Whereas last week was the night of welcoming five new teams or something like that, last night was the return of the regulars. The taters, beer pressure, and a few others came back to swell the ranks up to 10 teams of Geeks eager to match wits on fuels and injections, Romney or Howell, 2012 film trailers, and much more.
We returned to the upstairs bar where we filled up the floor while spring training baseball played on the televisions overhead. I won’t digress on my thoughts about spring training baseball except to say that I could care less about the number of outfield laps our pitchers have to run after their outings.
Down by a point after seven rounds, Obligatory Taters Reference (rebooting the franchise?) outscored Birth Control Sluts 12-10 in the final round to win the quiz. Limbaugh’s Sluts (no relation) finished third while Pee Wee Taters (related indeed) came in fourth. Fifth place finishers Stoop Kidz had played other GWD venues, but this was their first time at Tommy Doyles. In sixth was Nonconsensual Reacharound, followed by Beer Pressure (missed you last week), Science Olympians, Mexican Humping Twirly Bitches, and Fluffy & The Stache.
The breakdown of all the rounds is as follows:
Round 1 (Fuels & Injections) average – 4.9
Round 2 (I’m Not Fat, I’m Big-Lunged) average – 9.6 (out of 16 points)
Round 3 (Mitt Romney or Thurston Howell III) average – 7.3
Round 4 (Rated M For Middle School) average – 3.89
Round 5 (The Acid Just Kicked In) average – 6.22
Round 6 (Magnets, Toes, & Magneto) average – 4.33
Round 7 (’90, ’00, & ’10 In Film) average – 5
Round 8 (Randos) average – 8.63 (out of 16 points)
There were a handful of good scores for the top five teams in round two (one 13, three 12s, and one 11). Many knew the first singer was Adele, though few were able to get the song title right. Many also got the Meatloaf answer correct though nobody was able to tell me that the song title was Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are. Mexican could have earned an extra point had they put Queen Latifah instead of just Queen. They don’t really sound the same.
The Romney/Howell round was a success—six perfect scores and three sevens. The visual round also yielded a pair of eights and three sevens. Round four, the 2012 movie trailer summary round was more difficult, as was the Magneto round. (Really Geeks? You couldn’t tell that the first movie description was for The Hobbit?) The "I'm sorry to make fun of you, but this is too good" answer of the night was Children of Man for the question about movies that were based on historical events. Way to go for selecting a movie about a futuristic society of an infertile humanity.
In closing, vote for Geeks Who Drink for Boston’s Best Trivia Night in the Boston Phoenix’s Best of awards. You must vote for at least three separate categories and make sure you follow through step two to submit your votes. The voting ends later this week so get your votes in today!
Also, the annual Geeks Who Drink players quiz is up. Take the survey here and let GWD know how awesome we are. Three of you will be chosen to receive a $50 gift certificate to the venue of your choice and if your responses crack us up, we’ll share them with the world.
