Bey and Jay—I’m Looking At You
Swagu

The theme for the quiz this week was the Illuminati. The questions were complete with mentions of skulls, bones, all seeing eyes, Stonecutters, and Jews. Yet what about billion dollars on the elevator? Some of you understood the theme, some of you didn’t, but all you need to know is that the Illuminati is worked overtime behind the scenes to secure to rise of people's whose names rhyme with "dedonsay" and "play g". That is all, but you didn’t hear it from me.   This week was a wonderful in which every team playing won a prize! Yay! Smiles all around! First place went to Drink Apple Juice—OJ Kills, followed closely by Bring Me A Cucumber, Whipped

I know I just saw you people last week, but it feels like SO MUCH LONGER. As always, thank you for joining me, and I hope you were able to find a parking spot without paying or getting ticketed (unlike me :( ) A quizzer told me that instead of current events, we should have rounds on “past current events”. You mean, like, history, Vince? So round 1 was all about made up agenda of real people. I wish Kanye West was a question. Pretty sure his agenda is wake up, be the greatest of all time, break MacBook Air, drink Earl Grey. The audio round was super easy if you’ve listened to the radio at any point in the past five years. One of the answers

R.I.P
Swagu

On Monday, the Houston QM team received word that we have lost one of our own: Gene Landry. Little Woodrows EaDo signed with GWD early on, and it was Gene who was the inaugural QM. His reputation preceded him, and I knew I had big shoes to fill. Quizzers still stopped by and asked about Gene years after he had moved to another venue. I probably wouldn’t have the pleasure of spending my Tuesday nights with you rascals if it wasn’t for Gene, and I send my deep condolences to those of you who had the pleasure of quizzing with him. And with that, quiz. Quiz was had and quiz was good. I hope you all brushed up on your presidential history before coming because the dead

It was an emotional evening. The Goblin King himself had just passed away, and parking was impossible. But the best way to mourn is in groups, so I like to think quiz played a little part in your recovery. The quiz opened with me doing the chicken dance. To answer your question, yes, it was related to the quiz. I tried to get the whole bar to do it, but it just never caught on. Round 2 was a round on coffeeshop covers of popular songs. If the only answers you knew were “Fireflies” by Owl City and “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor, know that I judged THE FUCK out of you. What do you know about opera? If the answer is “a lot”,

Sweet Nine Inches of Skin Flutes
Swagu

With the new year comes new energy, new faces, and new jokes about penises. Yup, the peen jokes were strong tonight. Some things change, some things stay the same. And tonight, like every other night, I’m happy to see all of y’alls faces anyway! But I was especially happy to receive the gift of light from It’s the Great Blumpkin, Charlie Brown! Urban Dictionary was wrong, blumpkins aren’t as bad as they say. We started off the first quiz of the year with questions about the first week of January. We are nothing if not topical at GWD. Flute covers are a thing, and

The Place…was Giddings Texas.   The Time…was the summer of 2013   The Reason I Was There…I’d rather not disclose.   But there I was, in Giddings, in the absolute dog-assiest part of August…or was it early September? Anyway, it was fucking hot Hot HOT! And I was stuck doing a couple days of outdoor work, which included but was not limited to chasing shade in a county fair pavilion on the edge of town, one of those places where if you miss the turn to get into it, you’re S.O.L for at least a mile or two before you can legally turn around, and even then you run the risk of being used for ping

4 Calling Quizzers
Swagu

I do my spiel before every quiz that goes "quiz consists of 8 rounds...no cheating...don't shout out the answers...if you don't like swearing get the &%*$# out". Yadda yadda. But I feel like some of those are really common sense. No cheating? No shit. it's a quiz. No shouting out the answers? No shit. It's a quiz.   Steve Harvey Brain Trust was vocal last night, but especially so when some random guy shouted out the answer to a bluegrass cover. Quiz is competitive, but sometimes all the quiz participants can agree on one thing: if you try to ruin quiz, you will have a room full of drinkers yell at you. I love when my quizzers shut assholes

You remember high school? When your mom making mashed potatoes for the 3rd time that week pissed you off and you ran to your room and jammed to an alt rock band from the early 2000s? What an emotional time. Round 2 brought all that shit back for many of our quizzers. The turmoil, the teenage love, the writing your angst on your converse knockoffs all came bubbling to the surface with New Found Glory covers of. . .soft alt rocks from the 90s that also all sounded the same. This round was tricky. David Campbell Couldn’t Make It Cause He’s Butt Chugging wished they were listening to Adele and wrote her down as answer for 5. Shh. If dollars were wishes I

You all looked a bit svelte this week, and from that I take it that an excellent Thanksgiving was had by all. And the good vibes kept on coming because we had not one, two, three, but four, FOUR, possible double point rounds. With it came our highest scoring quiz ever! My breath was held, my heart raced, my Hot Woody was drank.  This chick in an elf hat was loud and I know I’m hilarious but cackles that interrupt my quiz aren’t wanted. My quizzers were like “chick in elf hat shut up” and she was like “we’re in a bar” and quizzers were like “but respect tho” and then chick left and I liked that. I was hoping she would leave

Gobble gobble bitches. So happy to see you beautiful people every week, but especially Thanksgiving week. Thanksgiving is a problematic event to celebrate but damnit do I love having a vacation. The answers to the first round was a person with a bird name (except Turkey). It was Florence Nightingale who saved lives in the Crimean War (not Mother Goose, Jameson, Rocks and Cash) and The Partridge Family that won the 1971 Bes tNew Artist Grammy, not the Crownettes. But bonus points for trying, Beers on Stephanie. All you need to know about Round 2 is that one of the songs that has to be guessed was Lose Yourself, and

Fight the power and the unibrow
Swagu

I’ve been getting a kick out of the Round 2’s lately. Last week we had Clay Aiken singing some tunes, and this week we had baller music from the past 3 decades.  1985, 1995, and 2005 were quality years for music. 1985 is the year of my goto Karaoke song, “Careless Whisper”. Technically, the song is credited to Wham! But, real talk, we all know who did the true heavy lifting in that group. George Michael changed the landscape of music, I tell ya what! Tell me that “Freedom 90” don’t make you dance, and I’ll tell you that you’re a liar. Round 3 was on Huey Long, Huey P. Newton (fight the power), and Huey Lewis.

Sometimes people complain that Geeks Who Drink is shit and that may have been true for our first round this quiz. All of the answers in Round 1 contained the letters S-H-I-T. But big ups to the teams that said fuck the rules, I'm going to put whatever the hell I want to. Like Them Dread Guys that put down Dakota Fanning as an answer.    A few weeks ago we had a round on Jewel covers that made everyone's ears bleed. In terms of auditory torture, that round set the bar pretty high. But we at GWD are overachievers and aim for the sky, so our Round 2 was on Clay Aiken covers. I don't know if Clay has a better voice or just picks better songs

"This is the soundtrack to my 8th grade dance"
Swagu

I claim to friends that I play Nickelback in a post-ironic way, but I really play their music in an "I-like-this-song-for-real" way. Don't even act like that photograph doesn't make you laugh! The last song of Round 2 was "Hero" from the original Spider-Man, and it was played over the credits in that movie. It brought up memories of '02 for me, and also reminded me that I haven't done karaoke in awhile and that's a damn shame. So I had to play "Hero" in its entirety after the round, which led into "Vindicated" by Dashboard Confessional, and so it goes. No ragrets here. I'm looking forward to visiting the hits of 2004 next week. Anyway, tonight ended in not one, but two (TWOOOOO)

Heeeeerre's Swagu!   Ah, Halloween. My favorite non-federal holiday, where I get to dress up and pretend to be an ass kicking pirate and make jokes about my booty. I can do without all the pumpkin shit but, well, you can't have everything.   Last night I dressed up as Michonne from The Walking Dead, the go to costume for black chicks with braids since 2010. And we are back, in full force, with another quiz. Round 1 was an introduction into pop culture and verbs. First question was a reference to Sean Combs, aka he of a thousand nicknames. If you call him Puff Daddy and she calls him Diddy, she’s too young for you, bro. All the deadheads and folk music fans had something to flash the peace sign at with Round 2, a round on covers of songs originally performed by ’69 Woodstock musicians. I always forget Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” is not an original of hers, but damn it should be. She’s an American treasure and it’s a shame that we lost her to the Swiss. The fucking Swiss, man. BSC
