Shane (Gallifreak)

10 years ago, I left the frozen tundra of Canada to escape the blistering cold of winter, only to move to South Texas where I now run the risk of combusting in the blistering heat of summer.  Apparently I'm drawn to extremes.  No middle of the road for this Crazy Canuck.

I was in severe need of a creative outlet and a place where yelling obsenities at people was acceptable, (and wouldn't get me fired).  Then one day I was handed a microphone by the Overlords at Geeks Who Drink.  I was instructed to "Go forth and entertain drunken nerds with wit and snark.  Oh, and ask them these quiz questions while you're there."

And so I did, and it was good.

If you quiz at a venue where video rounds are shown for round 7, then chances are it was produced by me.  I hope you enjoy them.

I have been accused of "hating everything" but I actually like many things.  I am a total geek for Star Wars, the works of Neil Gaiman, The Ramones, Shonen Knife, Nerdist, (Classic) Dr. Who, pro wrestling, good beer, poutine, British television and cheese.  All else is pointless, irrelevant and a waste of time.

I am also a part-time ninja.

So...there's that I guess.

Happy Labour Day everyone! Yes, I spell it with a “u” and you're just going to have to live with it. Hope everyone had a great three day weekend. And to those of you that came out to quiz tonight to close out your holiday weekend, I thank you. To those that were too busy with the grilling and the family visits and whatever else it is you all were doing, we had a great time without you. We even had a team come out this week that were brand spanking n00bs last week. Thanks for coming back gang!

BBTV was the kickoff to tonight's quiz. It was not a very hard concept to grasp, as all the tv shows were alliterative with the letter “b”.

I let me geek flag fly all over you guys tonight when I explained why Bruce Banner of The Incredible Hulk comic books became David Banner in the '70s TV series. It's true, the name change was because the man responsible for bringing the comic book to the small screen felt that the name Bruce was too stereotypically gay. Seriously. It's true. See, I'm here to educate as well as smash you in the face with the best damn pub quiz in San Antonio.

So, I'll admit it. I have no kids, and I've never seen Veggie Tales. But from the sounds of the show titles, I want nothing to do with it. It sounds like a bad acid trip...with Bibles.

When you have absolutely no idea what the answer is, by all means do your best to entertain me. It won't score you extra points, but I'll definitely enjoy it, and maybe even call you out on the mic. Calling the spawn of Beyonce and Jay Z “Babeyonce” was some mighty fine word play.

You guys made up some new board games during round 5. We had:

Mark Twain's Card Game Of Epicness

Let's See Who Cares About Your Dumb Opinions Game

Expensive Ice Cream Game

Name That Bearded Man.

I think my favourite question of the entire night was:

In The Quiet Man, John Wayne returns to Ireland and orders “one of them black beers”. At this point, everyone in the bar was probably waiting to write down Guinness. But then the rest of the question was asked, which was “What famous Irish-American directed the film?” And then the wind was let out of your sails. One team made me smile by replying, Alec GUINNESS. Very clever.

Word of advice if you guys want to beat the bar staff. ORDER MORE BEER. When you aren't ordering enough beer, they're not too busy running beer to your table and can actually answer questions and kick your asses. They were actually leading by a point or two all night until round 7. So get on that. Keep them running! It's the secret to your success. That's a pro-tip from me to you.

We'll be back again next week, but in the meantime, the All-Harry Potter Quiz is taking place in TWO DAYS. That's right. We're having this quiz on Wednesday, September 5th at the Firehouse Pub and Grill. If you think you've got the Potter smarts, come out for this quiz and test yourself. This quiz promises to be a good one! Seats will fill up quiz at the Firehouse, so get there early! Quiz starts at 8pm. GO HERE for more details. It's $5 a head and it goes into a winner-take-all prize pot.
