasticity was giving out, so I wanted to get one of the nice wrap-around velcro ones before the walk, and I did. I

Not As Many As I Expected
Paddycake

I expected to be inundated with Oscar-related team names, but I didn't get nearly as many as I expected. But I don't think anyone could ever top The Oscars and Porno Both Start With a Lesbian Ordering Pizza. That was epic. So, what did you all think of The Oscars (those of you that watched them?) I thought the biting criticism of the boycott was hilarious, and completely justified. Tracy Morgan as The Danish Girl was so funny... and that mislead by Angela Basset was amazing! So in case you missed the Oscars, here's a quick, no spoiler recap of some of the moments. Nice comfy couch! What do people see/hear in Sam Smith? I don't get it. OOO Kerry

Crushed By Thighs During Sex … That’s How I Want To Go!

an entire round on ways people die, but nonetheless we had a great time, and here’s how it all went down.   Round 1 was a short and sweet round where I gave you a two-word description of a country using it’s ISO code as the initials, and you told me the country. Most of you did pretty well, except for the ones that put Monte Carlo, which is not a country but is, in fact, a city… or a car. The other popular incorrect answer was Greece instead of Georgia. But good effort!   Round 2 was all about Trump parody songs, and they were a riot. Just name the original song and artist like normal. No perfect scores this week for round 2, but

I Think It's AlreadyBeen Solved
Paddycake

In response to my favorite team name last night, I think that problem was solved pretty nicely by what we all knew was the only real solution to the problem. I'm not going to off on a diatribe about him, because I don't like to speak ill of the dead, even when the dead was someone like him. So, let's just do a quick recap. Round 1: Presidential Anagrams, where I learned that just because there's a Z in a phrase, I shouldn't expect everyone to get the only president with a Z in his name.  Round 2: Bands/artists  with animals in their names being interrupted by a cow. Weird. Hello still cracks me up in the way the cow's moo is almost in the correct key for the song. Round

Cookie Monster Sings the Hits
Paddycake

If you ask me, Cookie Monster needs to make an entire album of cookie-centric covers of pop songs. ROund 2 last night was delightful! Only 2 of them were Cookie Monster singing but I wanted more. I guess I relate to him, having a very distinct love of cookies. My mother was a pastry chef so we always had homemade cookies in the house, and I make them pretty often too. Maybe I'll make a huge batch and bring them to quiz sometime. Anyway, we had 8 rounds of craziness last night. Village Idiots Savant had a perfect round 2 and jokered for an early lead, which they held on to for most of the game. Round 8 proved to be their downfall, as they slipped down

Paddycake

Hey there Quizzers! You know, the British National Anthem is a bit weird. They keep saying God save the queen... but I don't think she needs much saving. She sits in her palace surrounded by armed guards under lock and key, and when she goes out, she has more armed escorts and probably bullet-proof windows in her vehicle. That is one safe queen... I don't think you need to ask God to keep her around. I mean she's been queen since Eisenhower was president, she's obviously pretty damn safe. Anyway, just musings. We had a quiz Monday night, and you guys rocked it. I saw more high scores than I have seen in a while, which was awesome. Amidst the tomfoolery of rounds

He created a business which grew into a community of employees that felt like a family, he built the Houston Bears from the ground up and created a real sense of purpose and community within its ranks, and he took the quizmasters of Houston and shaped us into a tight knit family that took care of each other. This was evident last night when so many of you showed up. More than even I expected!   Hosting this for you was an honor. I was a bit bummed that one of my favorite artists passed away yesterday. I was almost dreading the team names tonight because I knew a lot of them would be Bowie related. Thank you all for not only having awesome homages to Bowie in your team names, but also being super respectful in them. Ashes to Ashes Stardust to Stardust was my favorite, and honestly made me well up a bit when I read it.   Where would we be without Bowie? Artists that push the envelope would not be so common... hell Art in general would not so common. The movie “Velvet Goldmine” would likely have never been made, which would be an absolute tragedy.   So
