It hasn't been the same ever since.
Ivan the Adequate

I haven’t tried any of the new Lay’s flavors that are being test-marketed right now, but I refuse to on principle. Not any principle tied to the unhealthiness of the food or the nature of the junk food conglomerate that’s putting it out. Nay, it’s all because Frito-Lay already once made the perfect potato chip…   And then took it away. Took it away from me. From us. From the world. All before it ever really had a chance to solidify its indispensability.   I’m referring to the not-quite-historic Ruffles Flavor Rush BBQ & Cheddar variety.   This was it, guys. This was everything you wanted

Binge With Me
Ivan the Adequate

To my delight, last night’s Round 7 involved identifying TV shows that are Netflix and Amazon exclusives. To my displeasure, most teams didn’t get what is arguably the best show on that entire list: Catastrophe. I’m not going to tell you what it’s about or who’s in it or why it’s great. Not that doing so would ruin it; I simply don’t feel like doing it right now, okay? Just trust me and watch the first episode. And then watch the other five. Just do it, guys.   Other highlights of last night’s quiz included:   The revelation that Jackie Chan is still somehow currently one of the highest-paid

Quiz! Recap! Here we go!   Round 1: Recently in Stuff. Donald Trump is still a thing. Dammit, America.   Round 2: Miss Dependent. Kelly Clarkson covers songs that can only be made worse through being covered by Kelly Clarkson.   Round 3: Pick a Peck. A 50/50 round on peppers, in which we learned the Carolina Reaper is the hottest one around.   Round 4: I’ll Tickle Your Ivories. Pianos have 52 white keys, and don’t you forget it.   Round 5: Party Like It’s 1999. A visual round on things that everyone old enough to attend a pub quiz at a bar should know about.   Round

Divorces are having the Best Week Ever!
Ivan the Adequate

For the better part of the past 15 years or so, MTV and VH1 have been in a seemingly back-and-forth race for who can shit out the worst possible programming, usually within the world of reality television.   While it’s been at least a good 10 years since I’ve watched more than 5 minutes of programming on either network, I do remember a time before than when VH1 kicked ass in terms of getting up-and-coming comedians to go on various talking head shows – everything from Best Week Ever to the I Love The [Decade]s that were the focuses of this week’s audio round. And these were some legit players like Nick Kroll and Doug Benson.   I

A Tale of Two Cities (one is better, but the other one's not bad either)
Ivan the Adequate

It wasn’t until just very recently that I abandoned the notion of city rivalries being something to get worked up and excited over. Once upon a time I saw Portland and/or San Francisco as being rivals to my beloved Seattle, but now, in retrospect, it seems a bit silly.   Portland, for instance, doesn’t really compete with Seattle in virtually any way outside of two damn soccer teams in what I eventually decided was far too amateurish of a soccer league to get wrapped up in. I used to go to Sounders matches frequently enough and was in full internet trash talk mode one year when I went to a playoff match against the Timbers. Thinking I was about to see two of

In praise of The Beek
Ivan the Adequate

It used to be that I didn’t really have an opinion about James Van Der Beek. To me, he was just that guy who was on that WB teen drama that was just ever so slightly before my time (or at least my spectrum of taste in genres during those days). Sure, I liked Varsity Blues, but come on - who doesn’t?   Not too long ago, however, I actually sat down and watched a few episodes of short-lived Don’t Trust the B--- in Apartment 23 and really dug it, with special praise going to Van Der Beek’s portrayal of a fictionalized version of himself. Now, people playing exaggerated versions of themselves is nothing groundbreaking (see any show

Recently in Stuff (that demonstrates our flawed priorities)
Ivan the Adequate

So apparently there has been more internet traffic today consisting of people doing searches for Minions than there has been for searches related to Pluto, which is terrifying. A mysterious distant planet that we finally get a real image of and it’s not breaking any kind of search records while some shitty Despicable Me spin-off captures the attention of Americans everywhere?   I just looked at the Twitter trending topics for Seattle and see Pretty Little Liars but no sign of Go Set a Watchman. Okay.   I know, I know. I’m thinking it too. I’m an elitist pompous asshole who thinks he's better than

Of course there's alcohol in bitters
Ivan the Adequate

I don’t know if I’ve ever felt this eager for summer to be over so soon into it. Between the brutal heat (by Northwest standards, at least) and the onslaught of critically panned summer movies (We knew Terminator would suck, but I had high hopes for Entourage!), I’m ready for that time of year where football season and new episodes of Doctor Who begin to dominate my weekends. Instead, I’m stuck with BBQs and outdoor birthday parties and all this social nonsense that I could do without.   I took the pricey plunge and invested in a portable air conditioner, which I would quickly learn is very misleadingly named, seeing as

One Year Later
Ivan the Adequate

And just like that, a year has gone by since I’ve started hosting at Blue Star. It’s a bit of a cliché amongst quizmasters to say this, but this really is the best job ever. I get to drink great beer and hang out with great people and crack terrible jokes and just generally make an ass of myself on a weekly basis. And I love it.   Apart from the usual ceremonies (which were on steroids this week as 21 full teams packed the house), I decided to commemorate the occasion by giving out DVDs from my personal collection of unwanted films.   Below is the the breakdown of prizes and my descriptions of the films (some of these descriptions

Does whatever Sony says a spider can
Ivan the Adequate

My generation is now coming dangerously close to having experienced more Spider-Man actors than Popes.   So they’ve now cast a new kid to play a teenage Peter Parker/Spidey. He’ll cameo in next year’s Captain America: Civil War movie, get his own solo film in 2017, and undoubtedly make some appearances in the big Avengers two-parter happening after that.   Which is fine. I guess.   But it’s nowhere near as awesome as it would be if they skipped Peter Parker and just went straight to Miles Morales, the incredibly well-developed teenage African-American successor to the Spider-Man identity, whose

The Lesser of the Evils
Ivan the Adequate

I’m not going to pretend that Limp Bizkit isn’t a terrible band. I’m not going to defend them and say that they do the job just fine in certain situations (these situations being limited to background music while you play the original Metal Gear Solid with your friends on a PlayStation One later on a Friday night during your middle school years). I’m not going to say that the very existence of them and bands similar to them didn’t make alternative rock radio stations unlistenable for a good five years during the late 90s.   What I will say, however, is that Limp Bizkit falls into a category of bands that I happen to have a soft spot for in

It's really not that bad, folks!
Ivan the Adequate

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I’m a huge apologist when it comes to pop culture that is beloved to me, but in need of some defense following an unpopular new development that proves to be divisive. This extends to everything from the finale of Lost to the fourth season of Arrested Development to that one Blink-182 album that came out in high school that everyone else claimed wasn’t as good as their older stuff. Every time something like that happens, I’m fully prepared to chime in with a reminder the vision or restraints that might have accompanied the creators’ intents in making it. But I’ll be damned if Game of

Vegetable of the Gods
Ivan the Adequate

There has been perhaps no moment of sadistic glee that I’ve felt that has been greater than that of uttering the word “tomatoes” to quizzers this week when going over the answers for most common home-grown vegetables in the country. The uproar was colossal. The earth shook. The animals scattered. Alliances broke. Relationships ended. But in the end, the word of the National Garden Association was law. Homework from this week’s quiz: Walk The Line (the movie that Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for in Round 7). I think it’s a tremendously underrated film that didn’t even get nominated for Best

Queen Fey
Ivan the Adequate

I love Tina Fey. You love Tina Fey. Everyone else also loves Tina Fey, so it makes sense that there was a round all about her this week, in celebration of her 45th birthday (in her case, 45 is the new 35).   The one thing I hold against Tina is her pioneering the latest trend of comedians writing books that serve as either personal memoirs or a thinly-strung-together series of essays and/or short stories. She didn’t exactly invent the concept, but pretty much everyone cashed in and followed her lead after
