What would a final quiz be without controversy? Our contract is up at sideBAR and I had one last quiz to go out on. I filled my playlist with my favorite yacht rock songs and tried to let it be some serious smooth sailing.
Unfortunately, we had a VERY active upper deck tonight. A group of more than twelve divided into two teams. At the end of the night, one of those two teams won and the entire group started celebrating. Now I can't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that there were more than six people on the team that won, but most of the other teams found the whole thing highly suspect. I know it's possible for a group of more than six to divide fairly and squarely, but there were MANY people moving in and out and around that group of tables tonight. 90% of the loud noises/overtalking during round 7 happened due to the upper deck. I've run quizzes since 2009 and I know when the feeling isn't quite right. I decided to pull the trigger on my suspicions and disqualify Off in the Corner.
To Off in the Corner: I don't doubt your intelligence. I'm sure you're smart, personable people. I'm sorry I have to be the dick that disqualified you. I just find it highly, highly unlikely that the six of you played through that quiz without any outside assistance from the 15 people around you. I even received answer sheets from your other team that were nearly identical to yours. Same right answers, same wrong answers. If you genuinely didn't cheat at all on the "no more than six to a team" rule, I apologize. If it's any consolation, first place just wins ten drink tickets that aren't good for anything but Bud Light and well drinks. You're not missing out.
All that being said, it's been fun, sideBAR. My first quiz in NYC was back in May and we had a pretty good run. While there aren't any other GWD venues in NYC yet, we do have a presence in Hoboken, Jersey City, and other portions of New York. Check our schedule on the site for more information. Friends! Quizzers! Friends who are quizzers! We only have one week left at sideBAR. Come out next week for our fond farewell. We'll try to go out with a bang.
Yesterday's quiz was exciting and well attended. Raekwon's Toolbox did very well throughout the quiz and that consistency (combined with a well-deployed joker) gave them a comfortable finish in first place. The Muscle Hamsters finished seven points behind our winners for second place. They barely edged Chelsea Does LA who was saddened sideBAR doesn't award a third place prize. Sorry, ladies.
My favorite team for the evening may have been Longhorns who decided to play round 3 and the visual round only. An interesting strategy, but they were very consistent with their scores.
Come back next week! One last opportunity to get in excellent team names like Dinosaurs... in SPACE! Perhaps the sideBAR employees will surge to a final victory. Who knows?

Tonight's quiz had a pretty decent turnout. Jack Daniels won our email bonus prize and did quite well with many of the night's most difficult questions. My Couch Pulls Out, but I Don't managed to revive a name that I thought was long dead. The Staff Infection proved once again that the sideBAR staff are quite knowledgeable about most topics.
In the end, Silly Billy Joels slid from first down into second. The Dodgy Burritos had a great finish with a 24-point score in Random Knowledge. Congrats to everyone.
