"UNDER the Bridge!"

As I write this blog, I’m still conflicted about the tragedy that befell many members of the neighborhood in which my quiz takes place.  On one hand, many members of the community were directly affected by the shooting that happened early Friday morning, their friends and family more appreciative than ever for who they still have left in their lives, and their struggle to remain courageous in the face of such random horror, were palpable.  On the other hand, the word keeps spinning whether we want it to or not.  In times of crisis, familiar routine can be a comforting reminder that, no matter how bleak the external world may seem, every day we can get up, brush our teeth, go to work, and come home to the same house with the same people in it is all the evidence we need that we’re still living this life, making change, influencing those around us, and more grateful for each breath than we were before.  More proof that if we’re not hurting, we’re healing.

Part of that routine, for some, is Saturday night pub quiz at the Royal Hilltop.  9 teams competed against each other for the coveted Zip-it Bananagrams puzzle game, free beer, bar tab, and the fame and glory of a Saturday night victory.

As the night came closer and closer to a conclusion, more of the cloud seemed to lift off of the venue (and myself), and I found myself smiling at the same old “your mom” answers and witty retorts from my group of quizlings, signaling that I was at least starting to feel better, and hoping that my good mood could be transferred to those around me.

I found it fitting that we had a birthday celebration in the building.  Team 36th B-Day was out to have a laugh, drink some craft brew, and celebrate 36 years of life at the local pub quiz, and I couldn’t have been more eager to lead a sing-a-long of “Happy Birthday” to Dee from that team.  Though, in true quizling fashion, some of the teams changed his name to “Dee’s nuts” in the song.

As the night came to a finish, the quiz ended the only way it could have:  With Just the tip brutally trouncing the competition, Jesus skipped AA in second (and the winners of the internet bonus question), and Titty sprinkles in third.

Thanks to everyone who came out, now I’m going to curl up with a good Batman comic, tell my girlfriend that I love her, and listen to some metal music.  See you all next week!
