One Year Later
Ivan the Adequate

And just like that, a year has gone by since I’ve started hosting at Blue Star. It’s a bit of a cliché amongst quizmasters to say this, but this really is the best job ever. I get to drink great beer and hang out with great people and crack terrible jokes and just generally make an ass of myself on a weekly basis. And I love it.   Apart from the usual ceremonies (which were on steroids this week as 21 full teams packed the house), I decided to commemorate the occasion by giving out DVDs from my personal collection of unwanted films.   Below is the the breakdown of prizes and my descriptions of the films (some of these descriptions

Does whatever Sony says a spider can
Ivan the Adequate

My generation is now coming dangerously close to having experienced more Spider-Man actors than Popes.   So they’ve now cast a new kid to play a teenage Peter Parker/Spidey. He’ll cameo in next year’s Captain America: Civil War movie, get his own solo film in 2017, and undoubtedly make some appearances in the big Avengers two-parter happening after that.   Which is fine. I guess.   But it’s nowhere near as awesome as it would be if they skipped Peter Parker and just went straight to Miles Morales, the incredibly well-developed teenage African-American successor to the Spider-Man identity, whose

The Lesser of the Evils
Ivan the Adequate

I’m not going to pretend that Limp Bizkit isn’t a terrible band. I’m not going to defend them and say that they do the job just fine in certain situations (these situations being limited to background music while you play the original Metal Gear Solid with your friends on a PlayStation One later on a Friday night during your middle school years). I’m not going to say that the very existence of them and bands similar to them didn’t make alternative rock radio stations unlistenable for a good five years during the late 90s.   What I will say, however, is that Limp Bizkit falls into a category of bands that I happen to have a soft spot for in

It's really not that bad, folks!
Ivan the Adequate

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I’m a huge apologist when it comes to pop culture that is beloved to me, but in need of some defense following an unpopular new development that proves to be divisive. This extends to everything from the finale of Lost to the fourth season of Arrested Development to that one Blink-182 album that came out in high school that everyone else claimed wasn’t as good as their older stuff. Every time something like that happens, I’m fully prepared to chime in with a reminder the vision or restraints that might have accompanied the creators’ intents in making it. But I’ll be damned if Game of

Vegetable of the Gods
Ivan the Adequate

There has been perhaps no moment of sadistic glee that I’ve felt that has been greater than that of uttering the word “tomatoes” to quizzers this week when going over the answers for most common home-grown vegetables in the country. The uproar was colossal. The earth shook. The animals scattered. Alliances broke. Relationships ended. But in the end, the word of the National Garden Association was law. Homework from this week’s quiz: Walk The Line (the movie that Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for in Round 7). I think it’s a tremendously underrated film that didn’t even get nominated for Best

Ivan the Adequate

So former quizmaster (and more recently, former scorekeeper) Colin now works with me at my day job. Despite the fact that there is absolutely no need for us to wear suits in our office, not only does he intend to start wearing them regularly to feel slick and powerful, but we wants to drag me into it as well.

Queen Fey
Ivan the Adequate

I love Tina Fey. You love Tina Fey. Everyone else also loves Tina Fey, so it makes sense that there was a round all about her this week, in celebration of her 45th birthday (in her case, 45 is the new 35).   The one thing I hold against Tina is her pioneering the latest trend of comedians writing books that serve as either personal memoirs or a thinly-strung-together series of essays and/or short stories. She didn’t exactly invent the concept, but pretty much everyone cashed in and followed her lead after

Things Get Personal
Ivan the Adequate

We had a super-packed house this week, so I wasn’t able to take the opportunity to find out who the two quizzers that were playing under the team name Our First Tinder Date were. Throughout the quiz, their scores were concerning me, until suddenly…   They were gone!

That Crazy Frog ringtone from ten years ago is my closest association with the Beverly Hills Cop theme song, as was featured in Round 7 this week. The two reasons for it:  I've never actually seen Beverly Hills Cop. I really hated that Crazy Frog

Age of Exhaustion
Ivan the Adequate

Okay, so we’re pretty much all seeing Age of Ultron this weekend, right? Other than those among us who made it a point to go to the 7pm Thursday showings?Since 7pm the night before the opening day of a new movie has becoming the new “midnight showing,” folks nowadays are already getting reviews from friends and colleagues before they even have a chance to crack open the newspaper. Folks still open newspapers, right? And folks still use the word folks, right?Bottom line is that I love the fact that midnight showings are going away. In my mind, I could never relate to those who want their first experience with a long-awaited film to be in an over-hyped

Original programming has stopped being original
Ivan the Adequate

I’m four episodes into Daredevil and I’m not sure how quickly I’ll be finishing the season, if at all. It’s a well-made show – there’s no argument there– but the grim & grittiness of it feels really contrived in a world where every superhero now needs to be grim and gritty, and the superhero-esque nature of it doesn’t always overcome my apathy for shows about organized crime set in a version of Manhattan (and particularly Hell’s Kitchen) that is notably more dark and dangerous than its real-life counterpart. It’s only been a little over two years since the first season of House of Cards hit the scene,

I refuse to believe that Mother Mary came and spoke to Kris Allen
Ivan the Adequate

My feelings surrounding Let It Be (the album more so than the titular song) have always been complicated. While I certainly don’t think there was ever an outright bad Beatles album, the stories about how the band didn’t even really want the album released and how the label put their own finishing touches on it and pushed it out after the band’s break-up…well, it just somehow makes the whole thing seem really greedy, artificial, and unfair. Abbey Road, their famous album which was actually the last one they recorded, serves as a much grander finale to their discography. I know I’m not exactly spouting out an unpopular opinion by talking

The Final Four (points make all the difference)
Ivan the Adequate

Last night’s NCAA championship game, which played during the first half of the evening, dwarfed in comparison to the intensity and unpredictability of the quiz. Our rare Sooner or Later round format made a sudden return, reminding all the quizzers that they know far less than they thought they did about the major characters (including Link, The Doctor, and Batman) that fall into the core nerd curriculum. The cutthroat competitive nature of it all was enough to knock some of the regular teams from the standings and allow some *gasp* newcomers to take the top spot. Congrats to Mon Stars, who I’m sure we’ll be seeing again. Homework from

Terrible Mothers = Awesome Characters
Ivan the Adequate

I never realized until last night’s quiz how similar of a demeanor Betty Draper and Lucille Bluth had, with the only thing really setting them apart was the difference in comedic intent on the writers’ part. They’re self-serving, critical of others, and rare capable of presenting themselves in a sympathetic manner to both the audience and the other characters in their lives. They’re both also really great characters, when all is said and done. Speaking of which, Mad Men starts its final run of episodes in mere days and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they wrap everything up. At this point, many of the character arcs are already on the brink of

You can('t) have it all
Ivan the Adequate

So X Files is coming back for a limited run of six new episodes (yay)!  Also, the Nintendo CEO is denying now-a-month-and-a-half-old reports that Netflix is developing a live-action Zelda series (boo). You can’t win ‘em all, I suppose. Personally, I was far more excited about the latter. Yes, the recent precedent of age-old franchises (Twin Peaks, Ghostbusters, etc.) roaring back to life is great, but I’ll be damned if I wasn’t ready to cross my fingers and eagerly wait for a stellar adaptation of Ocarina of Time.  It’s not at all an unpopular opinion to say that Ocarina was my favorite Zelda game, but I’ll go on a limb here

What a thrill
Ivan the Adequate

Let’s talk about the giant turd of a movie that is Troop Beverly Films. Currently sitting at a well-deserved 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, this abortion of a motion picture is one that almost everyone who has seen it has done so while flipping through channels sometime in the last 20 years before coming across it on a basic cable channel on a Saturday afternoon. It stands out for me as one of the first movies I ever sat through (back when I was in the single digits) that made me think, “Well, that’s just shitty storytelling right there.” It opens exactly how you expect it to: the protagonist, Shelly Long’s character, is a spoiled, lazy, gold-digging
