You all seemed to have a pretty good grasp of the fact that flamingos get their pink color from their shrimp diet. Neil Gaiman has a bit more to add about the flamingo:
“Flamingos are not famed for their cutting intelligence, nor for their problem-solving abilities: confronted with a twist of wire and a bottle with something edible in it, a crow might try to make a tool out of the wire in order to get at the contents of the bottle. A flamingo, on the other hand, will try and eat the wire, if it looks like a shrimp, or possibly even if it doesn’t, just in case it was a new kind of shrimp.” –From Anansi Boys
I feel a bit guilty filling my blog with a big block quote like an undergrad writing a paper that’s a few pages short, but hey, I’m no Neil Gaiman. I can recognize when I’m beat in the writing department.
In a display of un-flamingo-like problem solving, Team Owesome! rocked tonight’s quiz. And I mean rocked it. Their lowest round score was a 6, and that only happened once. I also like the fact that their immediate reaction to winning a first place bar tab was “shots!” Second place Jorts W. Bush had my favorite name of the night, but I have no clue why. I’ve professed my love of puns in the past, but it’s not like this is a particularly GOOD pun. I mean, Jorts sounds like George. That’s about it. But it still cracks me up.
This week’s team names are an interesting mix, overall. I’m not sure what it says about the Roxy’s crowd, but we had two pedo joke team names, Chris Henson’s Secret Stash [sic] and Sandusky Shower Monitors. I might normally have a rebuke to these base names, but I think I lost the moral high ground this evening when I went into a slightly too long analogy between the proper use of my pencil sharpener and making love to a woman. But if we consider the opposite of the groan inducing team name the “wait, what?” team name, the universe (or at least our little part of it) was balanced by two semi-obscure scifi/pop culture team names. Blaidd Drwg might trigger a few more memories if I told you it’s Welsh for “bad wolf.” It’s a Doctor Who thing. I’m not sure if I can trigger any extra memories from the Star Wars inspired Caravan of Liquid Courage: A Pub Quiz Adventure. It’s an Ewok thing.
I’ll see you all next week. It’s a pub quiz thing.
