At the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Tommy Doyle’s last night, we had a special round on definitions of common Yiddish words. There were eight of them and I will attempt to use each one in this blog. The quiz ran concurrent with the Bruins game, but we still had six teams ready to do battle, schlepping their soon-to-be-drunk selves to the Crimson Lounge where they exhibited a chutzpah on par with Tuukka Rask’s when he’s playing in net.

After eight rounds were over, Blackhawks Down and Kanye is My Baby Daddy finished in a first place tie. We settled it with a five-question tie-breaker and Blackhawks proved to not be schmendricks as they won it 4-2. Taking third was Double Rainbow All the Way, followed by Where’s Andy? and Swedish Meatballs. Don’t know where Andy ended up, his friends might want to clear up that fermisht. Rounding out the standings was Is That a Ring in Your Pocket, or the KGB.

The first round was on various stars and stripes and that was followed by an audio round titled Opposites Attract. Round three was the Yiddish definitions round, then came a round on books where I read off a publication year and a description of the book’s title character(s) for the Geeks to identify. Unless you’re a Hemingway fanatic, there was nothing too schmaltz in that round.

The visual round had eight common not-so-bupkes household items and the Geeks had to identify their chemical names. That was followed by a round titled Huey, Dewey, and Louie that quizzed everyone on various Hueys, Deweys, and Louies. The second audio round was called Tip Your TV Waitstaff and had eight clips from bar/restaurant scenes of different television shows. My sugar would have gone meshuga for me not using a clip with Penny from Big Bang Theory, but she wasn’t there so oh well.

Most teams did very well on the first audio round. We even had 15- and 14-point scores. Three teams got a seven on the Yiddish round and three teams aced round four. In impressive fashion, all six teams had perfect scores on the visual round, which left me very suspicious as to whether or not I have a bunch of meth chefs at my quiz. At least nobody was kvetching about its difficulty.

Thanks to all for coming out and joining us, even as the rain stormed through and the Bruins played in the Stanley Cup finals. Have great weeks everyone, make sure you click the like button to the left, and see you all next Monday.

The Game of Thrones themed quiz hangover had just barely worn off before we were back at it again at Tommy Doyle’s for the regularly scheduled Monday night Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz. Topics for the evening included BJs, car models, Holmes and Watsons, and much more. As for your team names, it seems Tim Tebow and the NSA were tops on your minds. I was partly surprised there was no “The NSA knows everything, Jon Snow” team name. C’mon guys!

This quiz went down to the final round, but in the end, Our Tebow is an Awesome Tebow finished on top with a score of 88 points. Behind them was Slow Boat From Hong Kong and Hong Kong Asylum. Two teams tied for fourth—Go Home, Belichick! You’re Drunk! and Team Edward – Snowden. In sixth was When Tebow Prays, NSA Listens, then The NSA Know’s What You’re Thinking!, Nina Garcia & the Tortmagnets, and Banks Street Elite. Rounding out the bottom three were Only the NSA Knows This Team Name, Chitown Goin’ Down, and Trixie & The Hobbitses. Overall, that made five NSA references, two Tebow references, and one team name that referenced both.

The first round was themed Gimme a BJ and had eight references to people or things that have the initials B and J in them. The first audio round included eight songs covered eurodance style for the Geeks to identify, and round three was a sooner or later round on car models and brands.

Round four was titled JK! JK! and had questions on pranks, goofs, retractions, and shit that didn’t really pan out, like cold fusion, the discovery of WMDs in Iraq, and the Smashing Pumpkins reunion. Round five was the visual round that showed various Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watsons for the Geeks to ID. That was followed by a round called Foiled Again!, which asked questions on various foils, from the metallic kind to various FOIL acronyms and other stuff.

The second audio round had eight random questions whose answers were all mentioned somewhere in the Bloodhoung Gang’s song The Bad Touch. From smothered and covered Waffle House hashbrowns to Mr. Coffee and its automatic drip to the ideal sex position for watching The X-Files, who knew that song was so informative.

Thanks everyone for coming out to the quiz last night. As always, click the like button to the left to let everyone else know what they missed out on and come back next week for another Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz!

Geeks from all of the Seven Kingdoms as well as from across the Narrow Sea gathered at Tommy Doyle’s in Harvard Square last night for Fire Cannot Kill a Quizmaster: A Game of Thrones Quiz, where they faced off on questions about everything from religion to weapons to the wit, wisdom, and wrath of Tyrion Lannister, and much much more.

Very early on it was clear that many teams had a solid grasp of the ASOIAF universe. The first round, themed It Beats Being a Eunuch: A round on orphans and bastards, came back with an average score of 7.48. Next up was the first audio round, titled Interrupting Hodor, where we had eight clips from the TV show or the audio books, and replaced the name of a character with Hodor. That one was just slightly more difficult as only three teams aced it, though the average score was still a 6.43.

The speed round required the Geeks to list out those on Arya’s hit list at one time or another-either in her nightly prayer or to Jaqen H’ghar. Again, the Geeks came back with an average score still above six with nine perfect scores. Round four was on the tools of war and here’s where we started separating the rangers from the stewards. The average score on this one was a 4.68 with only two perfect scores. The visual round was a slam dunk for all but four teams. It required the Geeks to match up the sigil with the house.

Round six was the round on spirituality in the Known World and the Geeks had an average score of 5.78 on that one. On the second audio round, I played clips of Tyrion spewing wisdom, wit, or wrath upon someone and the Geeks had to identify who he was speaking to. The average score for this one was a 6.80. The random knowledge round covered all topics and came back with an average score of 12.24. There were six perfect scores on this one.

The winning team at the quiz was Craster’s Sons who were one question shy of a perfect score. Their take home prize? $455 in cold hard cash. There was a three-way tie for second place between Dark Beers Dark Words, Brotherhood without Banners, and How to Save a Life by the Freys. I gave them five sudden death questions and it was DBDW that got the most right to take the second place prize. We also had a costume contest that was part dance contest as I had those who dressed up strut their outfits to The Bear and the Maiden Fair by The Hold Steady. Congrats to our Peter Baelish lookalike for winning that one.

Thanks to everyone who showed up last night. You made this night awesome. And thanks to westeros.org for co-sponsoring the event and to Pandemonium Books & Games for providing the costume contest prize. You'll see a lot of the photos from this quiz at the Tommy Doyle's GWD Facebook page so feel free to tag yourselves there.
