$500 raised for doggies!
Micah

A super-lovely Quiz for a Cause this week at Recess Beer Garden. We had 18 teams, 2 service dogs present, and $500 was raised for Freedom Service Dogs! Nadine and Megan were quite nice, helpful, got on the mic, handed out stuff, collected money, etc. Megan had actually repped at the QFAC at another venue and for another organization that I did a year or so ago. She has so many causes! As the ladies mentioned, it takes $30,000 to train a service dog, so every bit counts! In the end, North Korean Nether Nuzzlers finished just out of the money in third; Do We Get the Dog If We Win? didn't

First, a PSA: Next week at Recess we're doing a Quiz for a Cause to benefit Freedom Service Dogs. Please come out to support this wonderful organization! They're asking for a $10 donation per person, and proceeds go to keep those puppies happy, healthy and well trained, so they can go on to help improve the lives of their owners with disabilities. Hope you can join us!Monday afternoon dear ol Denver got pelted with a rain of hail balls. The ones hitting my neighborhood were the size of marshmallows (the hot chocolate ones, not the huge campfire ones), and I hear other parts of town had hail the size of golf balls. So

Don't get me started on David Letterman!
Micah

Oh, boy, do I love David Letterman. I shared this with the crowd at Recess Beer Garden during this week's Geeks Who Drink pub quiz, but boy howdy, am I a fan. I saw Letterman live 20 times before he retired on May 20, 2015. That is NOT a typo. TWENTY! I saw him for the 19th time on May 11, 2015, then I got a call to see him for the 20th time the next day, May 12, 2015! I'm super-glad I squeezed in a twentieth trip. It would've sucked if I had to say "I saw Letterman 19 times" for the rest of my life. Sounds like I'm just a slacker. Get to twenty, man! Anyway, big fan. Made my night to start off our quiz with a question about Letterman. Fun fact (no one

Jeremiah Was a BullFrog But He Wasn't the Title of That Song
Stephanie P

I work from home during the day, and today during a call with a coworker I half-witnessed a pretty solid car crash outside my window. Accidents happen pretty regularly here, as I live at the corner of a busy one-way street and a regular street, and it isn't always easy to see the oncoming one-way traffic. Or at least that's probably what happened to the Uber driver who smashed into another car this morning. The screeching tires and smashing metal were loud enough for my coworker to hear over the phone, and as I startle easily I may have shouted "Holy Canoli!" in her ear when the collision happened. Thankfully it looked like both drivers were unharmed, and the fire truck left almost as soon

It's patio weather here in Denver, and the Recess beer garden was full of happy Denverinos enjoying the fine weather (it could still snow at any moment so we'll take it while we can!). The windows were open in the bar, so those of us gathered for another wacky evening of pub quiz were also enjoying the temperate evening air.My congratulations and apologies to everyone who endured that terrible round of karaoke tunes. I know at least one guy enjoyed the particularly painful rendition of "Turn Down For What," so maybe bad karaoke is an aural delicacy to some--like White Castle or goetta, but in your ear holes. We learned a very important lesson about Puritans Monday night--they

Get Off the Phone, Dad! I Need to Send an Email

Monday night we loaded up the ol Quizmobile and took a trip to the land of Early Internet, where AOL CDs are used as currency and instead of hello they say "A/S/L." I know some in our tour group freaked out a little when they discovered their phones didn't work in this place, and that's okay, visiting foreign lands can be scary sometimes. But everyone perked up when we got to meet one of Early Internet's most famous residents: Jesus on a Pogo Stick. (Please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers this ridiculous old meme...!)We also played some quiz Monday night, and y'all brainiacs brought some real knowledge to the game. Most teams killed it on the visual round, and I think

First, a PSA: Recess will be closed Monday 3/27 and Monday 4/3 for renovations. No quiz those days, but we'll be back in business with the quizillackin' Monday 4/10. Don't go gettin' dumb on me in the meantime! Monday evening was a cozy lil get together with a fabulous bunch of quiznerds. Together we learned things about Irish people (who sadly do have a tradition of bestowing foreign heads of state enormous bowls of cabbage), sexy popes, and good ol' Igor Stravinsky. We also learned an important lesson about incest and the Peanuts cartoon.A big ol hooty-hoo to our first place team Laser Cats and our second place team Rocky Mountain Super Chicks.

There's an enormous inflatable Jameson bottle on the Recess, which can only mean St. Patrick's Day is afoot! That or the aliens have landed, and they're all really tall drunks. Didn't see any over-tall aliens at quiz Monday night, though I did see some real smart asses. We had a great crowd of know-it-alls, and I was proud to lead them on a brain-stretching adventure for the evening. We showed off some serious grey matter, and we learned a few things too, like: Creed and Cream are not the same band. The Wolf of Wall Street had no wolves. Don't go to Denny's for Chinese food. Important life lessons, these.Congratulations to our 1st place team Bruce Willis

Oh what a wonderful feeling to be amongst you friendly quiznerds on a Monday night! It was kinda chilly out, and the internet had only just turned back on for much of Denver, and yet you still had the fortitude to gather at Recess to flex your brain wrinkles. The bar even bought you all shots of Jameson--THAT'S how cool the Monday night quiz crowd is at Recess. You are heroes, every one of you. You're heroes who know a lot about random stuff, it turns out. Some of you can even understand Jeff Goldblum when he's rambling about butterflies or whatever. Not all of you can identify a Sugarhill Gang track, I'm afraid, but that's okay. We're learning together.Major congratulations

Tin Soldiers and Nixon's Coming
Stephanie P

Most people only know my alma mater because of the kids who got shot there in 1970. I get it, we're a smallish state school in the Midwest with a spotty sports record. There's a pretty great poetry program and an excellent journalism school, but I can understand how one might focus on the statue *outside* the old journalism building that still has a National Guard bullet hole in it. It's okay, I'm always excited whenever ol "Can't Read Can't Write Can't Win Kent State" shows up in quiz. Some people's colleges never get mentioned, so me and my black squirrels will take what we can get. It's better than trying to explain what a Golden Flash is.My personal collegiate pride aside,

I Have Been Known to Do the Stanky Leg on Purpose
Stephanie P

Monday night I achieved a quizmaster milestone: I lost my voice thanks to the quiz. It's nice to finally level up, though I do look forward to getting my voice back soon. Until then, I'll be communicating in coughs and rudimentary sign language. Hooray! We had a packed house Monday evening, perhaps thanks to the magical confluence of the President's Day holiday and the ridiculously lovely weather we've been enjoying. It got a little noisy, but you beautiful teams did a fine job keeping up. Some of you even managed to understand the whispered last words of Round 7, which is pretty incredible. There Are Other Coen Brothers Movies Besides The Big Lebowski
Stephanie P

Another fantastic night of quizzing at the ol' Recess playground, and this time we had a sweet new shuffleboard table! Man do I love shuffleboard. (Yes, I have the soul of an 87 year-old.) This fine new game moved in on my usual quizmaster turf at the front of the bar, so we moved the rig to the middle of the bar. Now, with the speaker squarely blasting all ends of the Recess establishment, the whole dang place can hear the madness that springs from my maw! Lucky lucky quizzers!Monday night had us learning some interesting things about our world, each other, and--dare I say it--ourselves. <3 We learned

It's All In How You Say Something.
Sarah

Team names. One of my favorite parts of being a Quizmaster is reading the names teams come up with. Sometimes they are super witty, sometimes they are super odd, sometimes they are super perverted and sometimes...well...I just don't get it until I say it aloud. Tonight for example, whenever I read the name What Do Falcon's Do? into the mic, the team would then do a call-and-response cheering on their favorite team and yell "rise up" or something to that effect. Fun. Hahaha. But the name I didn't get until I read through the scores - William Shatnerface. At first I thought they were making fun of Star Trek or just didn't know how to spell - nope. Read it aloud.

Elements of Style Is My Jam, Son
Stephanie P

Monday night's quiz included so many things I love, including grammar. Let's get it out of the way--I am a grammar nerd. I was the only kid in 4th grade to look forward to the grammar unit, and it made me really popular, let me tell you. So I was filled with unfettered glee at our quiz questions on The Elements of Style, that slim volume of grammatical brilliance, AND the Oxford comma, about which I have very strong feelings. It doesn't take much to piss off a grammar nerd, but apparently it also doesn't take much to delight one.Other great things about Monday night's quiz include: so many rockin' James Brown-inspired tracks in round 2, White Castle being referred to as

We're Baaaaack!
Stephanie P

Quiz at Recess is officially back on! And man it's good to be back home at the ol playground. We had a pretty intimate crowd Monday night (the snow and the holiday might've had something to do with it), which turned out to be a good thing because my fancy new microphone decided it had better things to do than amplify my voice, and our beautiful quizzers got to listen to my "projecting voice" instead. And that's okay! Y'all are a beautiful bunch of quiznerds, and it was a lot of fun playing the quiz with a smaller crowd. We had awfully smart teams Monday night--they really knew the differences between their butts and their brains, and most of them can spot a glass eye a mile away.

I Stand Corrected on the Merkin
Sarah

Quizzers are gross and odd people by nature. A pub quiz makes sense as an outlet for these types of people to let their freak flag fly. I thought I knew everything, but I was taught something new tonight. A team - Small Hands, Big Merkin took no time in correcting me in my pronunciation of their name. With election season upon us, I assumed (incorrectly) that by "merkin" they meant a derivative of "American." No, friends, that is NOT what they meant. They meant "merkin" as in a small toupee a man might wear in their nether regions that is crafted of someone else's pubic hair. What. The. Fuck. ??!!! When something has a name that is known, it is common enough that
