I'm super excited to be Quizmistress at Lumpy's Downtown on Thursday evenings. Other than trying to fry brains during pub quiz I spend my life snowboarding. Not too shabby, eh? I just moved back to the gorgeous mountains of Utah from the douchebaggery of DC. Glad to be back (I'm from here originally).

Come hang out at Lumpy's Downtown on Thursday for more exciting tidbits on the life of Sarah 'Jo' Newhall. That's right, 'Jo'. Not my real middle name, but it is a nickname that makes me turn my head when called.

Doo-doo-doooo. That's my official quiz sound effect. If you know it, well then obviously you are singing it over and over in your head right now. If you don't, then you probably should and I'll hate you forever until you do. Which really means everyone should always come to Lumpy's Downtown for GWD, always.

Like I said up top, it was a close game until it wasn't. At one time a meager 7 points separated first and last place. That was after Round 3 where everyone absolutely screwed the pooch in knowing where they should NEVER live. 3 or 4 point max for all teams there. It was a round about where the most tornadoes per square mile occur. Clearly, no one knew about the dangers of Maryland and Mississippi. Apologies to those of you who live in those states. I hear a bathtub is a good place to go or a tornado shelter. But, after our first scoring break there was a bit of a surprise that Crouching Woman, Hidden Cucumber  was in first place even after receiving a zero in Round 1 because they decided to split teams a little late. Nice work, Crouching Woman. They jokered our music round hard because they were my fire, and they wanted it that way. Yes, I just threw in the Backstreet Boy lyric from my favorite audio clip. Don't judge me.

The real kickers came in Round 7 and 8, however. Sione Is A Girl's Name  and Scoring Like Your Mom AKA Fuck The Other Team had been duking it out all night for top position. Scröt Squad who had made a valiant showing early on had dropped low in the race. They also took to putting umlauts over every vowel on every answer. I appreciate it when a team sticks with a theme. It all came down to these two rounds. Luckily, for Round 7 there were several Star Wars fans with decent wookie impressions going on. We had a communal Glaaarrrrrggggggghhhh over the mic whenever I said the name of the round. My Chewbacca sounds are not up to par, thanks for the help everyone! Then our winning team of the evening got a coincidental gimme when Princess Leia calls Han Solo a Nerf Herder in one of the clips. Yep, they chose to be The Nerf Herders that evening. Lucky them! So, clearly they pretty much had that round in the bag.

Then Round 8 rolled in, and almost everyone used that joker for the final race to the top. Questions on Margaret Thatcher, nations inside other nations, and Stephen Colbert either made them or broke them. It seemed like at least one person on each team listens to NPR once a week, though. In the end The Nerf Herders pulled away and won the game by quite a big margin. Geek Shiek (my favorite team name spelling) and Crouching Woman, Hidden Cucumber had good games, but the fire was in the belly of the other teams. Sione Is A Girl's Name overtook their rivals Scoring Like Your  Mom by just 2 points to edge them out of the prize zone. Sione was not happy. And, the Scröt Squad came back to take 2nd place by 1 point over Sione Is A Girl's Name. What a nail biter.

Good day to you all.

Thank the baby pandas it was a bit of a low key night at Lumpy's this evening. GWD is always the highlight of the week, but it was especially so this week. It has been a hellacious couple of days for me, and to see all your shining faces and read all your outrageous answers really made it better! It is possible that the uncontested dance off tiebreaker between Vito Jr.'s Shower Turd and themselves was the highlight. Ours Is The Furry conceded second place to Vito's in order to save themselves from face time up in front. They are a modest bunch, the Furry ones.

It made my heart all warm and fuzzy this evening when every single team got all 8 points on the visual round about wrinkly, toothy, ratty things; More Like Bro-Dentia. And then again my soul soared when only 1 team, I Like My Coffee Like I Like My Women; Black, Bitter, and Preferably Fair Trade, knew that the weirdness that was Round 7 and mixed performances of The National Anthem ended with R. Kelly. I just feel weird about him singing at anytime, anywhere.

Once again the team now known as Love In The Time of Chloroform took the 1st place prize by a big margin. It was no joke when they jokered their Round 2 audio round of songs and artists. They got all 16 point on that sucker. And even though I love nerding out on rounds like our Niels, Boers, and Niels Bohr science round this evening, I think the This Is The Life round was the bestie this evening. All the songs had the word 'life' in the title, and it was like a trip through my own young adult life. With everything from Spice Girls to Ace of Base and Cake we all spent some time jamming along to the 10 sec clips.

Wish I could say a billion more things about how great you all made my evening, but phoning it in is kind of my thing right now. Just so I can get some sleep and possibly not be so delirious.

See you next week! Also, go to our Godfather, Goodfellas, and Sopranos Quiz this Saturday! Take the quiz, leave the cannoli...

It was crazy at Lumpy's Downtown last night. Crazy, I say! I thought it was going to be a quite night because there was an event going on in the upstairs bar that I will not speak of because I think it's stupid. I was delighted to be wrong, however! 12 teams showed up, and several of them had the max number of people. It made for such a great competition that we had 4 teams with tie scores at the end of the evening. 11th, 7th, and 5th, place. We also had to settle 3rd place with a dance off, so technically that was also a tie at one point.

That was just the beginning of the madness! Our Round 5 visual round was nutso! Teams had to memorize the pictures on the round, and then I asked questions about the pictures that they answered from memory. The round was called Drunken Memory. I'm assuming because we are in a bar, and we are more than halfway through the quiz at this point, and the other quizzes where this round was happening were not in Utah. Ha, I made an obligatory Utah liquor laws joke. So, I decided while I was making this quiz that I was going to only play songs about alcohol for this round, but I also forgot that I decided to do that. We got to Round 4 after our first break, and I got lost in my own playlist. Yes, that happened. I had a bunch of sons about gettin' schwasty-faced, and I didn't remember why. Oh boy, it was because I was wasted.

I recovered from my momentary confusion, and we continued on our way. Favorite things from the evening list is coming your way. Favorite team name: How Do You Get Blood Out Of A Clown Suit? Also, I need to mention that one team named themselves An All You Can Fuck Buffet just so I would say that over the speaker. Twice. Favorite wrong answer: on our Knights and Nights round there was a question about the biggest catholic fraternity and service organization. Even though I was playing "Knights Of The Round Table" from Monty Python, the answer was not Knights of the Round Table. It was Knights of Columbus. Favorite dance moves: I mentioned earlier that we had a dance off to determine the 3rd place winner. We had male dancers from both teams, Arrested Development Reference and Drop The Rebel Base. The decision was made by they crowd that they would make their stage debuts to Destiny Child's Bootylicious. Although it was lovely to see these two men dancing all up on each other, in the end George from Drop The Rebel Base had the moves to make the ladies swoon. The crowd had the power had their decision was final.

We had quite a big spread in the other scores for the evening beyond all the ties. Coming in 1st place by 8 points was Ebert's Thyroid Gets 4 Stars According To Michael Bay. Coming in 2nd place another 6 points above our 3rd placers was 99 Problems But A Quiz Ain't One. Then, as mentioned before, Drop The Rebel Base took over 3rd place while Arrested Development Reference dropped to 4th after a rousing dance off.

Thanks for another great evening, kids! You all are fabu!

Sarah
