Patrick (Packrit)

I'm just your average board game nerd who hosts pub quizzes as a side hustle. By day I'm allegedly an educator. By night I'm allegedly a tramp.

In a city that doesn't deal well with the lightest amount of moisture falling from the sky, I think we have the most spectacular quizzers in all of Austin. You didn't let a piddly little monsoon (like, ferreal) stop you from getting your quiz on.

One lesson I learned tonight is that I need to give Kelly Kelly a microphone. She is funny funny. She's also a pasta that is usually stuffed.

We also took a moment of silence to wish Josh well in California. As of the posting of this blog, he has made it and is headed to Disneyland. Because that's how a cross-country trek is done.

Thank you all for being so welcoming last night. I'm beyond excited to be your new Quizmaster and I hope I can do your quiz justice. I have big shoes to fill.

Until next week, stay safe, happy, and drunk. But not too drunk; I can't afford to bail you out. Don't be tardy for the party!

Josh Wittge is an animatronic talking bear which was created by Ken Forsse with later assistance by Larry Larsen and John Davies. Josh Wittge moves his mouth and eyes via a standard cassette tape deck built into his back. Later versions would use a digital cartridge in place of a cassette. At the peak of his popularity, Josh Wittge became the best-selling toy of 1985 and 1986, and the newest version was awarded the 2006 Animated Interactive Plush Toy of the Year by Creative Child Magazine.

Josh enjoys table tennis, lunch and Crimean War renactment. He lives.

Last night was my final quiz in Austin, and I have so many feelings about it I'm not even sure how to write this blog. Ultimately, the show was amazing. The guest QMs were on point, the crowd was amazing, and the queens were nothing short of fucking phenomenal.

By no means was last night's show a regular quiz. Shit, it wasn't even a regular special event. It was truly a celebration of me, and while that sounds entirely egotistical, I didn't necessarily intend for that to be as true as it turned out to be. The important take away from this is that it really was a super special, non-standard event that happened thanks to the generosity and kind permission of both Opal Divine's and Geeks Who Drink.

QMs Patrick and Samantha helped me put together a quiz full of shit I was interested in... a quiz that I would ace. I was mildly afraid that would mean a tough road for most of you guys, but the scores proved different. Throughout the night we had a whopping 42 teams cheering and jeering along with the quiz. If you scored low, well... it's probably best that we don't date because we likely have nothing in common.

I myself got a little overzealous with wanting to put on a song and dance for you. I love singing live, but being outdoors in that corset? Bad idea. Should have lip synced the whole night. But I'm hyper critical of myself and you all loved the show, so I could ask for more than that. About once a month I gush about how lucky I am to have scads of people come out to a bar every Saturday for me to yell at them. I truly, truly mean that. I was overwhelmed by the turn out, and even more overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and participation of the crowd. I'm seriously spoiled by you all, and could not ask for a better quiz set-up than I've had at Opal Divine's these last two or so years.

Thank you so very much to Ron, Chelsea, John, Evan, Dav, Becca, Shayne, Patrick, Samantha, and Stephanie for volunteering your time to help make this night special. Thanks to my tireless scorekeeper Kelly for her hard work and hilarity these few years, and for the AMAZING finale song. I'll get a video up later when I can but it suffices to say that I was humbled, floored, and highly amused. Thanks ESPECIALLY to the lovely and talented Kara Foxx-Paris and Althea Trix for turning out an amazing drag show throughout the evening. These ladies killed it, and I hope you all go out of your way to patronize them in future.

Oh! And thanks to your generous tips to these queens, we raised a whopping $535 for the Red Cross to help out with the recovery efforts for those dealing witht he fallout of the plant explosion in West. I truly have the best quizzers in Austin.

Thanks to Michael Parker, Marty, and Matt for their willingness to deal with and dedication to this event. It absolutely would not have happened if Opal's didn't trust me as much as they do, and I doubt I'll ever find a bar as gung-ho about shit like this as Opal Divine's. Amazing.

I'm not sure what else there is to say except a final thank you to John Dicker and everyone at Geeks Who Drink. I'm not leaving the company, just the state. But I have a really cool life that I can count this job as something that pays me to do what I love - yell at people for two hours while drinking my face off.

Thanks so much you guys. It seems trite, but I absolutely will miss spending my Saturday nights with you all.

Cut, print... moving on.

Full disclosure: I've never seen more than a handful of episodes of The Sopranos, and only parts of the Godfather movies. I have seen Goodfellas - mostly in pieces - because it always seemed to be playing in the breakroom when I worked at Gap.

But for whatever lack of knowledge - and thus potential additional enthusiasm - I was dealing with, you guys certainly made up for it. Questions came up that seemed like standard questions to me that elicited cheers, jeers, and hoots from various participating players. That's the sort of enthusiasm I love to see at a theme quiz. Wave your geek flag high, even if it is stained with blood and pasta sauce.

I was also applauded for my cunning use of hilariously stereotypical music in tonight's playlist. I really couldn't help myself. If only Opal's sold pasta dishes, right?

Our first place team went home with a considerable increase on their investment, and I'm pretty sure everyone had fun. Don't forget to come back next weekend for Get Smashed! It's a donation based game, but if you pay in you're eligible for the cash prizes! For more info, visit the Facebook event. Hope to see you guys there!
