Beam me up, Scott
Ivan the Adequate

So turns out that famous quote by Neil Armstrong is actually, “that’s one small step for a man,” including that tiny extra syllable that threw off everyone’s guess in this week’s word count round.   Some other famous quotes that you may have misheard:   Sherlock Holmes never actually said, “Elementary, my dear Watson.” Since he’s English, it would have actually been “primary.”   Gone With The Wind also had viewers believing that the line, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” was directed toward Scarlett, when it

It goes a little something like this
Ivan the Adequate

Editors’ note: the entirety of this post was written prior to the start of this week’s quiz, and the quizmaster was not able to complete it in time for publication. Due to contractual mandate, included below is the rough draft that had been partially produced.   Wow! What a quiz! A certain number of teams packed the house for an unforgettable night of quiz-filled goodness. It was quite a nail-biter all the way to the end of this here quiz.   Things got a little crazy when <team name> insisted that <solo artist> also had recorded <his/her> own version of <song popularized by solo

How disappointing
Ivan the Adequate

So just as the blow of David Bowie and Alan Rickman’s back-to-back deaths was finally subsiding, this week’s quiz allowed us to relive the pain all over again, albeit in some of the best ways possible.   I don’t need to say much about Bowie’s musical legacy, but even throughout the past week I feel like there was a continued underappreciation of Rickman’s long and diverse film career.   And it brings me to the following declaration: if there isn’t a single movie in Rickman’s filmography that you enjoy, then you simply don’t like movies.   I mean, let’s say you don’t like

I'm not allowed to joke about Journey anymore
Ivan the Adequate

If there’s one thing I've learned this week, it’s not to mess with the sacred works of one Steve Perry and the fans that cherish them. You have to give credit where credit is due, and it’s blasphemy to attribute his genius to any other individual or group. I mean, come on, she loves to move, she loves to groove, she loves the lovin’ things. That’s gold right there.   And for my facetious claim that those immortal lyrics were popularized by a glee club from network television, I must apologize. I crossed the line, and humbly ask for everyone’s forgiveness. I will try to be better if you let me.   Homework

Season 6, Episode 1
Ivan the Adequate

Hey, so that didn’t suck. We’re off to a pretty decent start, yeah? Sure, there are a couple of cast members who have moved on to other things and there might be some storylines that we’ll never be able to properly follow up on, but we’ve still got the formula for success fully intact, right?   I mean, we’re not the critical darling that we used to be, sure, but we’re also nowhere near cancellation. We probably still have a couple of good years in us, and a pretty devoted following. People still tune in!   Okay, so our initial blueprint may have only called for a few years of storylines and now we’re in uncharted

2015: A Retrospective
Ivan the Adequate

This it, my friends. We’ve made it to the end of another year. A quick recap of what we’ve been through:   We kicked off the fifth season, Downton Abbey was spoiled for PBS viewers, MLK Day continued to go unobserved by corporate America, Ed Sheeran continued to suck, Glen from Norwich dropped by, I survived Albuquerque,

New friends and familiar sandwiches
Ivan the Adequate

So, to start things off, let’s address the cliffhanger from last week regarding that delicious meatball sandwich and whether or not it would return this week.   The conclusion to that cliffhanger is: it did return this week, and I once again enthusiastically consumed it. Dear lord, is that a delicious sandwich.   After scarfing it down, it was time for highly energetic and festive quiz that rang in this solstice the way it was meant to be rung in: with 8-bit music covers, misread poetic quotes, Hawaiian-set films, and – here’s the exciting one – a brand new recurring character in the cast of folks who have made the quiz at the

My favorite sandwich of the week
Ivan the Adequate

The week has barely begun, but I think we might have an early all-but-sure winner.   Last night’s meatball sandwich at the Blue Star was utterly divine. No less than ten handmade meatballs, marinara-covered fettuccine, and mozzarella in between a ciabatta bun.   Will it be available again as a special next week? I don’t know. How is this plug for a potentially unattainable item doing anyone any good? It’s not. Why am I wasting your time with this? Because I can, and the sandwich was just that good.   Because let me tell you, I’ve already had a few other really strong sandwiches this week – from a turkey-bacon-avocado

Hanukkah, Chanukah - It's Menorah Season!
Cap'n Brendan

There’s something about Hanukkah that always gets me excited. Even now, years and years after my parents stopped giving me gifts to mark the occasion, I always look forward to those eight nights every winter where I get to eat latkes and matzo ball soup, spin the dreidel, and light up my beer menorah. What’s that, you ask – a beer menorah? Why yes, you heard me right! The idea comes from Shmaltz Brewing, makers of He’Brew the Chosen Ale, who used to make an annual gift box centered around the concept. It came with some shtick and swag, eight varieties of their beers, and a box of Hanukkah candles. Every night you drink a beer, flip the cap, and light your candles

A flibbertigibbet?
Ivan the Adequate

So yes, I’ve seen The Sound of Music. A long time ago. Sort of.   In full disclosure, I was probably 9 years old, and it was in small chunks in a weekly music class in elementary school. So, in fact, the way Robert Wise intended for it to be seen.   And here’s the kicker: I’m fairly certain that our teacher skipped through certain parts that were seemed too dark or risqué for our innocent eyes. Was there a scene where one of the oldest daughters is sneaking off to smooch her boyfriend? That’s what it seemed like when he was fast-forwarding the video tape. And those Nazi guys? I think I remember something about

About Earl
Ivan the Adequate

At least for conversation’s sake, let’s pretend his name is Earl.   Now, we might feel compelled try to try to give Earl an imagined persona before we judge him for his behavior. We might be tempted to draw conclusions about how educated Earl is, how Earl votes, or even how Earl spends his free time.   None of that matters.   It doesn’t matter if Earl is sexist. It doesn’t matter which sports teams he roots for in which city. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t know what’s considered politically correct, or even morally correct. Because at the end of day, deep down inside Earl is an asshole,

I know what a prince and lover ought to be
Ivan the Adequate

Whenever I hear that Spin Doctors song (you know, the one), I can’t help but feel that I’m being followed.   Some months ago, it came up on a Songza station at work and I started humming along and maybe even mumbling a few of the lyrics – you know, as one does.   Not half an hour later, I find myself walking around downtown during my lunch break and I check my phone to see I have a new follower on Twitter.   It’s Chris Barron.   That’s right, the Chris Barron. Lead singer of Spin Doctors.   Now, he’s has one of those accounts he’s

Recently in Are-You-Kidding-Me
Ivan the Adequate

I’ve expressed my disdain for manufactured internet outrage in the past, but these past few days have been particularly trying, and some of it made its way into the quiz, which only served to aggravate me.   A rundown of the major “controversies” in the news: J.K. Rowling revealed that the American equivalent of the world “muggle” is “no-maj,” which some people are actually claiming sounds racist/offensive. Twitter replaced its star-based “favorite” option with a heart-shaped icon used for “liking” tweets, which made people lose their shit, but the silver lining was that it made

I've got nothin'.
Ivan the Adequate

No moral lessons reached, no facts gathered, no epiphones epiphanized. My goal is to come out of this week no better nor worse a person; just a complete net zero as far as accomplishments and personal advancement are concerned.   And it’s working so far! I retained absolutely nothing from Monday’s quiz! No factoids about B movies, no knowledge of Shakespearean locales, no promiscuous playlist additions for this year’s holiday orgy. I showed up, did my thing, and left as if nothing ever happened.   Is this what it’s like to disconnect? To just have no desire to achieve anything or leave any kind of mark on the world? Man, it

Shoot for the Famous Stars
Ivan the Adequate

There was no football (read: no Seahawks) to watch this weekend and it was actually really refreshing. Instead of having to build my Sunday around a three-hour game, I merely had to build it around the four or five TV shows I watch that air on Sunday and have convinced myself I need to view immediately so I can be part of the watercooler discussion at work the next day.   There is no watercooler at work. At best, there’s a spigot that we have no choice but to use.   Point being, it gave me ample time to ready myself for this Wednesday’s Walking Dead quiz that will be hosted

The Force's alarm clock goes off, but looks like someone is going to hit snooze
Ivan the Adequate

How is it possible that we’re still living in an age where ticker seller websites don’t plan for heavy traffic when highly-anticipated events go on sale? Last night’s debut of the new Star Wars trailer came with the bizarre marketing strategy of having the trailer air during halftime of Monday Night Football, followed by ticket sales for the movie (in theory) immediately going up online afterward.   It didn’t go smoothly.   In what was an inattentive and ultimately irresponsible movie, I spent a pretty nice chunk of the quiz constantly refreshing the site of my preferred movie theater with no success at getting through to the
