Julio (Jean-Luc)

If there is one thing you must know about Jean-Luc (or "Julio" for those of you feeling saucy) it is that he loves scotch sours. Doesn't matter what kind of scotch goes into the sour, be it well scotch, Glenlivet, or Laphroaig. Because when he drinks it neat, he only drinks Talisker 18 year. Why is he telling you this? So you can buy him a scotch sour. He has no shame. But know this. Your buying him a scotch won't get you any free points for the night. But it will help him remember your name the following morning.

Originally a native from Los Angeles (Go Dodgers!), Jean-Luc has been living in Tucson close to four years. Love, not a desire to drive down property values, brought him here. And when he's not complaining about the heat, he's complaining about the cold. But he doesn't complain often, except when Ned Colletti makes a horrible trade or a questionable signing. Yes, he enjoys baseball. But he loathes the San Francisco Giants. More than he does gin and tonics.

This is the part of the bio where he lists favorites - favorite films, favorite musical artists, favorite books. After you gloss over the list, somehow you are supposed to know more about him than you did before. Though he doubts that. If you really want to get to know your quizmaster, just approach him. Talk to him. He's the one behind the microphone, mispronouncing words and making awful jokes that fall flat. He doesn't bite. Unless you want him to.

As promised, his favorites (which constantly change)!

Books:

  • Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
  • The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  • The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein
  • 20 Poemas de Amor y Una Cancion Desesperada by Pablo Neruda
  • San Manuel Bueno, martir by Miguel de Unamuno

Music Artists:

  • Wire
  • The Ex
  • Tito Puente
  • Parliament/Funkadelic
  • Fugazi

Films:

  • Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  • Viridiana
  • Bicycle Thieves
  • Die Hard

Last night we celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at The Hut with great beers and mixed drinks. Now, surely, someone reading this is offended that I would type such a statement. But I know Jesus would be cool with it. After all, Jesus did turn water into wine. At a wedding. A Jewish wedding. "Now wait again, Jean-Luc! How can YOU know what Jesus does and does not like? Who made you an arbiter of such things?" that same person is asking. Hey, if men of the cloth and bible thumpers that preach what they don't practice can do it, so can I. Besides, I was an altar boy (no, I did not get molested; though I did get paid to serve (NON-SEXUALLY!) at weddings and funerals). I did my penance. "I'm still a bit offended." Okay. But I ask you keep things in perspective. This post isn't as disrespectful as Google's Doodle honoring the late socialist Hugo Chavez on Easter. "No, perhaps not. I suppose you're right, Jean-Luc," that person will respond. I am right. QMMF. "Yes, you are. No you must teach me, Jean-Luc. You must teach me the ways of the secular flesh!"

Thanks to all the teams that came out last night and many special thanks to the crew of The Hut as well. Congratulations to Cognus on their 2nd place finish and winning a $15 gift certificate. 1st place and the $25 gift certificate went to Kevin's Wareing A Cast. No one submitted an email bonus answer. Get with it, folks. Better get on the gag ball next Sunday, 7PM, at The Hut for more Geeks Who Drink pub quiz. See you then!

Joe (Caribbean Joe)

I enjoy long walks on the beach, bourbon and zombies.

I have a BS in BS.  I can BS in at least 2 languages and I can convincingly imitate a few others.

I enjoy any occasion to dress up.  I will go disco, zombie or Mandalorian if you give me a reason.

I am Caribbean Joe.  Born in Texas, I lived in the southwest pretty much all my life.  A desert dweller's life for me.

So I picked up quizzing after my lovely fiancee and scorer, Island Amy, turned me on to the audition.  The rest is history.  Loving the quiz and the people it draws.  If I am not quizzing, you may find me out on 4th enjoying Tucson.

You may also see us on our scooters as we are members of a local club called Sky Island Riders.

If you want to know more, stop by and quiz and meet me and I just might answer your questions. Hell I may even answer you truthfully.

What do you pull out when you have a group of bored kids?  What do you need to have to start most games?  AC/DC have big ones.  That’s right, balls, or as Island Amy notes, it is BALLZ.  As most of you have caught on, she answers ballz for every drink ticket bonus.  Last night, we had the answer of testicles for the last bonus.  It was the one time Island Amy was at the bar and not answering the question.  It was as bad as being kicked in the balls.  Next time you’ll get it.  Keep your ballz ready.

So we have a little thing called the 4th Avenue Street Fair that goes on a couple of times a year.  Started by a bunch of hippies back in 1970, it has expanded to a big ole street party and it happens to run right in front of The Hut.  So while parking can get a little tight, there is plenty to do right before quiz.  It will be happening again later in the year.  So plan ahead.

Had a fun bit of quiz.  Plenty of sexy songs.  If a girl has a tongue ring, she’ll probably suck your dick.  I don’t see that as a bad thing.  We had rhymes, lots and lots of Asians, and interesting uses for peanut butter that didn’t involve dogs.  Lesser known partners got shafted by history or did they?  It’s not like anyone is going to write a tell-all book about them.  I like my place in society betwixt anonymity and notoriety.

Mark it 8 didn't have to use mind tricks to take 1st.  They won the $25 Hut gift certificate.  Second place went to Mrs. Chris for the $15 Hut gift certificate.  Email bonus winner Rebecca was looking fashionable in a Bacon candy necklace.  Way to win.

Thank you all for a kick ass night.  Keep your asses safe, because we want to see 'em back next week.  That is correct, we are quizzing on Easter!  So after a day of children hyped up on chocolate, come unwind with us at The Hut for quiz.  Chocolate bunny not included, so feel free to bring one to share.  Be at quiz. The power of Chris compels you.

Sometimes you just have to change things up.  After being knocked out for a week with the flu, I shaved in my fevered state.  It is a nice change though.  It was due since I had let my chops go since Christmas.  I looked damn nice for Geek Bowl though.

Happy Birthday Kyle!

So do you have one of those friends that you've always clicked with.  Someone you may go a few weeks without talking to, but you pick up as if no time has passed?  Well , I am lucky to have a buddy like that and he happened to come on by last night.  Since he lives in a sun baked land far away, I don't get to see him too often, but when we do, let's just say the most interesting man in the world has asked to join our festivities more than once.  So after experiencing my quiz with a small group of his enthusiastic co workers, they closed the tab and closed the night with a round of burritos and many bro hugs.  I expect nothing less.  So until we get a chance to hang again, raise a glass to your friends and may they forever be just a call away, no matter the miles or the time that separates you.

Quiz was a bit of fun.  A little of everything for you to snack on.

We started with Dat Ass. It turns out that the recipe for a Brass Monkey sounds gross, but was confirmed as delicious by a questionable quizzer.  Either way, I don't know if I'm going to try it anytime soon. Name checking in songs is something you do to add relevance to an otherwise mediocre offering.  So What?  Miley still makes shit tons more than I ever will.  Boo.  Also much to my surprise, Bone Thugs -n- Harmony was a thing when I was in high school, but I was really surprised to see that everyone know who they were.  Maybe we need to start a tribute band.  Bro Hugs -n- Agony perhaps?  Ok, so someone else marketed the idea, but I'm sure we thought of it first a long time ago.  How extensive is your vocabulary?  So it turns out I know lots of words, I just suck at pronouncing them.  Scythe has always been said as skythe in my mind.  It just makes sense since it has more of a cutting sound.  Oh well, GARDYLOO!!  We had 8 questions and 4 answers.  It turns out Sybil wanted to meet Matt Dillon in Jersey.  She's just going to have to Dream on.  Trees were the visual.  No Ents this time around, but was that a little person hanging from the tree in the Wizard of Oz?  The world may never know.  So Spring Break is a thing so many of you enjoyed and some even remembered enough to regret.  Since Lake Havasu is close enough to Tucson, we need a Geeks bus to go out there.   Oh the humanity!   Next we took a moment to remember 9/11.  Hollywood has done a lot to remember the day.  Some truly touching, others with their own agenda, but the important thing is that we not let those victims be forgotten.  Closing on a high note, Call Me, Maeby and Carly Rae Jepsen came together for an “I see what you did there” moment that was good for a chuckle.

The final standings gave us Pope Bracketology: Down to the Sweet Sistine as our first place team and they won the $25 Hut gift certificate.  Right behind them was It's not Geeks that Google for the $15 Hut gift certificate.  The email bonus prize of a potato gun went to Jeff and he immediately tried to shoot himself in the potato.  I also kicked out a few random items for your winning pleasure.  So hope you didn’t throw them out once you left the building.

Stay safe, and stay sane.  Make sure to like us on Facebook to stay up with quiz at The Hut and check out the Geeks site for info on all our quizzy goodness and check out the all new Hut page for info on upcoming shows and events including us!
