Firsts are always special, aren't they? Your first kiss, the first leaf gently swaying to the ground in the late summer breeze, the first day of school -- there's something magical about that maiden voyage, isn't there?
Such was the case at my first solo hosting opportunity tonight at the Brighton Beer Garden.
Like the first day of school, there were tons of new people milling about, and just like my first kiss, I was drinking beer and holding a microphone (I was a precocious tyke). This quiz, like that kiss, was an intimate affair -- no doubt the other residents of Brighton were busy writing studied reflections on the complicated historical relationship between labor unions and sustained financial growth. Brightonians are a notoriously essay-heavy lot.
Of the people in attendance tonight, many did not know that they would be doing a pub quiz. They were the luckiest; For them the quiz was a brilliant an unexpected surprise, like the giggle of a baby on the T, or catching just the perfect episode of Law and Order on a Sunday afternoon. Many of these people were attending a going-away party for somebody who was apparently headed for Singapore. Good luck in Singapore, whoever you are, if that is in fact where you are going!
Once the quiz started, it was clear that it would be very close up until the final bell. Or at least it would be if I had a bell, which reminds me -- I should buy a bell. Team Chunky Beard took the lead in round 1 and didn't let up, riding generally solid performances and a perfect visual round to gift certificate glory. Right on their heels though was You Are Beautiful, which for obvious reasons I will choose to believe is directed at me and not the world. They were right behind TCB the entire game, as was eventual third place finisher My Couch Pulls Out, But I Don't.
In fact, every team had a chance to take first place going into the final round, and they all acquitted themselves well -- each team jokered that round and got at least 9 questions right for by far the highest scoring round of the night.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to Geeks Who Drink for me and the crowd.
See you all next week!
