Quiz Schedule
Thursdays @ 8PM at Spirit Bar

I'm 23. My hair is weird colors sometimes. I collect records, love anime, and for some reason I'm a huge NASCAR fan (go #9!). My first words were "Price is Right" and I was president of my high school quiz bowl team for a year, so now I like to read trivia to my fellow drunks. Knowing answers to silly questions is like, IN MY BLOOD MAAAAN.

Every week at Spirit, there’s a curveball or two that makes the night a thrill. So even though tonight’s quiz was a relative rarity in that the top two teams were virtual runaways for the prizes (in a big field of 15 teams no less), there were still many yuks to be had.

Right off the bat, you could imagine my joy at meeting a pair of real life ‘Gansett Girls! Jamie and Tara were kind enough to visit the Spirit Bar this evening at the start of my quiz to represent Naragansett’s RI-brewed bierprodukt, pass out some samples and comp some free draught pints, and furnish a pretty ‘lil prize pack for tonight’s winner! If you put six bucks in my hand and ask me to get some beer, if possible I’ll almost always come back with a six-pack of ‘Gansett tallboys, so it was an honor to have ‘em rep.

When we got down to the quiz biz, it was a combo of botched jokerings and an array of awful rounds that put our eventual top two so far ahead from the rest. Eventual runners-up A-Town Stay Down even fell victim to this plague, as they jokered a 7-point Round 4 instead of their 14-point Round 2, or their 14-point Round 8 for that matter. Opting for one of those two rounds would have at least put them a couple points off the lead, but alas the joker can be a cruel thing. Just ask 3rd place Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Jarse, who jokered an 11-point round 2 instead of a 14-point round 8. Or the two teams who tied for 5th, Bully Beardy Baldy and Tim and Stocking Up On Abortions Before The Election. This epidemic was widespread. You could also blame a flurry of 4-point rounds for all the teams between 3rd and 9th place for the rapid ascension of the top two.

Obviously, when so many quizzees slip on their proverbial banana peels throughout the evening, you’re liable to have a mutiny against our valiant quizmaster. Thus arrived Round 7, the audio round on Halloween-themed TV episodes and the series which birthed them. In Question 6 in Round 7, the clip was from popular ‘90s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210. In Planet Earth’s eternal, inherent laziness, inevitably a ton of teams would answer simply “90210” and expect to be credited for a point. Listen, y’all, I don’t care how old you are and how irrelevant you find The CW’s probably awful recent remake 90210 to be, the fact of the matter is that it exists and it’s taken that title, and as a quizmaster, if you write that down I have no choice but to assume that’s what you’re answering, and that’s a wrong answer. Beverly Hills 90210, the famous series from the ‘90s, is correct, and 90210, its inexplicable remake, is wrong. Next time, don’t get lazy and WRITE THE WHOLE THING. It’ll take you less energy than steadily booing me for a solid 30 seconds. Kthxbai. Also consider the fact I accepted “The Peanuts” or “Charlie Brown” instead of It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in the very same round, and we’re even, bitches. Perhaps the

That whole boondoggle’s only over one single point though, and through the exemplary, sharp work of our new champs In Second Place: Jarvis and the runners up A-Town Stay Down, that question’s hardly worth anyone’s rancid deuce. In Second Place: Jarvis have visited the Spirit on a Thursday some months ago and played our quiz, but didn’t achieve anything close to the solid rout they gave the huge crowd tonight. So congrats to our new champs, and here’s hoping we’ve got another new razor-sharp regular on our hands for any and all n00bs to take on! As always, I challenge you to taste the Spirit crew some Thursday and see how you stack up. It’s a nasty scene!
