Happy Birthday Elton John
Ben

Greetings! Weather gets better, moods get better, quizzes get better. The theme of quizzes in 2017 seems to be damn close games. Another squeaker, with team Ben Likes to Refer to Himself in the Third Person taking first place by ONE point, leading regular placers Hobo Bidet in second, who led the usual champion Age of Consent by a mere TWO points. Age of Consent didn't qualify for a placement prize, but did win the final bonus round of shots for their efforts. With the change of season has come a change of menu, and the new goat cheese mac and cheese replacing the pumpkin mac was a stroke of genius. So dang good, even

Rock! Paper! Scissors! SHIT!
Ben

Howdy! Monday's quiz was a dramatic one, as Trash Pandas 4: In Space made their glorious return and barely snuck away with the one point win. Even more dramatic, was the second place tie between Napoleon Snowy Fort and Team Venture. The tie breaking rock, paper, scissor bout ended with Team Venture scissoring (ew) the $15 gift certificate away from Napoleon Snowy Fort after two rock standoff rounds. No one likes to lose that way, but Napoleon Snowy Fort have enjoyed more victories than Team Venture, so I shall shed no tears for them. I was expecting

The Peel Sessions
Ben

Greetings! Another week, another packed bar. I think quiz participants are getting more and more disciplined every week. I find myself competing with noise much less these days, which is AWESOME! Noise has always been the number one complaint I hear from people, besides not winning enough bonus questions.  Any way, we had another quiz where Age of Consent did not win, which, while it is still rare, has happened two or three times in the last month or so. For those just tuning in, that is not normal, but is largely okay with most people. It's lonely at the top.   Gotta give AoC credit though, as they "lost" by only one point, despite

Who the Hell Watches the People's Choice Awards?
Ben

Good evening quiz blog readers,   Many people expressed their displeasure with a few of tonight's rounds, namely the People's Choice Award questions and the Swedish Chef audio round. I'd have to agree with the reaction to the People's Choice Award category. I was not even aware they had happened this year.   That's no excuse for losing, though. It's certainly in the realm of pop culture. I was proud to see at least three teams completely ace the art visual round. Way to go folks!   It was a close race for the number one spot, but Trash Pandas: Kalabar's Revenge manage to ace the final

Warmer Still
Ben

Greetings once again quiz blog readers, This week saw another trainee come and go, in Chris, a soon to be alternate quiz sub. For his first time, he rocked it. Kudos Chris. While trainees being trained at my bar is nothing out of the ordinary lately, Age of Consent not taking first place was. Napoleon Boner Party edged them out for the number one spot, and actually had them beat for a good few rounds. Some weird categories tonight definitely had a hand in shaking things up, like Ellen Page movies. It's been unseasonably warm this week, and the especially populated bike rack was a testament to that fact. Even if it

Blog powers: activate. Good evening beautifuls. Here's what is not surprising: Age of Consent won. Not expected or surprising: Serenity Now took second place. Somewhat expected: Team Venture took third. Very expected: Few people are aware of the existence of Howard the Duck, and even fewer people have actually seen it. Lots of friendly newbies this quiz, and a few people who left before the quiz, promising to make it back sometime to actually participate. Something about this bar attracts nice people. I like that. Please continue coming to The Pub & The People, you nice people. Is it

The Nub & the Peep Hole
Ben

Greetings quiz blog reader people. Well the weather sure improved, but the attendance did not, surprisingly. I'll go ahead and chalk that up to the Superb Owl hangover effect. Patriots win, everyone else loses. Speaking of dominating forces doing what they do best and upsetting a lot of people, this was yet another quiz that was won out by Age of Consent. They pulled ahead in the final round, after getting 15 compared to the 12 that second place team (and dangerous newcomers) The Nub and the Peep Hole achieved, putting Age of Consent up by 2 points to win it all. Tonight also featured another trainee by the name of

F*** Bannon
Ben

Hello quizzy bloggy readers! This week saw the biggest influx of politically motivated team names during my tenure as a quiz master, by far. Most notably, was the second place team, after which this blog post is named, "F*** Bannon". I'm not sure if I can post that word without the asterisks, so I'm going to play it safe. I did ask permission from the bartenders to say it outloud, which was granted with enthusiasm. It was also appropriate that the team was made up of Planned Parenthood employees. The attendees seemed to like the name as well, constantly asking me to repeat it, acting as though they couldn't hear it the first time... or the second

I like how mild our winters tend to be, here in DC, but I often forget that, while warmer temperatures mean less snow, it also means more rain. This was another rainy quiz night, which is what I'd like to blame for the lower than normal turnout, which was still pretty solid. We also had another quiz trainee with us tonight, by the name of Eugene. Eugene is a man without a bar, as his bar shut down before the quizes started to take place there. Too bad, those quizzes would surely have pulled them out of the red. Eugene, if you're reading this, you did fantastically. Easily the most fluid trainee I've worked with. Tonight was also unique, in that Age

Can't Be Beat
Ben

Aloha folks. I'll cut the small talk and give you the bad news. Age of Consent returned this week, and doubling their 16 point round let them secure a comfortable 5 point gap between them and the returning second placers, Team Venture. At least Team Venture were able to wash away some of their tears as the winners of the round of shots super bonus round question. Hobo Bidet, who always place very well, stumbled out of a tie for first place into third, due to the tough final random knowledge round. There aren't a lot of hockey fans that quiz at The Pub & The People, it seems like. Or if there are, they only

Edge of (Twenty) Seventeen
Ben

Happy new year folks! After a week off of quizzing, 2017 kicked off properly with healthy first showing at The Pub & The People Monday tonight. With no team "Age of Consent" in sight, first place seemed wide open, but was held by team "Who Framed Mariah?" for pretty much the entire night. They also happened to win the round of bartender picked shots. The rich get richer. Second place was also pretty concretely held most of the night, by regulars "Team Venture". They trailed 8 points behind "Who Framed Mariah?", and led

Good Riddance 2016
Ben

Good Riddance 2016 The 19th was the final quiz at The Pub & The People for 2016. Our next quiz will be Monday, January 2nd at our normal time of 7:30. While 2016 is far from the worst year on record, I can safely say just about nobody will miss it. At least in 2017, David Bowie can't die again. This week's quiz was as packed as I've seen the bar. People standing everywhere. Only 15 teams, though, so a lot of team density. What wasn't different, was that those dastardly villains from team Age of Consent sent 2016 off in a fitting way, by winning 1st place yet again. That tends to happen when you score 15 points on the audio round,

Good evening quiz blog reader folks, The bar was so packed tonight, that even I had to wait around for a seat. Even the outdoor heated holiday tent area was a pretty filled out. The quiz was close at first and second, with team Taking a Tumble snatching first place with 75 points, and High on Potenuse coming in right behind them with 73 points. Both teams had the same number of points pre-joker, but Taking a Tumble used theirs more effectively, choosing to double that tricky first audio round. Third place was a tie between team Serenity Now! and team Age of Consent. Trash

Shitty Flute; Not Shitty Quiz
Ben

Hello folks! It's cold out. So cold, I thought we wouldn't have a full-ass bar, which we did have. There's occasionally a down week, but overall, the patrons seem very loyal, which I love. What I don't love, is AGE OF CONSENT WINNING YET AGAIN. But another thing I love is a close game, which this one was. 64, 63, 60, 60, 58. Those were the top five scores. Trump's New Haircut came in a very close second, and Hobo Bidet and newcomers The Exterminators tied for third, with the first holiday team name of the season spotted with Drunk Elves Off the Shelf rounding out the top five. We're

Leftovers
Ben

Good evening and happy (post) Thanksgiving!   (I spent mine on a series of planes, so I hope yours was a little more grounded and food heavy.)   Tonight was my first quiz in a couple weeks, and it went off without a hitch.   Not as full of a bar as usual, but I blame the newly very cold weather. Not a bad showing, but I've been spoiled by sardine packed bars for a while now.   Only 8 teams tonight, but team No Means No came in first place, leading our second place team, Age of Consent by 8 points, which is significant for my bar. Bringing

A "Buttload" of Fun
Brian

Well my first adventure into the big city was a success. We had 9 teams and apparently a new champion! Taking a Tumble brought home the gold this week unseating perennial champion Age of Consent. Although, Itty Bitty Ditty Committee was the bonus round ringers and hung around the middle of the pack all night, they wisely saved their joker and ended up in third. Too bad third doesn’t get a prize. Maybe next week guys! Our bottom of the barrel Barack Paper Scissors came in 9th but only because they just had to get to their concert in time and
