After the sheer insanity of last week’s quiz, this week was downright relaxing. With eleven teams this week -  and room to breathe - it seemed almost like a holiday. I felt like I should wear myy flip-flops and channel my inner Jimmy Buffet. Cha-ching.

No birthday songs this week (though our geeky bar group did lend some extra applause and shouting at one point to match the din coming from the dining area), no need for stall tactics to tally scores…just easy-going fun.  A joy on hump day.

This time, we treated Beer & Loathing in Potsdam to a $50 gift certificate in exchange for their 80-point, first-place effort, and awarded $25 to Hans YOLO. Dan  from Veloci-rappers was the Email Bonus Prize winner. I bet he was super-psyched when he saw that Birth Control Gum was all his. (Use it well, my friend.)

Scores in the first half of quiz were, overall, “above-average” to “kick-butt.” Not quite as impressive in the second part of the quiz (as a whole, I’m saying), but not bad either. I wonder what next week will bring?

The time will come soon enough…Pub Quiz is ON for next Wednesday night at 7!

Hats off to all y’all this week…record-breaking numbers for Potsdam! Nicely done, Quiz Friends. Best of all, despite the big numbers, people were patient, enthusiastic, and smiley. Quizmaster Tom and I – and the Cactus Crew – admire your eagerness to be a part of our Wednesday night circus, and appreciate your great attitude. You rock!

A tell-tale sign of how the night will lean comes when we offer answers half-way through the Quiz. By that point, people are mostly fed, they are pleasantly liquored up, and they are feeling comfortable enough to let loose a little. It can be either lead to great audience participation, or straight-up belligerence by one or more participants. This week, it was all good. It’s great to look out at everyone as they offer cheers and groans  and sing along with the audio answers.

On the topic of quality participation…we had some great participation on quiz answer sheets as well. The most consistently fabulous answers came from Hell If I Know!.  If addition to using their own team name as an answer, the partners also gave answers such as, “I have to pee” and “Christ, pick one we know!” Sure, they could have just left blanks, but smart answers are so much better. Gold stars to them.

Gold stars to Bartender Mindy and the Cactus Crew, too. Gracious! Can you say hustle?! Good work, kids.

Kudos to our winners tonight – first-place Champion River Gazers (CRG), second-place Partially Krossed Out, and email bonus prize winner Abby of the CRG.

Once last thought to conclude… A few hours before entering the Cactus doors this week,  I reflected about the early days of the Quiz, back in 2010…and how we were jazzed to eventually get 40 people. We consistently outpace that now, and this week we had more than double that initial target. Huh. The Potsdam Quiz has come a long way, baby.

Thanks to all who have been a part this amazing adventure… We’re looking forward to seeing all your bright, shining faces when we do it all again next Wednesday night at 7!

We opened our series of May quizzes this week with birthday celebrations s all over the place – one each for Tom’s Sandals, The Happy Birthday Andreas, and Mexicali-“Hose”…plus, Manager Robby gets to celebrate his birthday just hours after our Wednesday quiz finishes. Happy Birthday, all!

This time, Quiz saw just a few of our stalwart regular teams compete…and a number of newer teams join in the fun. Total number of teams was about the same as usual – 14 – but the score differential was much greater than usual. All that Greater-Potsdam Area river viewing had the Competitive River Gazers in the right frame of mind for Quiz domination, and Hans YOLO called upon their own Force to lock down 2nd place.  Meanwhile, bonus pints (yes, pints, not points) were distributed amongst a number of other teams, and Cassi, You Look Tired captured the Email Bonus Prize – a fabulous dash-mountable Hula Girl.  

Speaking of mountable…Those who were at Quiz may recall Round 6 (about butts and sex), which forced me to fight off the urge to blush and burst into fits of giggles.  The question about what lubricant for Brando in "Last Tango in Paris" yielded the widest variety of answers of any question on this week’s Quiz. And while I can’t get behind everything about Round 6, I can support far-flung answers, because they entertain me at the scorer’s table. Seeing teams’ answers of saliva, hand lotion, Vaseline, Mayonnaise, Crisco, olive oil, chocolate syrup, and James Howden - all for the same question - was fab. So many answer choices…and none of them correct. In case you are wondering, the answer has no carbs, but lots of saturated fat and ‘butt’ as part of its’ name. Oh, butter!

This month will get crazy for a lot of people with tests, grading, graduation, and so on, but the Quiz will continue on as the regular mid-week beacon of team fun that you’ve come to rely on. Plan to play – next Wednesday night at 7.
