If there was one quiz where it sucked to be an anti-semite, it was this quiz. Not only did we have an entire round of Yiddish words quizzers had to define, but it was like every other question was either about a Jew or about a comic book (and in one case, about a comic book created by a couple of Jews).
But that wasn't the craziest thing we had going on. We had a birthday for one of our Lone Rangers, Kevin…..and so many people came out to celebrate that they had to split into two teams (you'll never ever guess what the other team was called). And amazingly, their scores were nearly identical. Well, to be fair, collaboration between teams is not technically against our rules - just having more than six people per team (in this context). So if quizzers want to split up into different teams and try to rule the podium, more power to them.
The other crazy thing was the resurgence of our first original superteam - originally know as the B Sharpes, but this time known as Shaquile O'niel Before Zod. (Love that name!) The boys are back in town with their second straight win…..which I guess means it's about time for Schiesse to return and dethrone them like they did last year.
And lastly, Ja Rule accomplished something we haven't seen in our 16 months at Saint Rocke. This was a very competitive quiz with scores clumped together. And that set the stage for Ja Rule to go from 12th to 3rd all with a nearly perfect 15 in Round 8 (with a Joker that they resisted using on the 12 they got in Round 2 - that takes some major Ja-Jas).
Remember, next week we start our Summer League for the Golden Road to Geek Bowl VIII!!!!

See what I did there? I incorporated two of our themes from Monday's quiz into one headline. Aren't I clever? <eyeroll>
Aaaanyway, when I promised you a very special quiz, I wasn't kidding. We a film crew recording us, had had a special guest QuizMaster, and we had the QuizMaster-in-Chief himself join us. It can't get much more special than that.
Oh, wait, IT CAN!!!!!
As if all that awesomeness wasn't enough, we also announced that Saint Rocke is presenting the "Golden Rock to Geek Bowl VIII." We'll be doing a league this Summer and again during the Fall, all culminating in one team earning their place in Geek Bowl VII in Austin, Texas, the weekend of 9 Feb 2014. Thanks for Golden Road Brewing and Saint Rocke for making this possible. The first night of the league will be Monday, 24 June. Teams can start registering on Monday, 17 June (more details about the quiz then).
Okay, let's talk about the quiz a little…..shall we.
As promised, everyone got eight BJs. I'm sorry for the disappoint that it was only in the from of answers that started with the letters "B" and "J." <wah wah waaaaaah>
Our audio round was especially created by our QMIC. He went all the way to Hong Kong and scoured every record store to find you these awesome covers of popular American songs. You haven't really heard the majesty of Tori Amos until you've heard it sung in Cantonese.
Round 3 was our "Sooner or Later" round where I gave a list of five car models and you gave me the care brands. However, if you turned in your answer sheet after three car models, you got two points per correct answer….and if you needed me give you the other two models, you only got one point. As expected, given that LA has a huge car culture, you guys did very well with the average being about 12 and two teams getting perfect 16s. Only two teams didn't turn in their answer sheets after the first three clues, but it was probably the right strategy for them because the last two clues helped them score a semi-perfect 8. Nicely done one and all.
However, since so many of you didn't know how well you would do on Round 3, you jokered Round 2. Normally jokering Round 2 is the right way to go, but that's part of the gamble when playing GWD.

What a idiot she is!!!! I've love to dedicate a blog on the past eight years she of comedic material she has provide us. But the truth is that at the end of the day, there is nothing funny about Michelle Bachmann…..she has done way more harm than good, and last night's question about how parents have stopped giving vaccinations to their kids because of a false fear of autism was a chilling reminder.
Now her "husband" Marcus Bachmann…..that sham of a marriage is truly funny. Maybe now that she's leaving public office he'll finally come out and share with us facts only his hairdresser knows.
Speaking of stereotypes, we had a fair share of them in the quiz. We basically had an entire visual round dedicated to it (what we refer to as "costumes," with the classic American insensitivity that has endeared us to the rest of the world for decades, other countries just call "clothes we wear every day").
Most quizzers started strong with a gimme Round 1. But we don't call the round "Duh!" for nothing. And the best part is that I got to make fun of Jerry Falwell for the umpteenth time. I mean, really, the Teletubbie Tinky Winky was gay because he had an upside-down triangle on his head? For the love of all things sane….
Our Round 2 audio gave us "The Sound of Color" (not "colored" - we might make racially insensitive jokes, but we try not to go over the line….too far). All clips were either songs or artists that had a color in them. And I'm still trying to figure out what color "Backstreet Boys" are.
Our 50/50 Round 3 asked you to guess whether or not the actor playing a high-schooler was older or younger than 18. And what we learned is that there are many many people in Hollywood in the late 20s desperately trying to hang onto their youth.
The round all about cattle was truly "Utter Bullshit" for some teams. Lots stumbled…..but no one more greatly than the team who thought Japan had the highest population of cows. The one time being racist and guessing India would have paid off, and you blew it!
In our round about bridges, I introduced many of you the movie Obi Wan Kenobi was best known (before Star Wars that is). And while "The Bridge on the River Kwai" is a classic movie, that actual bridge on the actual river called Kwai is really nothing to write home about.
For everyone unfamiliar with Trogdor, enjoy the following awesomeness!!!
And lastly, apparently very few of you use Reddit.
That is all for now. See you next week!
P.S. Thank you to everyone who showed up. Lots of old friends returned to the quiz….and many new faces. We had 23 teams play all eight rounds! It warms my heart to know that y'all had such a good time. This summer is going to be EPIC!!!!
