Spring Break? Spring BROKE more like aha ha haaa
QM Rockjaw

It's spring break. As an Englishman, I barely know what that means. It's spring? Time for a break? I guess? Generally my perceptions about 'spring break' are informed by 'Girls Gone Wild' videos (not that I've ever watched those I mean I just know about them ahem it was in the box when I got home I was trying to rent Wild At Heart honest) but, there were no wet t-shirt contests or DJs at quiz last night. Instead we had a merry band of folk, including a few new faces to round things out and some far-flung visitors. Our usual 'left of the entrance' team swelled with some relatives from way out of town (the UK, to be precise) so became two teams - San Franquizco and

How many pluckers can a pheasant plucker pluck
QM Rockjaw

So. Tongue twisters eh? That's your game. Well, I'm onto you, team to my left. I'm on to you. After last week's tongue defeating team name, last night they returned as The Pheasant Pluckers. Aha! The double entendre tongue twister! Fine, I'm all-in, people. Come at me with your punnage, your tongue twisters, your double entendres. I shall defeat them all. For example! One Erection. Yes, that is the level of team name I had to deal with, people. But I persevere! Comey Chameleon - well, it was topical, but c'mon, you needed that extra 'Comey' to get the 80s pop band vibe going. Between The Rock and a Vin Place

Tongue twisters are evil
QM Rockjaw

As a person who regularly has to spend time speaking into a microphone in front of a crowd, I'm a little aware of the potential pitfalls. First of course there are the pronunciation traps, which I've spoken of before; as an Englishman I can't even be guaranteed to get the names of cities or states right sometimes, but I rely on my trusty quizzers to help me out. Sometimes... those quizzers turn against me. As it was last night, when I looked at the first set of answer sheets and (a) needed several rounds before I figured out how to write (and say) The Majestical McKuelys as well as (b) rolled my eyes at the tongue-twisting team

Underdogs forever
QM Rockjaw

I like underdogs. Specifically, I like rooting for underdogs. The little guy! The last to be picked! The valiant loser! Gimme a longshot any day of the week and I'll waste my money on it, cheer it on and say "Sucks to be you, big guy!" on their behalf. So, it was with great pleasure that as I came to our first standings of the evening last night, I was able to say that the brilliantly named "... and in last place" were not in last place at all. In fact they were first! And they remained that way for much of the night! Unfortunately for them, in the end as has happened so many times before, that tricksiest of tricky rounds foiled them. Only managing a 7

Herdy gerdy flerdy
QM Rockjaw

Look, it's unoriginal, it's sorta been done and hey - it's even kind of racist - but dammit I can't help it. Last night we had an audio round featuring covers of songs by the Swedish Chef (okay, fine, people pretending to be the Swedish Chef for there is only one Swedish Chef and baby, he don't get out of bed for less than a grand) and it was AWESOME. Never before have you heard such random gibberish, so delightfully spoken, or sung, or... clucked... in the case of his chicken backup singers. I'd give you links but I don't have any! Rest assured it's better than you think. With the room rocking to the finest Scandinavian singing

Topical is so last week
QM Rockjaw

Every week our valiant quizzers have to make up a team name. For some, this is easy, because they've been using their team name for a long time (Hello, Major Haters & Math Minors). For others, it's a weekly puzzle. Generally, teams go topical, and with... let's just say... recent current events... there's usually no shortage of good subjects to choose from. That said, if you wanna be topical, you gotta be quick. A few weeks ago we had a team name that referenced Mike Flynn - and he resigned half-way through the quiz. How embarrassing. Which is why, when I saw the team name Bowling Green Massacre, I had to shake my head. That was last

A new challenger emerges
QM Rockjaw

Sometimes at quiz, it's a case of "Well, you either know it or you don't". Pester any person with random trivia questions and the chances are, some people will know some answers, and some won't. However, to succeed at quiz and to succeed consistently... well, that doesn't just take random luck. Or indeed, uh, random knowledge. It takes... less random knowledge? I swear that metaphor made more sense in my head. Anyway, my point is: if you randomly walk in the door on any given quiz night it's possible you might win, because hey, the stars might align and you might know the answer to every single question. Come by again though and you might find that sometimes quiz is a little

Return of the Majors
QM Rockjaw

For months here at quiz only one team ruled: the Major Haters and Math Minors, creators (at least around our way) of the infamous 'wait until the last round and double your score' move, AKA the 'Kobayashi Maru'. I think. Anway, they went through a rough few months, losing some team members, gaining some others. Other teams came to prominence (looking at you, Alex and Max) and it seemed as though their wings may have been permanently clipped. Not so! Last night after a tumultuous evening they once again triumphed with their signature move, seeing off competition from Tom Brady Still Sucks and the topically-themed-for-Berkeley New

When ah wake up
QM Rockjaw

I'm English. I grew up in the UK, and I moved here to the US in 2009. I joke occasionally during quiz that I was brought here to provide culture to the masses, although of course, that's not true. It's culture and manners. Still, being an English lad and of a certain 40-ish vintage, my pop culture experiences are pretty specific. I like a lot of music from the 70s and 80s, with a bit of early 90s too - but this century? With a few exceptions, not as much. All that means is, sometimes I get worried that (a) my music picks at quiz might be a bit English-centric ("This wasn't a hit here?") and (b) I'm hopelessly outdated. The latter I don't care that much about, frankly,

Let's talk 'bout Alternative Facts
QM Rockjaw

No, not our new administration's playful euphemism for flat-out lies. Instead our intrepid teams, no less than four who chose a team name last night based on this Orwellian interpretation of reality. Try as I might, I cannot utter an alternative fact so believe me when I say that this full third of our quizzing contingent represented a wonderful cross-section of our attendees. We had #AlternativeFarts, which is a hashtag for the ages and also something I want to ponder for a bit (the alternative to farts is...?), who took up the rear of the table after a tightly-fought contest with once-great team Garbage In, Garbage Out. Then there was The

My increasingly walled off existence
QM Rockjaw

So, I arrive at Spats last night to discover there is some sort of... framework... being constructed around the door I use to enter. Apparently, something to do with curtains. Drapes. Same thing? This combined with the ramp that was built directly in front of me means in a few weeks time I shall be able to conduct the quiz from inside a small box next to the front door. I'm considering investing in a large, mechanical head that will breath fire, belch smoke and also, as a bonus, convey questions while I turn the knobs and spin the wheels behind the curtain. Pay no attention to the man there. We had some special guests and some new quizzers last night, who made the foolish mistake

Welcome back, Spats!
QM Rockjaw

2017 has come roaring in the front door and Spats is here to welcome it with open arms and sharp pencils. Our first official quiz of the New Year saw me perched in my new Fortress of Solitude, AKA the space next to the newly installed ramp that leads to the bar. No more people tripping awkwardly in front of me as they head to the bar! It's a new dawn in bar locomotion. We had a healthy turnout last night with new and old faces, which I love to see. Newcomers like The Gizznards, who due to some beautiful but hard to read handwriting, managed to make me think they were called the 'Fizznards' or the 'Quiznards' for at least two rounds. Turns out the truth was even more...

Goodbye, 2016
QM Rockjaw

I didn't ever intend to be a quizmaster. I mean, who does? It's not exactly a job people aspire to. I don't think. (If it is, and you're reading this, I have good news for you; we're hiring.) So when my wife suggested I apply to Geeks Who Drink, I thought - why not? Can't hurt, and all that. I've done presentations before, panels to hundreds of strangers. I've stood up and run my slides and muddled through. While I always have a script at quiz, there's plenty of times I have to improvise. Every time I do, I have to face down a guy inside me who's frightened to just do the thing. So without expecting to, in 2016 I spent a lot of time standing in front of strangers asking them

It's cold indeed
QM Rockjaw

Like so many other weather conditions these days (it's called climate change kids) when the weather turns, it turns pretty fast. And even though here in NorCal what we call 'cold' would be called 't-shirt weather' to hardy NorWesters, well, what can I say, the sun coddles us all for most of the year. So, sitting as I was next to an open door that let in one helluva draft, I didn't need a team named Fuck It's Cold to remind me of that fact. Remind me they did, however, with their team name and also their continued presence at the top of the scoring table as our early rounds progressed. The Team I Shall Call Alex & Max (except when one isn't here, like last

The nights are getting colder, so as the winds whip around the nethers of our quizzers we welcome them inside Spats with a hearty HELLO and a cordial HOW D'YOU DO. Come, warm your nethers by our fake fire, and warm your cockles with some booze. Last night's quiz was fairly hotly contested, with returning champs morphed into their new form Secretary of Defense: Mojo Jojo starting off strong. From the off however they were challenged by newcomers Juvenile Intentions who posted a near perfect round 2 to bring themselves into the early lead. Further down the table we saw the return of some old favorites with Major Haters &

Best butts roasting
QM Rockjaw

Christmas is here! Well not here, exactly. It's a while away yet. But not that far! Close enough that we can smell it. Or in my case, feel it. Literally. Because a Christmas tree - one of two - had invaded Spats last night, creeping up on me like a giant electrical creeper, if they were trees. Despite my butt warming up to the very close lightbulbs, we had a quiz to get done. Slowly but surely Christmas theming is infiltrating our questions, with a very tricky round 3 involving well-covered Christmas tunes flummoxing almost everyone. Not so much for returning quizzers Rigadoon, however, who sailed through that round and proceeded to stay just ahead of their competition
