Colin (Rainier)

Folks around these parts know me by a lot of names. Having grown up in Seattle I went by Cookie during my time playing baseball. Also had the nickname Nature Boy at summer camp, and in high school Spanish class I was Diablo. Along with my many names come many talents. I was the state pickleball champion two years in a row (2005-2006) and have a pretty mean drinking arm when it comes to bar games. Try your luck and challenge me to some pool if you feel lucky. Am a passionate world traveler with plenty of plans to keep moving along in the future. Currently enjoying life and laying it all on the line Monday night at the Blue Star Cafe & Pub.

A rick rolling good time was had at the Blue Star last night and those that made it out can attest to that. Since some couldn't make it I figure another blog wrap up is in order for the less fortunate. Instead of the movie wrap up I think we are going to go old school with a classic quizmaster opinion summery so get ready to hear some of my thoughts. If you agree with them we should be fine, but if anything doesn’t sit well with you I think it is best if you just change cause you are wrong. So here we go ladies and gentleman.

In round one we found out who liked fake wrestling and who didn't. As you can tell from the last sentence I am not a fan; however, I can respect the theater of the production those guys in leotards put on once a week. It isn't Masterpiece Theater, but it sure as heck beats the crap put on by grade school kids. Granted in my third grade production of the lion king I was a wicked cheetah.

Round 2 was all about the bad boys across the pond. It got some people excited and a few fell into the trap. Remember people if I don’t ask for original artist it means whoever is singing in the audio clip is who I am looking for. PRO TIP: Word choice matters in Pub Quiz.

Round 3 was a round rocked by many. Seems people pay attention when characters died in movie because seriously I don’t remember all the deaths in the saw movie I saw. Though I do remember the blondes in the tanning bed death from the Final Destination movie I watched. We also learned that while Michael Bay perfected action over everything directing this round made Die Hard sound like it was one of his creations. Instead it was John McTiernan who also directed The Hunt for Red October as well as Die Hard  with a Vengeance.

The next round was all about the great adventures of people. A personal favorite of mine as it had a little bit of history and geography *My favorite quiz subjects!* Across the board everyone did really well on this round with the lowest score being 4. Interestingly enough; however, no team got a 8. Also for your enjoyment look up a picture of the guy who made it to the South Pole. His name again was Roald Amundsen. Dude was a badass.

The visual round featured some lovely ladies from the past including the lovely Twiggy who as we all know was picked up in a gas station by Elwood in the Blues Brothers movie. Also it is scary to think that in less than ten years or so Tyra Banks is more than likely going to show up in a round similar to this. Not that she is old or we are just a comment on how fast we cycle through the top models of the generation. Isn’t Heidi Klum on cable or something?

Next up we featured the great economies of Brazil, China, India, and Russia which was also a great round. After all who doesn’t love Bollywood! Plus for those who didn’t want to hear it I will say it again. The word was jiao [jee-OW] and ten of them make up a Yuan. Granted this is all bunk because Russia has a much cooler sounding currency known as the ruble. Seriously it sounds like it came from a role playing game currency or something.

The second audio round put a lot of smiles on peoples faces; however, that should always be a warning to you people. We  know that everyone would have been alive in the 90’s so of course we are going to make it hard. Sure a few easy ones will get in there (Full House!) but that is because we are nice. The low score was a 3 with no team getting an 8 on this round as well.

We ended the night on a high note from the looks of your team scores for round 8. The low being a 7 with every other team getting an 11 or higher. Still the three 16 point rounds teams earned were two in the first audio and one in round 3 (Good on you!)

That about wraps up my summery. It ended with a four way tie for third which was won by nubbin because I DON’T DO PRICE IS RIGHT RULES. Seriously people I am not Drew Carey. Though I do sometimes think of myself as a younger better handsomer Bob Barker. The final standings of the night were.

1st - The team I want to win

2nd - Ted Nugget

3rd - Nubbin

3rd -Dr. Spaceman

3rd -Name TBD

3rd -The Couch Pulls Out But I Don't (This is the first and only time I let this team name slide people.)

See you all next week and don't forget to sign up for the new cross nation team compition Geeks Who Drink is holding called Rumble in the Pub. Here is a link.

This time around I am going to use the power of song and film to explain how amazing last nights quiz went. This is not because I am lazy. It is because so many of you seem to have never heard of things that to me are pretty obvious. I mean how can you forget such classic moments in film history like Vin Diesel in Saving Private Ryan. It was his best role outside of The Babysitter.

Round 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le9uGkbtxHk

Of course with round two it is hard to pick just one of the many songs we played; however, the was one song that had me tapping my feet and begging to hear the full version and that is the wonderful song Dream Lover. So if you are like me and just have to hear the rest. You are welcome.

Round 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVHAQX5sSaU

It was in the third part of the quiz we saw the horror for some known as the 50/50 rounds. Many seemed to be taking some wild stabs and got an average of 4.3 points. One team walked away with a perfect so congrats to More Reverse Cowgirl. For this round I have called on the great words of science to explain our love.

Round 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMsW2oXors8

In the fourth round we talked all things Panama. It was historical, interesting, and above all a unique round with grammar and geography mixed in. In case it wasn't obvious before I really like history and geography rounds. They make me smile inside and out. Also for the people who haven't ever heard the song Panama by Van Halen you have no reason not to click on the amazing link below.

Round 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-NshzYK9y0

The visual round was all about children actors and their journey to expose themselves professionally. I think overall the idea children actors can be best summed up by the excellent British comedian Sean Lock.

Visual Round: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfFSxyrCnLk

In the round about magic we talked about a lot of people who are basically jerks. I have never liked magicians. I find they tend to be bad people in general. Don't think I mean magic is bad. A good trick is fun to see and if you know a card trick I am happy to see it *NOT AT A PARTY. Keep your magic show for friends and not woman you are trying to bang!* That being said just how we laugh when our friends get hurt wouldn't you find it far more entertaining to see a magic trick fail?

Round 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=kX_Jo2TnYIo&feature=endscreen

If I could I would live my entire life in accordance to Hank Hill. He runs a clean household (On clean burning propane.) and above all he just has a way with words.

Round 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WmIo1eRaaM

Finally we came to the end of the quiz with round 8. Our random knowledge round had plenty of fun questions with it all coming down to Jeopardy in the last question. Still the one that most people seemed to enjoy was the NCIS question so in honor of all the excited answers I got for that I will give you what you want and that is a little bit of NCIS.

Round 8: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik7pLT6LzlE

In the end the kings of the quiz were as followed.

  1. Stinkmeaner
  2. More Reverse Cowgirl
  3. Dr. Spaceman

So there you have it ladies and gentleman. A complete rap up of the quiz with the help of YouTube. Of course as anyone who was there will tell you this is only a fraction of the fun that was had if you were to attend the actual quiz. So I expect everyone to be there next week when we once again will take on those eight crazy rounds of beer drinking and brain thumping questions. As promised if you request it I will do it so here is a picture of kittens!

Like many other fantastic GWD quizzes around the nation Blue Star Cafe & Pub witnessed a rather unique round 7 which featured a 2 minute audio clip courtesy of Porn for the Blind. Some of you came up to me after the quiz and seemed to still not believe that this was a real thing so to prove that it is not only real, but still currently being used I wish to share with you the link for the website.

http://pornfortheblind.org/

Those who actually click on the link will find that not only is it still an active site, but that you can record your own description and upload it onto the site. So for the betterment of mankind and for a little bit of good karma I hope that all of my quizzers will take some time out of their day and do what is right and record their own. Bonus points if they mention my name "Quizmaster Colin" at any point during the recording! (Seriously I will buy you more than one beer if you do this people.)

Now that the housekeeping is done we can get onto the rest of the quiz. As you can tell by the picture below Quizmaster Colin was still in high spirits after his Sunday celebration of Cinco De Mayo, Dressed in the traditional culture friendly shirt and armed with a festive drink he plunged into the grand world of quiz with the furry of a white guy doing the Macarena. Of course had he done that for real it is more than likely four or five people would have joined in. So for next week I think we are going to have do that and see if we can get more than just one. I challenge everyone to push themselves beyond just their beer drinking state and enter the wonderful world of drinking and acting silly. I do it every Monday and people come from all around to see me do it!

Great Moments in Quiz History

  • At the end of the first scoring break when Team Black & Yellow were tied with their friends team White is Right.
  • When Quizmaster Colin actually pronounced everything correctly. I mean seriously that almost never happens and it even had those crazy Boston bomber jerks names. It must be because he listens to NPR like a nerd,
  • The team who answered Deep Dish Stuffed Crust for the question what kind of crust was featured on the Porn site banner.
  • The night ended in a wonderful Shake Weight Tiebreaker! *Who doesn't love them?*
  • No less than two teams involved something bad being done to kids. Seriously what the heck was up with that?
  • New and old teams alike had so much fun they decided to hang out outside and look like the lest threatening street gang in the world.
  • When people were happy that we turned off Madonna, but were said when I turned off N'sync.
  • We finally proved once and forall that it is best for the world and greater public that we all join together on Monday night and are away from small children for two hours.

Great Team Names

  • On a scale from Casey Anthony to Jerry Sandusky, How much do you love your kids?
  • Step Dads: Because you hate us and we beat you
  • Team Black & Yellow (If you don't get it you weren't at quiz)
  • White is Right (Again if you don't get it you weren't at quiz)
