As I walked into Tommy Doyle’s at 6:30 last night, a group of guys on the main floor asked me if I was in charge of the quiz (was it the speaker I was lugging in?). When I told them I was, they asked me if I could get them in. I blinked twice and stared at them for a second as I came to the realization that all the tables in the upstairs bar must have already been taken a full 90 minutes before the quiz was even scheduled to start.
Sure enough, the Arrested Development themed quiz at TD’s last night drew more than twice as many teams as that bar has ever seen for a GWD quiz as 41 groups of Geeks gathered to match wits on our favorite Bluths and their friends, foes, and everyone in between.
And just to put that in perspective, our biggest night before last night was a 17-team showing. And that quiz had teams standing up to play. Throw in another 24 teams and we had an impressive spectacle of Geeks writing down answers on each other’s backs in between tables as they fought for the $470 cash prize.
And might I add that we added a second show to accommodate the teams that couldn’t get a spot. It ended up a night/late-night doubleheader. This really needs to be seen to be believed. (Pictures of the crowd included in the slideshow.)
When you get teams willing to stand on their heads to take the quiz, you know it’s going to be a rocking night. I truly appreciate everyone’s patience as we tried to collect and score 41 answer sheets after each round in a space no larger than the model home’s attic. And I give my apologies to all the teams that I couldn’t give my full and undivided attention to as I had to wrap up one quiz and set up for another in as little time as possible.
Anyways, to recap, John and I started signing in teams at 7:15 and got everyone situated just in time for the 8 p.m. start. Other than three teams trying to call themselves The Banangrabbers, everyone had a unique name prepared for this, with some of my favorites being Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog Lobs Law Bomb, The Bluth Sleuths, Molested Development, Magnitude Has Pop Pop in the Attic, The Musty Old Clap Traps, and Ten Cents Gets You Nuts.
The first round was aced by three teams—The Mayoneggs, Who Left The Cap Off My Fucking Glisten, and Crindy. Round three saw 23 teams get the full eight points. Mayoneggs and The Team in the $6,000 Suit were both perfect in the fourth round. While 32 teams aced the visual round, nobody got the full eight points on round six. 27 teams were again perfect on round seven. The high score for random knowledge was a 13, shared by $6,000 suit and The Selfish Country Music Loving Ladies.
At the end of the night, one team emerged victorious—The Team in the $6,000 suit. The Selfish Country Music Loving Ladies finished in second, followed by Hero Squad, The Mayoneggs, and Barbara & Dee. For the full standings, just look at the list of teams under the photos.
Thanks are in order to John who helped me keep pace, the Tommy Doyle’s staff for handling the needs of 188 Geeks, my girlfriend who took a study break to help snap some photos of the teams, and most importantly to you all who came to the quiz and made it the most amaze-balls time we’ve had.
