Marissa (Safari Mari)

I was born & raised in San Diego, California, I left for a few years to attend and graduate from the University of Arizona. Bear down! I spend my days teaching Tucson's youth--the future of America (get out while you can--seriously.) In my spare time, I enjoy geeking out at quiz or hanging with friends!

I love animals, science, books....and quizzing! There's more to know...but really, who cares?

Keep Calm & Geek On!

Why was there so much Billy Bob Thornton in our quiz?

Don’t ask me. Perhaps our writing gnomes at Geeks just had a Billy Bob movie marathon. Or has an old man fetish.  In any case, yes there were a few repeat questions about Mr. Thornton. Also about Weezer. I found this to be the most amusing, since I have been fairly sick as of late and am still having coughing fits and losing my voice. It makes for fun when I am wheezing out to Weezer. I should make a series of inhaler stickers. They are like bumper stickers--but for inhalers. *cough* To the pain! Oh, no I mean, to the quiz:

  • Round 1 discussed stepdads. Those of us with daddy issues immediately called our therapists to set up appointments. Especially since Father’s Day is almost upon us. If only my dad was as cool as Captain Ron.
  • Round 2’s audio clues lead us to a few musicals but some good older rock songs. Heck yeah we played War Pigs.
  • State’s made up our sooner or later round 3-- I had no idea that Flo Rida was from Florida. I thought he was from North Dakota.
  • We know you are but what am I: good times making fun of Fred Phelps and Stalin, for round 4, I can’t help but think: who’s the bigger dick? Probably Dirk Diggler.
  • Special Ed lovers enjoyed delving back into their memory banks to see if they could remember Hollywood and it’s enjoyment of “special” people. Arnie and I am Sam would have gotten along very well.
  • We held a royal court during round 7. Simba showed up to determine he’s going to be a mighty king. Wesley struck fear in the heart of Humperdinck and Dumbldore nearly died. How tragic.
  • I made a Guild reference during round 8 that no one understood.  Perhaps they are not as in love with Felicia Day as I am. I’ll stick with naming animal moves in Kung Fu Panda instead. And personally, the Shire should be the largest city in New Zealand, according to maps of Middle Earth.

Congratulations go out to Erika, who won a wedding slinger . Team Ain’t No Party Like an Ewok Party cuz an Ewok Party is YUBNUB EE CHOO YUBNUB, who won 1st place. And hold the mustard for Save a White Girl Give Cheeseburgers for Life took home 2nd place!

See you all next week!

Julio (Jean-Luc)

If there is one thing you must know about Jean-Luc (or "Julio" for those of you feeling saucy) it is that he loves scotch sours. Doesn't matter what kind of scotch goes into the sour, be it well scotch, Glenlivet, or Laphroaig. Because when he drinks it neat, he only drinks Talisker 18 year. Why is he telling you this? So you can buy him a scotch sour. He has no shame. But know this. Your buying him a scotch won't get you any free points for the night. But it will help him remember your name the following morning.

Originally a native from Los Angeles (Go Dodgers!), Jean-Luc has been living in Tucson close to four years. Love, not a desire to drive down property values, brought him here. And when he's not complaining about the heat, he's complaining about the cold. But he doesn't complain often, except when Ned Colletti makes a horrible trade or a questionable signing. Yes, he enjoys baseball. But he loathes the San Francisco Giants. More than he does gin and tonics.

This is the part of the bio where he lists favorites - favorite films, favorite musical artists, favorite books. After you gloss over the list, somehow you are supposed to know more about him than you did before. Though he doubts that. If you really want to get to know your quizmaster, just approach him. Talk to him. He's the one behind the microphone, mispronouncing words and making awful jokes that fall flat. He doesn't bite. Unless you want him to.

As promised, his favorites (which constantly change)!

Books:

  • Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
  • The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  • The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein
  • 20 Poemas de Amor y Una Cancion Desesperada by Pablo Neruda
  • San Manuel Bueno, martir by Miguel de Unamuno

Music Artists:

  • Wire
  • The Ex
  • Tito Puente
  • Parliament/Funkadelic
  • Fugazi

Films:

  • Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  • Viridiana
  • Bicycle Thieves
  • Die Hard

Ages ago, I quizmastered at Bumsted's. Opportunities on the radio landscape led to my departure, but I knew everyone was in good hands with Safari Mari taking over. I never considered the possibility of returning, not even for a "one night only" affair; it's not that I didn't want to come back, but rather the fact that I like to rest and nap before my radio show. But a sub was needed, and as the only one in town, I happily stepped foot back inside Bumsted's.

Doing so evoked feeling similar to when one returns to the hometowm of his or her youth after establishing a life elsewhere. You walk through the doors and notice familiar, friendly faces. That bottle of Laphroaig still sits on the shelf, now accompanied by a bottle of Glenlivet. Quizzers from long ago excitedly greet you. Newer ones try to make sense of who you are. The food is still delicious and the Guinness is still pouring. It all seemed so familiar. It was almost like I never left. It was a welcome familiarity among all of life's comings and goings. Hell, even my veterinarian was there!

Safari Mari will return next week, and my being there will be just a moment, one of many moments that make life. Memories and moments. Because when the physical is gone, that's all we are left with. That's all life is. Memories and moments.

…instead, I just yell at the drunk people to STFU and pipe down. But given that my regulars applauded me, I will take that as my QM super move. Which leads me to my tangent-- Injustice is a kick-ass game. So much better than what most would think of a fighting game. But SO GOOD. Go play it. And as lame as he is (yeah, yeah) Aquaman does have a pretty awesome supermove.  And it involves a Great White Shark. Not even Green Arrow (my other fave) could beat that. Now I will try to focus…

Round Recap:

  1. From Anus to Zebus: we had Jesus and Cletus followed by fetus. And when I say “two-syllable word that ends in -us” “Aquarius or Sagittarius” are NOT the answers.
  2. My quizzers know I love (and they love) my mash-ups. The audio round tonight was 2 unmashed songs they needed to name the titles of. Apparently, our Hips Don’t Lie about our Mysterious Ways.
  3. Round 3 asked teams to name 8 of the 9 other members of the original JLA members when it debuted in 1960, not including Aquaman. Many of my quizzers should have their Geek Cards taken away. Since when are the Avengers part of the Justice League of America? Since never because JLA is from the DC universe and Avengers are Marvel. Disappointing. And so close to Mother’s Day, too. Tsk.
  4. Freak Freaks took over round 4. Serious, it was a freak show. Korn was a well-known answer, as was Khaaaaaaaaaan (Ricardo Montalban). But how can you forget Frank Zappa?
  5. Round 5 was a hard one. It was like a mental octathalon. But apparently people read the directions ok and did fairly well. Most of them even remembered the order of operations. As a teacher, I was amused. However, I did not excuse your dear aunt Sally. She’s a cunt.
  6. Jocks and the nerds faced off during round 6 with our round on sports video games. I wish we could have had a Punch Out! real-life  tie-breaker. I’ll keep it in mind. And frankly fuck EA and their bullshit. Oh and since when was “Cyberball” based off fooseball?
  7. We went Down Under for the audio round 7. I played a clip and asked a question about some Australian stuff. The Didgeridoo was the easiest (even more so than Taz) but apparently, Cane Toads were hard to pick out. And both Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe have a very distinctive voices…we were looking for the deliciousness of Mr. Eric Bana.
  8. By the random knowledge round we has drunk people causing a noisy ruckus and had other teams shooting them death stares. I might have seen a few teams do some Vadering. I like. But, in the end, teams did pretty well and even knew that the new Fast & the Furious Movie is number 6 in the franchise! Good on ya, mates.

In the end, we had team Drink Apple Juice Because OJ Will Kill You win it first and left Hot & Sauced picking up the second place win. Anthony won himself some interesting hand sanitizer and both Logan  & Jake won some free goodies for stalking our Facebook page! I also said a big congrats to every quizzer who they themselves or knew someone else who was graduating today from our local University. I always like to be one with the community. Bear Down! Until next time, make sure you brush up on your geekiness and have a great Mother’s Day weekend. Or don’t. Whatever you want. Just remember to clean your room. See you next week!
