Today was the last night of the Pub Quiz as Geeks Who Drink does it. They’re gearing up for Monday night football, and all the fans and fried food that go with it.
Thankfully, we had a great turn out for tonight’s game, which was a wonderful way to end our run here. It’s been a fun gig, and has introduced me to a new part of my not-so-new town.
Every evening as I read through the questions in prep for hosting, I try to play the game before looking at the answers. Tonight’s quiz had a smattering of questions on my favorite topics, including mythology, Shakespeare, sandwiches, and Sid Meier’s Civilization, which. . . let’s face it, I literally ruled. It’s what added to my Geek cred when trying to become a host. But enough about me.
Round one – ding!
Two teams missed round one and had trouble making up the difference. Round two went really well for two teams and they had the good sense to joker that round. By the end of round three, the top two teams had already distanced themselves from the pack.
Round four – ding!
Then we went historical and political, which was awesome. There’s a building in our fair city that looks just like a ziggurat and I couldn’t help adding that hint into the clue. See you at chillers had a perfect round four. Round five would have been closer if one player hadn’t recused himself. Round six… well let’s face it, I’ll take any pot shots at the Tea Party I can. And I enjoy it too. Afterall, when there’s a hurricane during their convention, it demonstrates their loyalty to show up in the rain. but when there’s liberals around, natural disasters aren’t mere weather phenomena… they’re sent to smite them tree-huggers. But I digress.
Round seven – ding!
The final contest came down to this. The top teams were about even in their rounds seven, as many recognized the tell-tale film clips. But round eight… as the Romans would say, opened a vein. Realistically, tonigght’s close contest for the top spot kept it a gripping game to the end.
Thank you all for welcoming me so warmly to the Limelight. It’s been great fun, now get home safely.
Tonight’s fun eavesdropping: three remarkably preppy guys choosing their Fantasy Football Team. I think you’re pretty solid, but really, the running back decision… I’m not so sure. Best of luck!

Tonight’s biggest question: would the LawGeek show up to claim her pitcher? I’ll kill the suspense – either she didn’t show, or she didn’t ask for it. Either way, at about round five we had the Limelight softball team come in, and they were equally effective at livening up the place.
The games theme of round one – frankly I thought would be a higher scoring round. When two teams jokered their high scoring audio rounds, they left the pack and began competing only with each other. Round three sang out ‘It’s Oscar Night’ – even though we’re far from Oscar season. About as far as one can get actually, since they’re in February. Monday night football might have been more apropos. One team named several movies that won in the Nineties – too bad that wasn’t my question. My favorite answer came from 2 Chimichangas with a piece of Chicken – “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Skipping ahead to round 5, I thought it’d be a challenging round, but apparently two teams anticipated my questions. By the time I got to round six though, the anagrams were irrelevant, it was all about the clues themselves.
Round seven was practically impossible to hear, which elicited a ‘Hey! I can barely hear the porn.’ I know kids, life’s tough. Finally came round eight, with one team to joker and an array of questions. With all the noise, my third place team left before hearing that they should stay to collect their prize. Come see me next week ladies, and collect your well deserved envelope!
Tonight’s fun eavesdropping: friends for decades talking about when they helped each other home after a night on the town. Laying on the hood of a woman’s car so she couldn’t leave without giving him her number… had me silently amused.

Preface:
I love eavesdropping on other tables while waiting for the quiz to start. I learn so much about the human condition. Today it was three divorcees who had each been married for over twenty years, talking about how the pitfalls of marriage. Having been married for just about a year, this is an interesting tutorial. And thanks to two double Scotches, this was a more than candid, more than expansive conversation.
Act One:
Another of those private joys is when all the answers of a round have a theme – like today’s round one on appetizers. I sometimes have a laugh when reading answers, and today I had one when 2 Tattooed Ladies suggested that “Bean Dip” was the name of a TV show. Imagine the premise, if you will. Then came round three, and for someone who has a minor in Shakespeare (well, sort of) this was a fun one – mostly because I could see the collective furrowing of brows as a few teams conferred: ‘I always thought that was a penis joke…’ Alas, poor Yorick, a petard is not pleasurable in the pants.
-Intermission-
Act Two:
The plot thickened as few teams jokered in these rounds and so we were held in suspense 'til the curtain fell. Round four - would you perform on a 'thrust'? These were challenging questions and low scoring rounds for many teams. Even the bonus questions ended with no beers given away. Except a pitcher sent to the noisy group as a bribe to head into the other room - what's a quiz master's tab for, after all? Round six had a format which was new to me: guess the single inaccuracy in a fact packed sentence. I did catch some mumbled four letter F-words (other than 'fact'). One may even say... petards!
-Intermission-
Act Three:
Talk about a fun round seven! But who the f*** is Capt. Jack Harkness? Couldn’t we have Capt. Jack Sparrow? He’s so much sexier! 'Nough said. Round eight – there was about to be a stand up outburst as I read ‘Taft’ and a member Team Drinko Supremo erupted with ‘I told you so!’ To quote one noted culture critic, those may be the four happiest words in the English language. In the end, we had a new team make the rankings. Welcome to Blank, scoring a respectable third place. I hope we’ll see you again next week.
Epilogue:
A shout out to the pewter pates (it seemed kinder than gray hairs) in the crowd who drove the distance to play tonight’s quiz. Thanks Mom and Dad!
Exeunt.
