Walking into the Phoenix landing tonight I pondered how many teams I’d actually get because the Bruins Stanley Cup game was set to start shortly after the quiz. I showed up early and the sparsely attended room gave me cause for concern as well as the abundance of people in Blackhawks jerseys. Turns out I had nothing to fear and when quiz time got underway we had 10 teams on the books. Not bad for a quiz that coincided with a major spectator sporting event. Watch the game and quiz at the same time right?
Duh Da Duh Duh Da Duh Duh Da Duh Duh Duh Da Da (To the tune of Chelsea Dagger) opted to joker the sooner score of round 3 and that 24 point accumulation made them our early leaders. Joker activity for round 2 was rather reserved and although Central Square is for Lovers felt good enough about their round 3 answers to turn them all in sooner they chose not to joker that score. They got a perfect score of 8 for 8 and since they turned it in sooner they doubled that score and a joker would have tripled it. In addition they also got 14 points on round 2 and didn’t joker that! Would this apparent mis-use of the joker come back to haunt Central Square? I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll mention it again-you can never win by not jokering a 16-point round. We offered three tonight (rounds 2, 3 and 8) and although they performed the most poorly of those three in round 8, Central Square jokered that round to come from behind and beat everyone in a stunner. Duh Da Duh was leading all night long but their performance declined with each round and when you go into the last round as the announced leader you always need to assume that someone out there could be sitting on a joker which could vault them over the top. Duh Da Duh eventually settled for 2nd place, with The NSA Probably has all the quiz answers already falling behind in 3rd. Carl from Man of Steel Reserver won this weeks e-mail bonus prize of a “go fuck yourself” office paperweight. Cool!
I had to stop the quiz a couple time to comment on and celebrate a couple of Bruins goals but I didn’t mind. The fact that people came out to quiz tonight instead of staying home to watch hockey made me feel warm inside. I was also delighted at the bravery of the entire room when they all turned in round 3 sooner rather than later. We also found out that when you take vocals out of a popular song and play just a karaoke backing track, those songs can be pretty tough to identify and/or indistinguishable. As the quiz ended I figured I’d stick around and watch the end of regulation of the Bruins game. As that ended I figured I’d stick around for the first overtime. Halfway through overtime number 2 I figured I’d need to somehow make my way to the subway in an effort to get home. I got there in time to witness the bitter end, but oh what a night. See you next week!

Another Wednesday night was upon us as well as another crucial Bruin’s playoff game. Would that be reason to cancel the quiz? Of course not! 10 teams showed up tonight, and most people played by the rules and kept the team count to 6 or under…more on that to follow. A room full of regulars were in attendance including the inevitable return of Rondo! as well as GWD quizmasters John Tullar and Jon Gabso who had the night off because their quiz in Allston Rat City was cancelled due to sports related activities.
Anyhow, the quiz action got off to a hot start with 9 Rivers Country Club and Rando! taking an early lead. Both these teams jokered round 2 for some serious points and commanding 1st and 2nd place all the way up to that salty and savory round on Kevin Bacon in round 7. This was a very creative and playful audio round which required a very keen sense of attention in order to get each of the successive questions correct. To my shock and delight, three teams nailed this round for 14 points or more and jokered it. Those three teams were none other than last weeks champions I Just Blue Myself as well as the Urban Achievers and Axis and Ally. Going into round 8 the two early leaders and the three new top teams were all very close going into that round. Even though a handful of teams still had the joker up their sleeve for round 8, there was no catching any of these five teams tonight. Who would win and who would lose? It became clear that Blue had no chance of winning due to a violation of quiz rules brought to my attention by many quizzers late in the game. There were 7 people at their table, and while I was told that “she came late and she’s not even playing” I had to take the peoples word. Performance was as tight as possible in round 8 and when the dust settled we had a THREE WAY TIE FOR FIRST. One of those teams in the tie was your aforementioned disqualified quizzers, so that settled one side of the tie. How to settle the other tied teams? A last minute winner take 1st, loser take 2nd quantitative tiebreaker question. Did you know the world’s longest train tunnel is in Switzerland? The Axis and Ally knew the closest number to how long it was in yards and won the tiebreaker over Urban Achievers. Rando! finished one point behind these tied teams following round 8 and effectively took 3rd place. Also, team Rondo! walked out of the room before round 8 knowing they were out of the race. What the fuck guys?!
Even though I was certain the 4-point Beatles related question in round 8 would be a gimme, most teams had a problem with it. I even cried a little inside. Carl from It’s a Nice Day for a Red Wedding won this week’s e-mail bonus prize of a pretty spiffy GWD pint glass. An unidentified female member of the same team drew a lot of hearts on every answer pad and may or may not have tried to woo me throughout the quiz. So goes the life of a quizmaster.

Summer is in full effect in Cambridge, and while I could understand why some people wanted to be outside instead of quizzing with me I don’t necessarily have to endorse it. Seven teams battled it out tonight and we crowned a new champion out of a team of die-hard regulars who have been down on their luck for months. We also had some fresh faces join the quiz and although they didn’t fully grasp the concept of optimal deployment of the joker tonight, they will learn in short time.
Tonight’s quiz was outright dominated by Shout it Out who were your perennial leaders and eventual winners. It felt good to hand the first prize out to Jeff and Matt of that team who show up every week to quiz. They had a dominant team over a year ago, but some ringers moved out of Boston. Nevertheless, redemption was served to Shout. For a team who leant a playful nod to not giving the quiz their focus, We’re only here to watch Soccer Reruns did quite well for themselves and secured 2nd place at the end of quiz regulation. Rounding out the prize circle was There’s always Money in the Banana Stand. I also had a fun time pretending to not recognize the Arrested Development reference and was met with shouts of “It’s a TV Show, its really funny!!” from one table of quizzers. Also, a female member of Banana won the e-mail prize this week which was a bottle of hand sanitizer.
I was incredibly bummed when the room showed their age by collectively blowing the 80s/90s college rock band question. I could understand how the name of the lead singer of Midnight Oil could be elusive but are we all too young to not remember REM?! Jeebus. Also for the record, I don’t find Paul Thomas Anderson to be “tedious”. So it goes. I’m about to enjoy some sunshine myself, see you next week!
