The Geeks of Jamaica Plain pre-gamed for the Mars landing by playing eight rounds of the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Costello’s Tavern last night, where they answered questions on cinematic science, American Idol singers, Olympic flag bearers, and much more.
While Curiosity was gearing up to search the Red Planet for Unobtainium, which we learned was a real word even before Giovanni Ribisi labeled it in Avatar, Wrecked ‘Em? Damn Near Killed ‘Em! took the top spot in the quiz standings with 70 points. Kelp of My Discontent finished in second, followed closely by Preponderence of Puppies. Fourth went to Lazer Show, then Results Will Be Delayed Until Prime Time and Moby Dick Tracy Morgan Stanley who tied for fifth. Parker’s Posse, Dylaroo, and Mind the Gap rounded out the standings.
The breakdown of all the rounds is as follows:
Round 1 (Bad Movie Science) average – 6.56
Round 2 (It’s a Song! It’s a TV Show!) average – 5.44 (out of 16 points)
Round 3 (But They Sing On TV For Free!) average – 4.67
Round 4 (Eight Mostly Random Questions About Business) average – 4.75
Round 5 (Hot Pole Handlers) average – 7.63
Round 6 (Hip To Be Square) average – 5.38
Round 7 (Movies You Probably Didn’t Know You Were Quoting) average – 4.5
Round 8 (Randos) average – 9.25 (out of 16 points)
The first round was on faulty science on the big screen and included questions on stuff from Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and Avatar to name a few. The audio round had songs that shared a name with a TV show and the third round was a speed round on the top 10 American Idol participants in album sales.
Round four was self-explanatory while the visual round showed photos of Olympic athletes holding their country’s flag and asked the Geeks to identify the country. Hip to be square was a round on all things square and the second audio round had famous quotes whose cinematic origins might have been a little obscure.
While five teams got a seven on the first round, Wrecked ‘Em aced it. The audio round was challenging with Wrecked ‘Em and Preponderence each earning the high score of eight points. Lazer Show and Results both picked up seven points on the fourth round and all but one team had a perfect score on the visual round. Preponderence was perfect on round six and a high score of 12 points was picked up by Wrecked ‘Em and Kelp on the final round. Thanks to everyone who came last night and come back next week for another Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz.
