Learn Something New: A Brief History of Lipsum Text

Cap'n Brendan

Today’s blog is brought to you by my getting distracted down a rabbit hole at work, where someone asked me a question and I spent 45 minutes reading up on it to provide an unnecessarily thorough answer. Some might argue I wasted that time; instead, I’m writing about what I learned so that you can be educated. And time spent learning is never wasted time!

I can’t remember if I’ve told you about my day job here before, but I basically run the intranet (and a few other communications tools) for a public accounting firm. A lot of my day-to-day bread and butter is helping end users who aren’t very familiar with SharePoint set up new sites, and/or teaching them how to get the most value out of what’s there. As I imagine most web developers would tell you, this results in creating a lot of blank canvases and templates before any actual content is ready. Enter Lorem Ipsum text – the aforementioned rabbit hole and subject of this treatise.

I’ve been seeing Lorem Ipsum all over the place, ever since my early days using Word processing software where it was the filler copy in document templates. Apparently not everyone is familiar with this though, as a colleague I had built a new site for asked me what the Latin on the page was. The basic answer is that dummy text is often needed for a publisher or designer to demonstrate the layout of something before actual content is ready. Using real words distracts the viewer, so random Latin words are inserted – most commonly beginning with the phrase “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” from which the gibberish gets its name.

The in-depth answer is full of (questionably) fascinating factoids. Did you know?

  • Lipsum traces its origins to an unknown 16th Century publisher, who scrambled the words in parts of Cicero’s “The Extremes of Good and Evil” to create the model text.
  • You can search the internet for the phrase “lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” to find a wide range of web sites still under development.
  • Lipsum text enjoyed a resurgence in the 20th Century, when Letraset used it prominently in advertisements for their transfer sheets.
  • The use of Lipsum in the Information Age was cemented by Aldus (later acquired by Adobe) who used it in PageMaker templates.

What really blows me away is the sheer volume of Lipsum generators now out there. Beyond the “default” one at Lipsum.com – a source of many of the facts uncovered in this research – there’s a whole network of fan service sites tracked at www.theipsumcollection.com. These include:

  • Star Wars Ipsum: “Darth hutt kessel solo jar solo mace jango moff.”
  • Game of Thrones Ipsum: “Hodor? Hodor ... Hodor hodor?! Hodor hodor hodor, hodor!”
  • 90’s Ipsum: “Ain’t no thang sitcoms roseanne my heart will go on gak bill gates, ford bronco.”
  • (WHY?) Justin Bieber Ipsum: “We could be fire swaggie smile on your face, even though your heart is frowning.”
  • And yes, it’s already a thing. Trump Ipsum: “You could see there was text coming out of her eyes, text coming out of her wherever. Look at these words. Are they small words?”

These are just a few of the hundreds of variants out there. So now that you know a little more about Lipsum, dig in and find some fancy new placeholder text for your next project!

And with that, let’s move on to the quiz recap.

That Round 2 – OUCH! Being the only team to surpass 10 points on it, and the only team to use their joker on it, newcomers Bernie Sanders Communist Death Squad jumped out to an early lead, but it proved one they couldn’t hold down the stretch as George’s Uncontrollable Body completed the comeback on Round 8, claiming $50 and the top spot. A $20 second-place prize wasn’t a bad consolation prize, though, methinks. At the ass end of the standings, we saw It’s My Saturday grab the $10 next-to-last place gift certificate.

That’s all I have for you this week. Be good, and I’ll see you next Wednesday!
