Quiz Schedule
Sunday's 8:00 at Jonsey's Eat Bar
Drew (indeliblemind)

I like brewing beer, which obviously means I enjoy drinking, but with the amount of science you need to know, it's gekier than you'd expect. When not hosting pub quiz, I like to waste time playing with my two cats, Tildie and Lou.

If you're reading this, you've already missed it. Or maybe you were there, but either way, last night was the grand finale of quizzes at Jonsey's. It's bittersweet to close down a quiz, especially when it's in part because it was just so darn popular. But as they say, all good things come to an end and last night, we went out in style.

It was an epic quiz. One for the record books. Seriously, we rocked quiz, packing in as much awesome as any quiz has to offer. We had hilarious team names. We had clever answers. We had a birthday! It was like attending 10 quizzes in one. Amazing.

First off, we almost finished on time, which if you've ever been to Jonsey's, you know that's a feat for me. We didn't quite do it, but it was close and really it would just be impossible to cram this much awesome into such a short time. And I'll get to why we ran over in a second.

Before that though, I would like to applaud all the teams for really bringing it in terms of team names. I've got a soft spot for a good team name and to have the pleasure of hosting such teams as Decoy Vagina and Five Cent Bro Jobs was like a little going away present just for me. Some were even so kind and clever as to pun their way into the evening's theme, such as Spanx for the Mammories.

It was weird thinking about it being the last quiz. It was strange when I realized I was giving away the last 5 bonus question beers, though players sure made it worthwhile (including the one guy who literally jumped over other people to answer). That said, I was happiest when I got to give Tim one of the last bonus beers, because as it turned out, it was his birthday! It was even more serendipitous when he won the email bonus question and got to take home a Geeks pint glass. So I threw in some other swag including the appropriately named "Last Dinner Mints" and a coveted Pickle Pop. Happy Birthday Tim! I hope you gave that Pickle Pop to someone you hate.

But it didn't stop there. Sure, we had some good rounds. I mean ever one likes bagging on Colin Ferrel or a good Lost joke about flying "The Ultra Low Cost Airline", but round 7 really stood out. It wasn't just that we all love good political rhetoric, nor the awesomeness of people audibly climaxing in the background. It might just have been that teams were awesome enough to play along when I suggested they try and guess the porn movie titles. I read some of my favorites, but for the sake of vulgarity (which we now know means common, but no one cares), here are some of the best:

George W Bush in Pulp Friction OR Cum Rain, Cum Shine
Jimmy Carter in The Wadfather
Lyndon Johnson as BJ Onson in Nude Nurse with Big Guns OR Deep Throat
Dwight Eisenhower as Flesh Gordan in Fuck Squad 5 OR Apollo 13 1/2
Gerald Ford in Pole Prose IV
JFK in That Darn Snatch!
George HW Bush in The Sorest Rump
and last, but most recognizable Bill Clinton in In Her Oval Office

Needless to say, I had a really hard time reading these. I laughed, I cried, I dreamed about being that clever.

However, at Jonsey's, teams aren't just clever, they're SMART and it wouldn't be an epic quiz if we didn't showcase how smart our teams are. Of course, there's no better way to do that than to have high scores that end in a tie for first. Which is precisely what DTF and Let the Meat Cake did. Which put us in sudden death… which ended in a tie… which sent us into a tiebreaker… which if we hadn't agreed to play Price is Right rules, might just have been a tie again. Fortunately, I suck at math, so we did go with Price is Right rules and DTF was just a hair over, leaving Let the Meat Cake our final champions with Decoy Vagina in third.

And that was that. Teams trickled out, we said our goodbyes and speculated about what's next for the Sunday night crew. I continued to drown my sorrows in Mamma's Little Yella Pils. It was a quiz like many others, but better. We geeked, we drank and as the staff cleaned up after us, I hoped that I'd see everyone again sometime.

So who knows, maybe you'll catch me at a quiz nearby. Maybe another bar will fill the Sunday night void. But just because our Sunday night rendezvous at Jonsey's has come to a close doesn't mean it's really over. There's always a chance we'll quiz again. Besides, it's not nice to call Kelly Clarkson fat.

Neilson out!

I like brewing beer, which obviously means I enjoy drinking, but with the amount of science you need to know, it's gekier than you'd expect. When not hosting pub quiz, I like to waste time playing with my two cats, Tildie and Lou.

Let me start off by saying that an entire round on Lite FM-type songs is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Then let me say that I was shocked at how many teams knew the answers. I realize that we've got gift certificates on the line here, but I think even if I knew those answers, I wouldn't admit it. In fact, I might go so far as to accusing someone of being a liar if they claimed I did. Granted, that's just me.

Aside from the torture that is Phil Collins, it was another great night at Jonsey's last night, with many teams, plenty of fries and Mama's Little Yellow Pils making an appearance on draft. So at least there was a good amount of happy hour beer to drown out Rod Stewart.

Things started off smoothly with an interesting new round format. Teams proved to be great at the Celebrity Game and with each answer giving a hint to the next, the round created a virtuous circle that lead to many high scores.

Rounds 2 and 3 were a little tougher, since 2 threatened to make your ears bleed and 3, well, lets just say that UNESCO is not a widely known organization at Jonsey's. But that was fine because as one player yelled out at the beginning of Round 4, some people know a lot about Weed. I'm not sure he was on the right track for the round, but I'm sure he was having a good time.

I think everyone was a little surprised by Round 6, because while everyone did relatively well, some players were not comfortable admitting Eli Manning has a girls name and others isn't believe Evelyn Waugh was a real person. Round 6 also delivered our best Bonus question, as we cycled through the calendar in desperate search of a month that rhymes with "dry".

By the end Vatican Rappers had edged into first, with Hard Pore Corn in second and Sharts and Crafts in third. Well played by all… unless of course you won by guessing John Tesh. There's no excuse for that.

I like brewing beer, which obviously means I enjoy drinking, but with the amount of science you need to know, it's gekier than you'd expect. When not hosting pub quiz, I like to waste time playing with my two cats, Tildie and Lou.

Do you know what has two thumbs and almost didn't get a seat at pub quiz last night? This guy. That's right is was so packed at Jonsey's last night, even I almost didn't get in. Clearly, word has gotten out about the awesome food and I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but the awesome pub quiz too.

It was a packed house of super smart people like I haven't seen in a long time. That's not to say that Jonsey's isn't a hotbed of smart folks, but last night if there was a flat surface to write on, there was someone with a quiz sheet scribbling on it. I knew it was going to be good looking at the crowd, but I really knew it was going to be good once I got a look at the team names. I have a soft spot for a clever team name and last night was a real treat. From Ru-Paul Ryan 2012 to the unwittingly appropriate Neverland Ranch Hands, reading standings was almost a problem as I tried to hold down the giggling at every turn. True, we did find that McKayla is Not Impressed, but I was and I think everyone can agree that, indeed, The Grass is always Greener on Your Mom's Side.

So, clever team names were one indicator and I think the scores speak for themselves, but we also had a bevy of witty answers when the quiz proved too challenging. For example, not one, but two teams answered "smegma" as the stuff that sticks to an orange peel (gross) and while still getting the answers right, a number of teams found ways to cleverly point out that a round on Michael Jackson's skin color is more than a tad racist.

Nonetheless, we got the volume up so that teams playing in the bathroom could still hear the quiz and could good laugh at the visual of moose and beavers playing hockey in Maple syrup as a way to teach kids about Canadian history. So every team was slugging it out over strange kids shows, botch face-lifts and the songs that Mary Poppins fought Voldemort to.

As with any competitive quiz, there were a ton of ties and it was really anyone's game up until the end. But like the Olympics, in pub quiz, you only get something if you're in the top three (and if we're really honest, even then you still gripe about not scoring that top slot). All said and done it was Breakdance Fatality that got to stand on the highest podium, with Do Ya Think I'm Sexist in second and Damm taking the bronze.

So, as the team name Hey can we trade all these gold medals for $1 trillion off our debt pointed out, you win some you lose some. But unlike a bunch of pseudo-gold coins on ribbons in the face of crippling financial deficit, Quiz is always a win-win. Because after all, at pub quiz, win, lose or draw, a bad dive is still funny and you still get to go home drunk.
