So that happened.
Which was awful and tragic, but also not something I can write any more about. So that’s all you’ll see me say about last week’s events. There was a disabled green line train this morning that delayed my commute, causing me to put the snarl back on my face as I stared down every human who came within two feet of me. All is back to normal here in Beantown.
And normalcy included having a Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Tommy Doyle’s last night. Seven teams assembled and Taters in the Root Cellar took first place with an impressive score of 91 points. Second went to If You Skip Trivia, the Terrorists Win, while Too Soon and Dikembe Mutombo tied for third. Zooey Deschanel Sleeper Cell and 18 Hour Tour tied for fifth, and Walkin Talkin Stephen Hawking rounded out the standings.
The first round was titled Ma’am-agrams, where every answer was an anagram of a phrase from the question. Six of the seven teams aced that one, with the lone trouble question being the Arianna Huffington one. The audio round had eight well-known songs being trashed by Nouvelle Vague. We had some teams do very well on that one, including the top two finishers who both aced it. Round three was a round 14 years in the making—Britney or Christina. We had great marks on that one, with all scores falling between six and eight.
All answers to the fourth round ended in either ZZ or TOP. For the first question, all I had to do was read off “Simon Pegg” and you all knew where that one was heading. Had to give you all at least one gimme last night. The visual round showed eight saints and listed out eight peoples, places, or things and the Geeks had to match the saint with the noun that he or she was the patron of. This include St. Fiacre who is the patron saint of venereal diseases, as well as St. Isidore of Seville, who was years ahead of his time in patronizing a simple thing called the Internet.
Round six was on Aussie firsts, which you all for the most part did surprisingly well on. That was followed by the second audio round of sound bites where someone is famously resigning, retiring, or signing off. It included Scarface from Half Baked who hates four of five people around him, which none of you guys got right.
Thanks to all who came and played the quiz. Have a safe week and see you all next time for another Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz.

Once again, I was reminded that I can always rely on my Geeks to keep me apprised of current events. Coming off of one of those days where I was afforded maybe two glances at my personal emails, never mind my news sites, I was completely unawares that Margaret Thatcher had kicked it. But when not one, not two, but three teams made Iron Lady references, I figured something had happened that warranted my attention. Thanks guys for keeping me up to date with the news.
So eight teams gathered for the quiz last night, and winning it was Tinker, Tater, Soldier, Spud with 87 points. Finishing in second was The Yorkshire Miner’s Stroke, while Epcot Sexpots and Bung Dangler IPA tied for third. Fifth went to Break a Leg, Louisville! then Iron Lady Boys and Even Iron Ladies Rust. Rounding out the standings was Cunning Stunts.
The first round was titled La La La and included eight questions that started with the letters la. After that was a not-so-racist audio round called Bad English, and a sooner or later round on sports titled Play With My Balls.
Round four was on famous Carls (or Karls), and the visual round showed eight celebrities that had been slimed for the Geeks to identify. Then came a round titled Be Excellent to Each Other, where I asked eight questions on the real-life people in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The seventh round was an audio round on judges.
Thanks to all who came out and played the quiz last night. Even with the Boston Marathon next Monday, we will still be quizzing, so stay out of trouble and I’ll see you all next week.

This past weekend I was in NYC where I had the good fortune of being served beer from a friend who was having so much trouble getting people to take the beer from her that she offered to flash anyone who let her pour beer in their glasses. I naturally gave her my empty pint glass which she filled to the top and then proceeded to flash me. Once back in my hand I took a big gulp, gave it back to her, and said, “Can I get a top off?”
This has little to do with the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Tommy Doyle’s last night, except that it might be the next thing NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg tries to ban—overeager beer pouring. In addition to the current events round, we had a Duh! round, an audio rhyming round, a round on UNIX and eunuchs, and much more.
It was close, but in the end Snarf Snarf claimed victory with 74 points. Kevin Ware Puts His Best Foot Forward finished in second while Tragic Carpet Ride took third. In fourth place were the Taco Dicks, followed by Kevin Ware to Join “Cast” of Spring “Breakers” and Zombie Jesus Wants to Eat Darrell’s Brains. Seventh went to Rapbor His No Dony, which I spent about 30 minutes scanning various internet memes to try to figure out the origin, before realizing they just have bad penmanship. Kim Jong Un-hinged and I Don’t Remember the 80s rounded out the standings.
The first round was the Duh round where we learned about a pair of Australian Rules Football teams, and that was followed by an audio round titled Get a Bed! Round three was called Historical Fuckups and the fourth round was the Recently in Stuff round.
The visual round asked the Geeks to identify parts of a bicycle, while round six was on UNIX and eunuchs. Disappointingly, despite my playing The Who’s Boris the Spider during that round, a few of you still got the Lord Varys’s nickname question wrong. The second audio round was on a series of sound bites with a running rhyme between all the answers.
Thanks to all for playing at the quiz last night. Don’t forget to click the like button to the left and get on our mailing list. See you all next Monday for another Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz.
