Look, I'll Just Call You, Okay?
Troy D.

As I'm writing this, I'm at a local donut shop sipping on an iced latte, and they're playing all sorts of classic country music - which is pretty awesome. RIght now, the song on the playlist is "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man", a classic by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. And it's a fun song about how these two lovers are separated by the river, so they vow that they're going to swim across the river to hook up. Now let's stop and think about this for a second. These two people, who clearly have already met each previously in some capacity on one side of the river or the other, are proposing swimming across said river to hook up.This song was written in 1973. THERE WERE BRIDGES

Well, Well. That Went Adequately.
Troy D.

Well, what did we learn tonight, boys and girls? We learned that nobody can identify famous people signing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." (Ballgame? Ball Game? Anyway.) I had such faith for this round too - I even decided to opt for it instead of a video round because I absolutely love watching quizzers take on people who sing badly. But the high score was a 3. The median score was a 2. Out of 8. Everybody got Ozzy right, and it just kinda fell down the wormhole from there. But here's the thing... who can identify who's singing that song at the game anyway? First off, most everybody at a ball game is pretty trashed anyway by the 7th inning. Secondly, all the leader has

200 Quizzes And He Still Can't Run a Powerpoint
Troy D.

Well, would you look at that. Not only are we celebrating a year here at The Well, but I'm celebrating 200 quizzes with Geeks Who Drink! (Disclaimer: this isn't actually my 200th, but I thought it would have been ridiculously silly to celebrate a year at The Well - then bring in a cookie cake again a week later for 200.) A lot of you know me as a polished quizmaster, but let me tell you - my first night on the job was shit. I tried way too hard to be funny (which I still do, but ya know) - I couldn't get my spreadsheet to load on my iPad, so I had to keep score by hand... and yeah. But, hey, 200 quizzes and a little more than 2 years later, and I still screw up - I'm just better about

Round 3 this week was a geography round entitled "Sooner or Later: Hey, Is That Carmen Sandiego?" - and of course, that required me to play the theme song to "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?". You know, that was a damn good game show - with The Chief and Rockapella, and the cute animations and all... but it was a cruel bitch too. The end game (for those who have never seen it) involved running around a big giant map and placing markers on various locations. So, for example, if they had a map of the United States, and host Greg Lee said "Tennessee", they'd have to place this 4-foot marker on Tennessee - it would light up, and eventually, they'd get enough to win

Westcott iPoint Evolution: 2015-2017
Troy D.

When I plugged in my pencil sharpener tonight and tried it, I got nothing. Which means the end of that sharpener. Which sounds completely stupid to blog about - but hear me out. I bought that sharpener shortly after I joined the Geeks family 2-years-and-change ago. I was scorekeeping for Ken in Seattle (who is GWD's marketing manager and stuff) and he's tough on scorekeepers. And by tough, I mean slave-driver. One of his fun tasks he had me do was sharpen his pencils - every one of them - with one of those dollar-store sharpeners that are about the size of a Lego brick. And of course, I said eff that noise, bought this thing, and have never looked back. And now

Whatever Your Name Is, Your Muffins Taste Like Crack
Troy D.

Tonight, we learned (or affirmed our knowledge of, depending on how you look at it) that the owners of Krispy Kreme and Caribou Coffee are buying up Panera Bread. First and foremost: I had no idea that Krispy and Caribou were owned by the same company. Huh. That explains why both of them are regret foods (as in: you buy a donut / you buy a coffee, expect it to be fantastic, it turns out meh, and you do it again expecting the same result). But here's the thing about Panera Bread. In every city and state in this great land, Panera Bread is - well - Panera Bread. Except for the St. Louis area -- where it's called Saint Louis Bread Company. I mean, you'd think having to print up

Today’s Hot Topic: The Webber Index
The Duck Guy

You have come here for one purpose and one alone.  I propose that the level of “emo” in any Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is in direct proportion to the amount of eyeliner worn by members of its main cast.  At the bottom would be “The Beautiful Game” and “School of Rock.”  At the very top – a range considered totally and insufferably emo – would be “Cats,” “Sunset Boulevard” and “Starlight Express.”  (The former gets a pass though because all the characters are quite literally supposed to be cats.) “The Phantom of the Opera” falls somewhere in the

(I may be off by a couple.) What is it about this song? It peaked at NUMBER 4 on the charts, and is from a movie that Kel Mitchell probably doesn't remember even being in. "Walking on the Sun" even did better than this song. I mean, I get it, it's a catchy song. But.... "All Star"? This is the song that new Internet memes are made of?Let me know when you get that round of Amy Grant mashups done, and we'll talk. Thanks,Troy

Well, Michelle, Time For You to Get a Job
Troy D.

Round 1 brought up some "Father-Uncle Love" in the form of "Full House" (PHRASING). For those of you living under a rock, local news anchor Danny Tanner lived in one of the "painted ladies" homes in San Francisco with his three daughters. To help with the kids, Danny's brother moved in - along with his best buddy. Why do I bring this up? Well, last year, the house sold for $4 million. Back in 1998, a similar house in that neighborhood sold for $550k. Even back in the late 1980s, Danny Tanner would have to be more than just a local news anchor to afford that - especially with three kids. (He'd have to be the prime anchor who had been there for 30 years - not the sports guy or the morning

RIP RFK Stadium
Troy D.

So, the last bonus of the question of the night dealt with Washington DC's four major sports teams, omitting the city's MLS team. I grunt and grumble about it, but fine, whatever. But let me tell you about their MLS team - specifically, their stadium. The team is fine - but they play at RFK Stadium. It was built in 1961, and looks every single day of it. I was there earlier this month when Sporting Kansas City had their season opener, and it was an utter disaster area. The video boards are still in 4x3 standard definition on tube TVs. The paint on the seats has long faded, and the seats themselves are barely able to hold anybody up.  Concessions are almost non-existent,

I'm convinced somebody at GWD HQ in Denver is tracking my every move, because the same week I went to Montreal on vacation - we had a round on France, Canada, and Celine Dion.During my trip, I went to one of the city's observation decks, and they had displays set up where you indicate things you're interested in, and it presents you with some options for fun things you can do. I hit a few random ones, and the system gave me a list of several places to visit. The very first one on the list: Visitez la boutique érotique Priape sans rougir. Kansas City has a lot of wonderful things to talk about. We have a world-class performing arts center, a hella good soccer team, wonderful BBQ, and we're the home of Corbin Fisher movies. They help people with autism lead full lives, and you have no idea how happy I am that we were able to help them out. A Little Wang, A Little Chung
Troy D.

Tonight, we learned that y'all love it when I say the word "wang" on a microphone. Of course, when I think of wang, I think of Wang Chung. This is the band who had the 80's hit "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and... not much else. They really wanted everybody to "Wang Chung" tonight, making their name a proper noun AND a verb - although I have no idea it means "to Wang Chung". In fact, IN THE DAMN SONG, they say "can you tell me what a Wang Chung is", which means they really didn't give much thought to their band name. Their explanation: "it means whatever you want it to mean." In other words: "we don't freaking know either." SO, on to quiz - with 8 teams - and Hufflepuff

Troy D.

Tonight, we had a round on Schubert, which makes me think of Schubert Dip, which is the only album anybody knows by the band EMF, which makes me think of the song Unbelievable - which is also the only word anybody knows of that song. Wiki says that during their "heyday" from 1989 to 1997, they put out 3 albums, went "on hiatus", and reformed twice. To do what, I don't know - nobody knows them for anything other than yelling "YOU'RE UNBELIVABLE" into a microphone. And as if the song wasn't annoying enough, Kraft used it in a commercial to sell crumbly cheese - and made it even worse. Britain has put out

Fowl Trowsers - er - Trousers
Troy D.

So, in our round on fictional characters and fashion, we neglected to mention Donald Duck and his fashion choice: a sailor's top and hat and no pants. The last time I saw that outfit was at Seattle Pride, and let me just say that at the time, there were indeed plenty of seamen to go around. But, seriously, we only see passing references to Donald actually being a sailor - most of the time, he's on land playing Mickey's second banana. When does he actually sail? And - when does a sailor wear his sailor's uniform outside of, you know, sailing? It's not exactly trendy - at the very least - you'd think Daisy would tell him to put some damn pants on especially when... you know. On
