Why Was It Okay to Play Ginuwine's "Pony" at Every Homecoming Dance?
Stephanie P

First, a PSA: Recess will be closed Monday 3/27 and Monday 4/3 for renovations. No quiz those days, but we'll be back in business with the quizillackin' Monday 4/10. Don't go gettin' dumb on me in the meantime! Monday evening was a cozy lil get together with a fabulous bunch of quiznerds. Together we learned things about Irish people (who sadly do have a tradition of bestowing foreign heads of state enormous bowls of cabbage), sexy popes, and good ol' Igor Stravinsky. We also learned an important lesson about incest and the Peanuts cartoon.A big ol hooty-hoo to our first place team Laser Cats and our second place team Rocky Mountain Super Chicks.

Antibiotics Can't Remove Your Vestigial Tail
Stephanie P

There's an enormous inflatable Jameson bottle on the Recess, which can only mean St. Patrick's Day is afoot! That or the aliens have landed, and they're all really tall drunks. Didn't see any over-tall aliens at quiz Monday night, though I did see some real smart asses. We had a great crowd of know-it-alls, and I was proud to lead them on a brain-stretching adventure for the evening. We showed off some serious grey matter, and we learned a few things too, like: Creed and Cream are not the same band. The Wolf of Wall Street had no wolves. Don't go to Denny's for Chinese food. Important life lessons, these.Congratulations to our 1st place team Bruce Willis

Vietnam War Movie or Dave Matthews Band Song or Kind of the Same Thing
Stephanie P

Oh what a wonderful feeling to be amongst you friendly quiznerds on a Monday night! It was kinda chilly out, and the internet had only just turned back on for much of Denver, and yet you still had the fortitude to gather at Recess to flex your brain wrinkles. The bar even bought you all shots of Jameson--THAT'S how cool the Monday night quiz crowd is at Recess. You are heroes, every one of you. You're heroes who know a lot about random stuff, it turns out. Some of you can even understand Jeff Goldblum when he's rambling about butterflies or whatever. Not all of you can identify a Sugarhill Gang track, I'm afraid, but that's okay. We're learning together.Major congratulations

Tin Soldiers and Nixon's Coming
Stephanie P

Most people only know my alma mater because of the kids who got shot there in 1970. I get it, we're a smallish state school in the Midwest with a spotty sports record. There's a pretty great poetry program and an excellent journalism school, but I can understand how one might focus on the statue *outside* the old journalism building that still has a National Guard bullet hole in it. It's okay, I'm always excited whenever ol "Can't Read Can't Write Can't Win Kent State" shows up in quiz. Some people's colleges never get mentioned, so me and my black squirrels will take what we can get. It's better than trying to explain what a Golden Flash is.My personal collegiate pride aside,

I Have Been Known to Do the Stanky Leg on Purpose
Stephanie P

Monday night I achieved a quizmaster milestone: I lost my voice thanks to the quiz. It's nice to finally level up, though I do look forward to getting my voice back soon. Until then, I'll be communicating in coughs and rudimentary sign language. Hooray! We had a packed house Monday evening, perhaps thanks to the magical confluence of the President's Day holiday and the ridiculously lovely weather we've been enjoying. It got a little noisy, but you beautiful teams did a fine job keeping up. Some of you even managed to understand the whispered last words of Round 7, which is pretty incredible. Dying people need to speak up, amiright?Round 5 this week was dedicated to forever-teenager

There Are Other Coen Brothers Movies Besides The Big Lebowski
Stephanie P

Another fantastic night of quizzing at the ol' Recess playground, and this time we had a sweet new shuffleboard table! Man do I love shuffleboard. (Yes, I have the soul of an 87 year-old.) This fine new game moved in on my usual quizmaster turf at the front of the bar, so we moved the rig to the middle of the bar. Now, with the speaker squarely blasting all ends of the Recess establishment, the whole dang place can hear the madness that springs from my maw! Lucky lucky quizzers!Monday night had us learning some interesting things about our world, each other, and--dare I say it--ourselves. <3 We learned

It's All In How You Say Something.
Sarah

Team names. One of my favorite parts of being a Quizmaster is reading the names teams come up with. Sometimes they are super witty, sometimes they are super odd, sometimes they are super perverted and sometimes...well...I just don't get it until I say it aloud. Tonight for example, whenever I read the name What Do Falcon's Do? into the mic, the team would then do a call-and-response cheering on their favorite team and yell "rise up" or something to that effect. Fun. Hahaha. But the name I didn't get until I read through the scores - William Shatnerface. At first I thought they were making fun of Star Trek or just didn't know how to spell - nope. Read it aloud.

Elements of Style Is My Jam, Son
Stephanie P

Monday night's quiz included so many things I love, including grammar. Let's get it out of the way--I am a grammar nerd. I was the only kid in 4th grade to look forward to the grammar unit, and it made me really popular, let me tell you. So I was filled with unfettered glee at our quiz questions on The Elements of Style, that slim volume of grammatical brilliance, AND the Oxford comma, about which I have very strong feelings. It doesn't take much to piss off a grammar nerd, but apparently it also doesn't take much to delight one.Other great things about Monday night's quiz include: so many rockin' James Brown-inspired tracks in round 2, White Castle being referred to as

We're Baaaaack!
Stephanie P

Quiz at Recess is officially back on! And man it's good to be back home at the ol playground. We had a pretty intimate crowd Monday night (the snow and the holiday might've had something to do with it), which turned out to be a good thing because my fancy new microphone decided it had better things to do than amplify my voice, and our beautiful quizzers got to listen to my "projecting voice" instead. And that's okay! Y'all are a beautiful bunch of quiznerds, and it was a lot of fun playing the quiz with a smaller crowd. We had awfully smart teams Monday night--they really knew the differences between their butts and their brains, and most of them can spot a glass eye a mile away.

I Stand Corrected on the Merkin
Sarah

Quizzers are gross and odd people by nature. A pub quiz makes sense as an outlet for these types of people to let their freak flag fly. I thought I knew everything, but I was taught something new tonight. A team - Small Hands, Big Merkin took no time in correcting me in my pronunciation of their name. With election season upon us, I assumed (incorrectly) that by "merkin" they meant a derivative of "American." No, friends, that is NOT what they meant. They meant "merkin" as in a small toupee a man might wear in their nether regions that is crafted of someone else's pubic hair. What. The. Fuck. ??!!! When something has a name that is known, it is common enough that

My Patronus Is Garfield
Stephanie P

Sucks to have Garfield for a patronus--I wave my wand, say the magic words, and out plops a hazy Garfield spectre. Rather than battle some Dementors like I've asked him to, my Garfield patronus waddles into the kitchen to check the fridge. I waggle my wand some more and say some encouraging magical nonsense, which usually makes him roll his eyes and head for his favorite nap spot under the couch. My patronus is a jerk. When I arrived at Recess Tuesday night the indoor bar was totally empty of patrons. I know Recess' patio is awesome, but I've never seen the inside this barren--we're talkin crickets and tumbleweeds, and crickets riding around inside tumbleweeds because there's no

Old People Say the Darndest Things
Stephanie P

I'm a big fan of things old people usually like--big band music, Bob Hope/Bing Crosby "Road" movies, saying "ha-cha-cha," white tube socks, those sugar-free rectangular wafer cookies, the list goes on. So as you might imagine, the crotchety old man musings of Abe "Grandpa" Simpson and Andy Rooney in round 3 really spoke to my soul. Kids these days with their facepages and tweetbooks, they don't know about real life! Heck some of 'em don't even know that the capital of Australia is Canberra, not Sydney! Back in my day, we knew Beowulf's troll-esque nemesis was Grendel--we even read the poem in the original Old English, up hill both ways, in the snow. Back in my day we knew all about Treasure

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Stephanie P

A lot can change in 2 weeks. Since I was last at my beloved Recess quiz (gone for a day-job-related-travel and Labor Day double whammy), Georgetown University apologized for its role in slavery, Donald Trump visited Mexico, Hillary Clinton caught pneumonia and Florida caught another hurricane. Also! We switched the quiz to Tuesday! My sincere apologies for any confusion caused by this switcheroo. You beautiful quiznerds mean the world to me--not everyone is willing to listen to me blather on for 2 hours the way you all do. I know the beer and promise of prizes help, but still, you're my special smartypants snowflakes. In addition to having quiz on a new day this week, we also had

Fond Thoughts
Sarah

Once again I had the pleasure of being a substitute Quizmaster for this fine establishment and tonight was a night of constant reminders of things I think fondly about. For starters, the bonus beer of the eve was Genesee which was the drink of choice of both of my late grandparents. Brewed in the Genesee River by Rochester NY, this beer was a staple at family gatherings. Next a familiar team walked in, The 7-11 Truthers who are a rad family that quizzes together at my usual venue. Finally, when the team names came in there was a nod to the late Gene Wilder (everybody's favorite chocolatier) from Pure Imagination.

I Left the Forest to Bring You a Quiz
Stephanie P

I spent a long weekend relaxing next to a burbling river, watching a chipmunk stock his hidey-hole and eating fake sausages from a campfire. I numbed my toes in the icy mountain water and stomped through swampy high grass. The only thing that could drag me from peaceful idyll? All you marvelous quiznerds, of course! Heck, I even showered.Back in quizivilation, we started Monday off with some current events. Boy was I proud to see my hometown Cincinnati show up in the round 1 bonus question. The bus system really is crappy enough to make you steal an ambulance. We also learned that Pete's Dragon might just be worth seeing--who knew?Round 4's wordplay made the round slightly

Analogy Time!
Stephanie P

Standardized tests suck big time (there are studies, it's a science fact!), but I'd argue their one saving grace is analogies. Man those are fun. We had two analogy-themed questions Monday night, and man I don't know about you guys but I could've kept going. Here's one for ya: "Beyond the Axis of Evil" is to "crappy sequel movie" as "Fleshlight" is to:a) a retired Crayola colorb) handsy Uncle Jimc) FloridaThe answer is a) but if you've got a good argument for b) or c) I'll hear ya out. Grey areas are fun too! Hooray for the humanities! There aren't too many grey areas in the pub quiz though, I'm afraid. In round 3 we had other colored areas, like the
