As everyone knows by now, I am a teacher. Grades are due tomorrow, and I am nowhere near done. In anticipation of an all-nighter, I was going to forgo the usual beer and drink a ton of soda at Quiz tonight. Then I was told Ska Brewing has a new mint stout. There went that idea. I was able to keep it to one beer, but damn if that wasn’t delicious stuff.
So, in the interest of me actually getting a little sleep tonight, or at least getting my grades done on time, we now skip ahead to our weekly feature, “What did we learn this week?”
- A closed captioner mistakenly thought that Tinkerbell was the Boston bomber.
- David Lee Roth sang for the Tokyo Paradise Ska Orchestra.
- Crocodile Dundee won the Master’s golf tournament this year.
- No one won the fight at the end of Rocky. They both knocked each other out.
- How many times do I have to say it? ALEXANDER HAMILTON WAS NEVER PRESIDENT!!!
- The Rebel Alliance got their first victory at the Battle of Hollywood.
- Moscow was a war-torn city in 1984. WWII lasted longer there than in most places.
- The Winter Olympics was held in Iran in 1984.
- Bilbo Baggins was played by Elton John.
- “The Nether Regions” is a special administrative region of China.
- Blues Traveler had a hit with the song “Do Robots Dream Of Electric Sheep?”
- Isaac Asimov and Apple teamed up to release the iRobot.
- The transport tissue in plants is known as the Eminem.
Incidentally, did anyone notice how many ASU fans/Tempe residents we had in the house tonight? Strange…
OK, that’s all for this week. Time for me to finish grades, then drag my no sleep butt to work. As always, go to www.geekswhodrink.com and www.facebook.com/pages/Geeks-Who-Drink-Pub-Quiz-At-Canyons-Crown/483388135009881 for all your geeky and drinky entertainment needs. See you next week. Cheers!

I apologize if this blog is a little late or a little short for your taste. I was busy glued to my TV since I got home from work, watching the capture of the second Boston bomber. I was rooting so hard for him to be shot in the balls on live TV, but alas, it was not to be. Regardless, they got that piece of shit. I love the city of Boston, and I have a lot of friends who live there. Pretty hard for me to have my mind on anything else today.
So last night broke a couple of records. Highest Number of Teams Who Totally Don’t Understand a Round. Also, Longest Amount of Time Taken to Explain a Round. The round on celebrities whose names make a sentence was a little confusing, as evidenced by our winning team’s name.
Finally, the Round we have all been waiting for! A Star Wars round! The entire venue loved this round. This is further evidence in support of my theory, “Everyone wants a Star Wars Theme Quiz, and it would be a huge success.”
A dart throw decided our second place tie, when one team missed the board and hit the wall. Well done.
A quick note: Not only must you be fast and correct on the bonus questions, but you must be LEGIBLE. That is all.
So, what did we learn last night?
- Sally Field played Tootie on “The Facts Of life”.
- George Burns made documentary films about the Civil War.
- Tina Turner wrote “The Notebook”.
- Roger Waters left Pink Floyd to direct “Pink Flamingos”.
- The term for threading rope through a chain is ‘fishburning’.
- The singer in Hall and Oates is named Google Hall.
- The Black Death of the 1300s came to Europe from China via the Orient Express, a railroad.
- The Chinese and their paper-making technology play a major role in Madden Football.
- In “The Empire Strikes Back”, when Leia tells Han “I love you”, he responds, “Blow me”.
- Both the Illuminati and the Avengers attempted to assassinate Margaret Thatcher.
- Hawaii is nearly perfectly rectangular in shape.
- The Governor from “The Walking Dead” is actually running for governor in South Carolina.
- 20,000 British workers were put out of work when Margaret Thatcher closed her legs.
- The above is the greatest wrong answer OF ALL TIME.
OK, that’s it for this week. It was a wicked good time. Until next week, have a Sam Adams in honor of the people of Boston, and go to www.geekswhodrink.com and tell them how wicked awesome the Stah Wahs round was. Then go to the Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Geeks-Who-Drink-Pub-Quiz-At-Canyons-Crown/483388135009881 and ‘like’ us. See you next week. Cheers!

I have a confession to make. I have never seen a single minute of The Sopranos. I did see The Godfather, Godfather II, and Goodfellas, once, 20 years ago. I would have gotten a grand total of zero had I been playing the Mafia Quiz. That fact didn’t really matter, since I was only asking the questions. I showed up ready to go last night at the Canyon’s Crown, and found that this theme was not the blockbuster that some other theme Quizzes have been. There were a bunch of people at the Crown, but only one was there for the Quiz. The front tables by my scoring table were reserved for Quizzers, and right at 8 o’clock my lone Quizzer had his two friends join him, and two more teams of two showed up. Now we had a Quiz!
Since most of the people in the restaurant were there only to eat dinner and have a few drinks, we decided to forgo the sound system and I stood in amongst the Quizzers and I asked them the questions up close and personal. By the end of Round 6 it was revealed the The Misses had named their team not for the fact that they were young women, but for the fact that they missed most of the questions. (Girls, if you’re reading this, don’t be mad. I was glad to have had you there last night, and I told you that making fun of people in the blog is how I roll.)
The two teams who stayed for the entire Quiz were total nutjobs for all three of the franchises of the Quiz, and the competition was extremely tight. After crowding around my laptop to hear Round 7, Rick and Jenny were ahead of The Cannolis by one point. Both teams had already used their jokers. Round 8 saw both teams score 12 points, and that was it. Rick and Jenny just barely whacked the Cannolis. The grand prize of $35 was handed out, and that was that. Fade to black, play “Don’t Stop Believin’”.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it. This was not a great turnout. But we had a really good time. The two teams who played the whole Quiz and I hung out for quite a while afterward. They discussed the answers, and then we to got to know each other a bit. They are not regulars at Quiz, but I think they are going to try a Thursday Quiz soon. I hope to see you guys there!
I think this would be a good time to point out www.geekswhodrink.com has a section entitled ‘Suggest A Round’. What do you guys want us to ask you more questions about? What themed Quiz would you show up to? *cough* Star Wars *cough* Also, go ‘like’ us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Geeks-Who-Drink-Pub-Quiz-At-Canyons-Crown/483388135009881. See you next Thursday for our regular Quiz at the Crown. Salud!
