Pictures and Data Connections Are Stupid

Cap'n Brendan

If you were here a couple of weeks ago, you may have noticed that I suddenly was walking around the bar taking pictures on my smartphone instead of the digital camera I’ve been using since I started here (and close to 5 years before that). That trusty old relic, like the dinosaur that it was, finally met its end recently and had to be put down like Old Yeller. Not that I’ve ever been much of a photographer, or a big fan of carrying more devices around with me, but there was something very simple and easy about plugging it into my laptop via USB and grabbing all the pictures quickly and easily at the end of the night. Go figure, I'm not embracing the future, I'm just resisting change.

Now, I can safely say fuck this stupid cell phone thing. For one thing, the ~20 pictures I take here each night add up to close to 100 MB of data that my phone will gladly “accidentally” disconnect from a slow Wi-Fi connection to upload on my mobile data plan. Sure, I could turn that off before I start, but that’s even more work. They also remain stuck on my phone after I upload them, as opposed to a simple cut-and-paste operation like I used to be able to do. Even when I try plugging this thing in by USB, it makes it as hard as possible to find and move the pictures. Didn’t touch the screen and it locked? Tough titties, Turkleton!

I’m not loving this new world I live in. Sure, I also don’t love the idea of having to go spend money on a new camera either, but time itself is money. And right now I’m wasting an inordinate amount of time trying to get these stupid fucking pictures off my stupid fucking phone. I just want to go back to drinking beer in a simpler time when technology did what I wanted it to, and Verizon wasn’t trying to charge me another $15 this month for my phone’s tendency to bypass Wi-Fi for the more expensive alternative.

Alright, I’m done for now. Pictures are stupid. And this blog is even stupider. Fuck you, that’s a word!

Congratulations to Suck It, Lee, who took home the gold tonight and $50 for first place. Second and $20 fell to Da Beers, while the $10 for next-to-last wound up in the hands of RIP Betty White. We had some great team names tonight, but one I liked that didn’t bring home any other prize was The Penny Whistle Solo From My Heart Will Go On – which might be the only time that Cards Against Humanity card has won anything.

It was a pleasure spending my Wednesday with you – as always. Take care of yourselves, and I’ll see you next week!
