A Three-Way Tie for Wookie of the Year
Ben

Last night at The Rising had it all: questions about TV shows, the brain, and songs where the lead singer needs some cheering up. But most of all, in a terrific bout of corporate synergy, we had a round of Disney songs in which none other than Chewbacca was doing the singing. However, the most exciting part of the night was at the end, when three teams tied at the top. This is the first-ever three-way tie we've had at The Rising, so it was an exciting competition. The result of the five-question tiebreaker was, of course, a tie - so we had to move onto YET ANOTHER tiebreaker question between two of the three teams. There, The Sinking took command, as they came closer

March Drunkenness
Ben

Last night was a rollicking one at The Rising. Since it was the night before St. Patrick's Day, the whiskey and Guinness was flowing and Irish music was playing. In addition, it was the start of March Madness, so all the basketball was on TV, and there was a round about team nicknames. Your QM, who has spent time in both Vermont and Indiana, was not happy when Purdue beat Vermont and made his displeasure known to the bar after a question about Purdue's nickname (the Boilermaker, which is a drink that combines a shot of whiskey and a beer). The quiz itself was yet again very competitive. But thanks to a perfect music round, Liquor? I Hardly Know Her came in first, with

Geek Bowl in the home of the Super Bowl champs
Ben

I'm back in action after a vacation to Mexico last week. I had a great trip, in which I got to see ruins, hang with iguanas, go ziplining and snorkeling, but mostly hanging out at the pool with 15 others on a combined bachelor/bachelorette party trip. While the trip was fun, it's always good to come home too - especially when quiz has 15 teams and one of them is named Ben's Back. This week at The Rising, we had questions about skulls and islands in honor of the new King Kong movie, a mystery theme visual round, and a mashup music round that every team got at least 11 points on, which was very impressive. Too Sexy for Our Beer took home the grand prize,

But I still have to do this blog!! Hi friends!  Ginny here, subbing in for Ben who is living it up and drinking margaritas in Mexico.  I had a blast hosting tonight, thanks! Recap: We had drinks from Tullamore Dew Irish whisky for bonuses tonight...our bartender Ian, an Irishman himself, kept saying the name and I was missing it...what was that?  "Tulla-more-jews"??  Shots were had by many including myself! Jumpy Robot  lead the quiz all night, however on their round 8 answer sheet they were honest enough to admit they had a 7th team member.  Unfortunately it meant disqualification for them, but left both Tater teams

I was overjoyed that last night's first round was all about the country Sweden, because I lived in Stockholm for four months. I loved the country and am sad that I haven't been back there ever since. Regardless, the round was a nice trip down memory lane about the country filled with IKEAs, Volvos, and hot blonde people. Despite all the recent fake news about Sweden stemming from Donald Trump's Fox News-infested brain, it is a great country and I highly recommend visiting if you get the chance. As for the quiz itself, we had 17 teams and a tie for first last night! However, it was It's Miller Time who snuck by over The Sinking with more points

I Would Quiz 4 U
Ben

With Prince's music now available on Spotify, I decided that the only appropriate thing to do for quiz this week was to play Prince songs in between questions and rounds. It was such a good decision that might do that exclusively at every quiz from now on. (Probably not.) Other than being a Prince DJ, I also had a quiz to run last night at the Rising, and it was a particularly fun one that featured a 16 POINT VISUAL ROUND, which most teams did very well on. I guess people are well-versed at figuring out famous people giving handshakes! In addition, we had an entire round on Franz Schubert, as well as a question in which you had to identify if I was naming the title of a Taylor Swift song or

No Days Off
Ben

During the Pats' Super Bowl victory parade, Bill Belichick said to a bunch of people who had taken the day off of work that his team took "no days off." This mantra applied at the Rising last night, where despite a foot of snow in the Boston area, quiz still went on as usual. And despite the blizzard conditions, we still had 10 teams show up.  Questions raised the gamut from current events, to Bible stories about a vengeful ass-kicking God, to songs that were incredibly slooooowwwwwed doooowwwwwn. We also had teams try to figure out whether a quote was from the Dalai Lama, or Winnie the Pooh. Ultimately, Adolphus's Buschhhhhh were the wire-to-wire winners,

Trump vs. Goodell
Ben

So it's the Super B- err, "Big Game," this weekend (don't want to get sued for copyright infringement!), so everyone here is pumped about the Patriots. It's somewhat strange to see all of liberal New England root for a team that features a star quarterback, coach, and owner who have all expressed their support for a certain game show host masquerading as President. But then again, if the Pats were to win this and stick it to Roger Goodell once and for all, then it will be worth it for their fans to overlook personal politics just this once. It's a strange storyline, but after living in an area where the closest team tried to tattle on the Patriots after their 45-7 victory a few years ago,

Stream of Consciousness Blog About Nuts; Surely Nothing to Be Read Into That
AmBITCHion

Who's ready for a stream of consciousness blog? You know what's weird? I think most foods that come in assorted varieties all mixed together generally taste good when eaten together. Like, if I eat 2 Skittles at a time, it's cool if they're not the same color because the combined flavor is appealing. Same for fruit snacks, Chex Mix - sometimes I even try to get a piece each of all the mixin's in one bite - Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish-- Jesus, I eat like a twelve year-old!... But mixed nuts should not actually be eaten mixed. There is a clear hierarchy in the respective flavors of each nut and so they must be consumed in order. First pistachios because duh. They're the creme de la

Two Rooms One Quiz
Ben

Last night was a big deal at The Rising. First of all, quiz happened the bar's one-year anniversary celebration, which meant we were not only doing our usual bonus prizes, but we also had $200 worth of prizes for quiz winners, and we raffled off ski passes to a local mountain as well as some other terrific prizes. In addition, we added a second speaker, meaning that people in both rooms at the bar can now participate in quiz! And it came in handy, as Logjammin sat in the back room and came in first in a quiz night that featured questions about first ladies, circuses, and three-second clips of TV theme songs. Rounding out the top three were Make America Drunk

If You Play Our Quiz, Urine for a Good Time
Ben

As a kid, I watched SportsCenter a lot. Back in the days before smartphones and Twitter and highlights at your fingertips, it was the show you had to watch if you wanted to see your favorite athletes throw down dunks, hit home runs, or catch ridiculous touchdowns. SportsCenter also showed NASCAR highlights every weekend. At the end of every highlight, the anchors would announce where Dick Trickle finished in the race. This always cracked me up, because after all, the dude's name was Dick Trickle. I'd forgotten about this guy's legacy until last night at The Rising, where round 4 consisted of eight pee-related jokes (Hmm, wonder why this round just happened to come this week?), and

New Year, Same Quiz
Ben

The first quiz night of 2017 at The Rising kicked off with 13 teams and a come-from-behind victory (a 15-point joker round in Round 8 will help with that!) As usual, the topics of last night's quiz ranged in both breadth and depth, as we had an entire round devoted to people named Jane, questions about Nevada and Utah, fake television spinoffs, and an audio round that consisted of famous screams. The winners of the night were Can't Hear Shit, who obviously could hear at least something, if they scored 86 points on the night. I got 6 jobs I don't get tired came in second, but with seven players on their team, they kindly allowed Whatever you

2016 Will Not Go Gently
Ben

This week's pub quiz at the Rising was mostly a year in review night. We learned about the current events, songs, and movies of the year, and also remembered the celebrity deaths in what is sure to be the longest In Memoriam montage in Oscar history in a couple months. In addition, another round tonight was a tribute to the eight years of President Obama. All in all, it was a good way to close out the final quiz of 2016. But this year wasn't all that bad! After all, I moved to Boston over the summer, and The Rising started its quiz night in September. And I'm excited to continue hosting here, every Thursday night at 8, in the coming year, and I hope to keep seeing all you wonderful

Quiz the Season
Ben

Last night at The Rising, we had several Christmas-themed round - after all, we're only a couple days away from America's favorite paean to commercialism. My favorite round, personally, was "8-Bit Christmas," a round of Christmas songs that sounded like they were on your old Nintendo. There were two notable Christmas omissions from the questions last night though. One was Die Hard, which IS a Christmas movie and a dang good one too. The other, however, is one we can be thankful didn't make it into the quiz, and that's the obnoxious "Wonderful Christmastime" Paul McCartney song. It's really a shame this song was ever made because even though McCartney had so many great hits, we

Lewboski's Come From Behind Victory Shocks All
Chris

In what many are calling the biggest come from behind victory since Sisterhood of the Traveling Panties part III, Little Lebowski Urban Achievers were sitting in the middle of the pack the entire game until a well planned 30 point final round catapulted them to victory.  Other teams were stunned when they were left saying "How" as the LLUA's walked away with the first place!Perhaps most surprised was the team that was in first place from the 2nd round on, Farty McFly, they were consistent with almost all rounds, and themselves had a 30 point round, the 2nd.  It seems though a wrong answer here and there cost them what could have been
