It was the best of times, it was the worst of...woops, sorry, that's something else. Well, now that I think of it. That line does hold true for our 2nd place team this week The Bearded Land Clams(I haven't decided if that's dirty or a real thing yet and I don't want to check Google because it might ruin it for me) but I'll get into that later. Another great quiz up at The Stone Church this week. We had some masterful performances from our quizzers. As well as another magestically masterful performance turned in by our Quiz God(I think this has a better ring than Quizmaster) Christian. Also let me say that I really being down off of the stage and sitting amongst my disciples last night. Sitting with the common folk really gave me a sense of self and helped keep me grounded for the evening. Although I didn't enjoy the bonus rounds. I liked it better when you were looking up at me instead of the other way around. But I digress.
For those of you who missed the quiz this week let me give you a recap...Pirates, Spice Girls, early lead for Swan Ronson, everyone's a biologist, new rounds, everyone love's The Princess Bride, I should have waited for more clues in round 3, final round is hard as hell, blown lead for Swan Ronson, tie, sudden death, tie breaker, holding up the musicians, GOOD NIGHT!!! God I would love it if that's all I needed to type in this blog lol. We had a couple new format rounds this week. Round 3 gave you several clues for a question after which you could turn in your answer sheets for double points. You could have circled the joker for quad points but none of you took advantage. Or you could wait and hear the rest of the questions and turn in your sheets for normal points. The double points really didn't help anyone this week and those teams(about half) who took the risk ended up scoring pretty much the same as those who waited. And remember kids, more than one movie took place in a desert and JFK was not the only dude assassinated. We also had a change to round 7. Normally identifying 8 movies or tv shows from sound clips, this week it was answering 8 questions about 1 clip. To everyone's delight the clip was from the Miracle Max scene of The Princess Bride. You guys seemed to really dig this round, not sure if it was just because everyone loves The Princess Bride or the round itself but I'm sensing it was a little of both. Either way hope you guys enjoyed the new stuff. Totally random side note(cause you know, stuff just pops into your head when you're sitting at a computer typing). Got to recite the Nazi motto last night. There's a sentance I never thought I'd say.
On to the finish. Now that the MFA+Physics team is no longer around to dominate the game we've been having very close games each week. This week was no different. Only 9 points seperated 1st and 7th place meaning that heading into the final round everything was up for grabs. Just to give you an idea here's how the game could have gone...Bearded Land Clams, if you had jokered round 2 instead of round 8 you would have scored 68 points and won the game. Can't Read My Joker Face if you had jokered round 2 instead of round 7 you would have ended up in a tie for 2nd place. I know a lot of teams like to save the Joker for round 8 but remember that round 8 is a lot of times the hardest round. Good rule of thumb. If you think you scored over 10 points in a 16 point round. Use the joker. Going into the final round Swan Ronson was looking like they would be our second straight wire to wire winner. Unfortunatly they fell apart a bit in the last round to finish outside the money. Instead we had some nice comebacks by The Bearded Land Clams and Not So Hard. Both teams being outside the top 5 at different points in the game. And when the dust and settled and all was said and done, we had a TIE at the top of the leaderboard. First time in the history of GWD at The Stone Church. So the match went to Sudden Death oooooohhhhhhh. Surely this 5 question round would settle this epic battle...but NO!!! After the 5 question sudden death round we were still TIED!!! Almost all the other teams reamained to see who our victor would be. At news of a second tie they let out a collective............god damnit, I want go home already. So we proceeded to a tie breaking round closest guess wins. The question: Take the number of current Oscar categories, times the number of ceremonies there have been. What's the product? Both teams pondered such a complicated question. They went back and forth, doing the math and then checking and rechecking their answers before finally coming to a final number............and both team weren't even close. The correct answer was 2,016(24x84). Both teams guessed under 1,000. But we must have a winner!!! And in the end, Not So Hard's shitty guess of 770 was better than Bearded Land Clams even shittier guess of 440. Congrats to our NEW Pub Quiz Heavyweight Champions(their first time I might add) THE BEARDED LAND CLAMS.
As always I hope you guys had fun last night and enjoyed reading this blog. See you next week, Same Geek Time, Same Geek Channel
