We had a record number of teams at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Costello’s Tavern last night as 15 groups of Geeks gathered for questions on the human body, colors, shit, and much more. It was crazy, there were times when you were all so eagerly anticipating the questions that you could hear a pin drop.

Winning the quiz was Dewey Decimators who took advantage of a new round theme to finish with 76 points. In second was Crystalline Entity, followed by Kingfisher. There were ties for fourth between Is That True? and My Teammate’s Here!, and for sixth between Trololo Trio and Chris Brown’s A Douche Bag. Eighth went to Marfy & Mike while Sexual Savants and Strap-Ons tied for ninth. The A-vengers, 49ers, 860 Pond Divers, Drunk Who Geeks, and Dylaroo rounded out the standings.

The breakdown of all the rounds is as follows:

Round 1 (Colors, Coloring, & Color Blindness) average – 4.29
Round 2 (Crowded Theaters Killed Free Speech) average – 8.8 (out of 16 points)
Round 3 (Sooner or Later: Where Did You Get That Degree Again?) average – 9.73 (out of 16 points)
Round 4 (A Load of Shit) average – 3.87
Round 5 (Xtreme Close-Ups) average – 7.14
Round 6 (Body Talk) average – 2.87
Round 7 (It’s Showtime at the Apollo) average – 3.53
Round 8 (Randos) average – 6.57 (out of 16 points)

The first round was straightforward—a round on colors, coloring, and color blindness. The audio round was on songs that had the word fire in them. The third round was a bit of a departure though. This week I tried a theme where each question had five clues—three hard ones and two easy ones. I read the hard clues to all the questions first and gave the Geeks a chance to turn in their rounds for two points per correct answer, then read the easy clues and gave one point per answer to the teams that waited.

Round four was a round on shit, and the visual round showed up close images of common items that the Geeks had to identify. The sixth round was on the human body and the second audio round was on live performances at the Apollo.

Nobody got higher than a six on the first round, picked up by 860 Pond Divers. The second round had two high scores of 12, by Chris Brown and Strap-Ons. Both Dewey Decimators and Kingfisher aced the third round and jokered it for a whopping 32 points. Crystalline Entity was not far behind with 14 points that they also jokered.

Five teams scored a round-high five points on the shit round. Everyone had either a seven or an eight on the visual round, with the spoon image being the one that threw most of the teams off (Rearview mirror? Really? Not with the way the reflected image was distorted.) Five was also the high score on the sixth round and three teams picked up six points on round seven. Only one team had a double-digit score on round eight—the eventual winners.
