My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize. He would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical: summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds...pretty standard, really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum; it's breathtaking. I suggest you try it.

First, business: next week is my very last quiz at the Bulldog before moving away, so if you want one last chance to come say hey and play some quiz before your next QM takes over, you know the when and where. Hope to see you there!

As for last night’s quiz, it had something a little different going on for it: three rounds with linked themes. Round 1 was on appetizers, Round 4 was on entrees (not dishes, but debuts), and Round 6 was on deserts. No, I didn’t spell that wrong; we like to keep you on your toes. Looking at the averages for these rounds, I say we erred on the side of caution. I’d like to see those later rounds get a little harder. All in all, though, it was a solid quiz, and you guys did well on it.

I was especially surprised to see how well the majority of you guys did on our Rick Moranis visual round. Remember him? I was going to make a joke about how he dropped off the face of the Earth, but someone told me last night that he stopped acting after his wife died. Not much funny about the untimely demise of one’s spouse. It’s going to totally suck for my wife when it happens to her (me dying, not her).

I suppose the round was relatively easy, but what really amazed me was that most of you were able to identify Little Giants and Big Bully. These aren’t exactly burning up the DVD sales charts. I’d completely forgotten they existed. So kudos on that.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many of you recognized My Blue Heaven. We even had a team named for it tonight: Arugula; it’s a veg-e-table. Not sure why, but I consider this movie to be relatively obscure (for a Steve Martin movie, anyway). I don’t remember it coming out in theaters, and the only reason I know of it is because my family taped it (with a VCR!) off of HBO or something when I was young. No one ever seems to talk about it or reference it.

I can’t say it’s a hugely hilarious movie, but it does amuse me. And between Martin, Moranis, and Joan Cusack, the cast is pretty solid. And it turns out it was written by Nora Ephron! I had no idea. Regardless, this story basically picks up where Goodfellas left off, which is ironic, since it came out a month or two before Goodfellas. Martin plays the mobster-turned-stool pigeon hiding out in Blandsville*, USA (*not the real name of the town), and wacky hijinks ensues. Moranis the FBI agent tries to keep a leash on him and does a poor job of it, as we can see by their constant run-ins with Cusack’s district attorney. They all play it a little over the top, but I dig that, and I dig the movie. Good to see I’m not the only one.
