Geeks Who Drink, one of the country's biggest and best series of "pub quiz" nights (they prefer that term over "trivia"), is certainly feeling it... More to the point, the Geek Bowl — its annual Super Bowl of trivia — sold out its 430 tickets in less than three hours in December.

Aaron Retka studied chimpanzees at the San Diego Zoo for his Colorado College thesis in anthropology. Those primates were tame compared to his current species: beer-soaked geeks and drunk hecklers. He’s a pub quizmaster. He’s part Alex Trebek, part Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

“Traditionally, geeks (aka nerds, brainiacs, bookworms or those-kids-who-pull-their-pants-up-way-too-high) have been a shy, anti-social group, choosing to stay at home watching Star Trek marathons on the Sci Fi Channel and inventing online avatars instead of venturing out into the frightening world of wedgies and swirlies.”

The Geek Bowl: On this night at McCabe’s, the opening round involves the unlikely pairing of Adolf Hitler and ’80s movies... (The Gazette, Colorado Springs 2/20/07)
Greg Howard, the owner, was dubious when Dicker and Peach approached him about the idea. "I said 'What — you really think people are going to come down here for that?'" But quiz night has been a boon to business, he says. In recent weeks, he’s had to haul in patio chairs for everyone to have a seat.
The quiz masters: Being a geek is cool again: "It's really different than other trivia nights — a lot of them have easy questions. These are kinda out of left field here". (Boulder Daily Camera, 1/26/07)
In the end, though, it's the constant imagination of the two founding Geeks that keep this quiz night unique and successful.
Trivial Pursuit: Meet the ‘Geeks Who Drink: Becoming a Geek is pretty easy. There’s no fee, no registration and no shame in being able to name all of the Spice Girls’ real names. (Fort Collins Coloradoan, 1/19/07)

This is not a boring trivia game, Dicker insists. The questions are cunning, the teams are smart - and the quest quiz masters are bold-named.
"I think the idea that there are Denver celebrities is kind of amusing," says Dicker.
A Toast to Trivia: Pub patrons take their best shots at matching wits for points, pints (Rocky Mountain News, 06/16/2006)
"The Tuesday-night throng - a beery, tattooed, smoke-stained cavalcade - muttered and milled about Nallen's on Market Street while the bosses laid down rules via loudspeaker. The bout was about to begin, but this would be no free-for-all. If the Marquess of Queensberry had been present, he would have approved - a competition, nay, a combat, of such nature demanded focus and respect"
"This wasn't just some tequila-fueled bar brawl or meatheaded underground fight club. This was important. This was a pub quiz."

Booze Clues
10.12.07
Dan Mayfield, Journal Staff Writer
“Most nights at Burt's Tiki Lounge, it's loud, raucous, the bands rule the stage and the dance floor is packed. But not Mondays. For years, Mondays were the quiet night. Maybe a dozen people would show up to drink and shoot the breeze. But not anymore. Mondays have become one of the busiest nights at the Downtown bar since it started hosting the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz.
Sure, a pub quiz. Right. Like that's any fun. It may sound lame, but Geeks Who Drink specializes in the goofy, the vulgar, the absurd and the funny. Where else would you be asked to "Name That Poo," and be given a sheet with pictures of animals and their poo?
It's become the only night some folks come to bars Downtown and a good place for people to meet friends, or make new ones. It's still quiet, but in a way that's charged with the energy of people competing for fake mustache kits and ironic T-shirts... The Geeks Who Drink quiz will now also be hosted on Wednesday nights at O'Niell's Pub at 9 p.m.
