I am a person who appreciates games. I really like to compete and test my performance against others. I am therefore disappointed in the officiating at the most recent Geekswhodrink contest at Fado (Austin). When informed of a mistake in scoring, the quizmasters were dismissive and indifferent.
If scores are going to be kept, posted and used to award prizes, then accuracy is a valid goal. If people want to play a "Who cares about rules, its just for fun anyway..." game, then they shouldn't bother keeping score. "..Austin's most prestigious quiz" would be more enjoyable if greater concern for scoring accuracy was evident.

Not to get all uppity on you but with the time lapse here between the offense and the comment did you bring it up to the QM at the time or, like, 30 minutes after the quiz?

The concern was brought up to me after prizes had been awarded. Our Quizmaster training book tells us to refer to the third rule o fthe game that is marked on each score packet 'The Quiz is Fixed,' which alludes to the quiz being for fun, and imperfections being a possibility. The team in question would have tied for second. We have offered the team a 2-point start at the beginning of the next game. Our hope is for everyone to have fun, and also be flexible and understanding, especially when there are as many teams in a small and hectic environment like last week. Cheers! See y'all next week.

There are score mistakes at every pub quiz. I've been going to different trivia nights for about three years and every single quizmaster I've ever had has made a scoring mistake at least once.

You should keep track of your answers and double check your score update vs. what the quizmaster has down for you.

The score for the Tony Danza team has been screwed up on numerous occasions, but 9 outta 10 times, if we bring up the problem to Ted or Pat, they'll double check our answers fix the score for the next round.

Keep in mind that Fado is a ridiculously large quiz with 30+ teams at times. Pat and Ted do an excellent job managing everything while keeping spirits high and having fun. The occasional error does occur, and those odds increase with more teams causing more impatience between rounds.

Be vigilant about checking your own score. Obviously, quizmasters don't want or try to make any mistakes, but we are human.

It sucks when mistakes happen, but that's not a frequent problem from what I've observed in the 30 weeks I've been there. Usually, if something happens, QMs can recheck the team's answer sheet and correct. A round 8 problem is especially unfortunate but rare.

I stand by my belief Fado has one of the strongest quizzes in Austin. As far as Geeks Who Drink goes, it may be one of the most competitive locations in the country.
